Nonrelativistic double photoeffect on lithiumlike ions at high energies
The total cross section for double ionization of lithiumlike ions by a
high-energy photon is calculated in leading order of the nonrelativistic
perturbation theory. The partial contributions due to simultaneous and
sequential emissions of two electrons are taken into account. The cross section
under consideration is shown to be related to those for double photoeffect on
the ground and excited 2^{1,3}S states of heliumlike ions. The double-to-single
ionization ratio is equal to R = 0.288/Z^2 for lithiumlike ions with moderate
nuclear charge numbers Z. However, even for the lightest three-electron targets
such as Li and Be^+, analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement
with the numerical calculations performed within the framework of different
rather involved approaches.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures. to be published in Physics Letters
Perspectives on safety culture
Overviewing selected elements from the literature, this paper locates the notion of safety culture within its parent concept of organisational culture. A distinction is drawn between functionalist and interpretive perspectives on organisational culture. The terms ‘culture’ and ‘climate’ are clarified as they are typically applied to organisations and to safety. A contrast is drawn between strategic top down and data-driven bottom up approaches to human factors as an illustrative aspect of safety. A safety case study is used to illustrate two measurement approaches. Key issues for future study include valid measurement of safety culture and developing methods to adequately represent mechanisms through which safety culture might influence, and be influenced by, other safety factors
S-Matrix Unitarity, Impact Parameter Profiles, Gluon Saturation and High-Energy Scattering
A model combining perturbative and non-perturbative QCD is developed to
compute high-energy reactions of hadrons and photons and to investigate
saturation effects that manifest the S-matrix unitarity. Following a functional
integral approach, the S-matrix factorizes into light-cone wave functions and
the universal amplitude for the scattering of two color-dipoles which are
represented by Wegner-Wilson loops. In the framework of the non-perturbative
stochastic vacuum model of QCD supplemented by perturbative gluon exchange, the
loop-loop correlation is calculated and related to lattice QCD investigations.
With a universal energy dependence motivated by the two-pomeron (soft + hard)
picture that respects the unitarity condition in impact parameter space, a
unified description of pp, pip, Kp, gamma* p, and gamma gamma reactions is
achieved in good agreement with experimental data for cross sections, slope
parameters, and structure functions. Impact parameter profiles for pp and
longitudinal gamma* p reactions and the gluon distribution of the proton
xG(x,Q^2,b) are calculated and found to saturate in accordance with S-matrix
unitarity. The c.m. energies and Bjorken x at which saturation sets in are
determined.Comment: 65 pages with 13 figures, Introduction, Sec. 3, and Conclusion

QCD Corrections to QED Vacuum Polarization
We compute QCD corrections to QED calculations for vacuum polarization in
background magnetic fields. Formally, the diagram for virtual loops
is identical to the one for virtual loops. However due to
confinement, or to the growth of as decreases, a direct
calculation of the diagram is not allowed. At large we consider the
virtual diagram, in the intermediate region we discuss the role of
the contribution of quark condensates \left and at the
low-energy limit we consider the , as well as charged pion
loops. Although these effects seem to be out of the measurement accuracy of
photon-photon laboratory experiments they may be relevant for -ray
burst propagation. In particular, for emissions from the center of the galaxy
(8.5 kpc), we show that the mixing between the neutral pseudo-scalar pion
and photons renders a deviation from the power-law spectrum in the
range. As for scalar quark condensates \left and
virtual loops are relevant only for very high radiation density
and very strong magnetic fields of order .Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; Final versio
Measurement of the Ds lifetime
We report precise measurement of the Ds meson lifetime. The data were taken
by the SELEX experiment (E781) spectrometer using 600 GeV/c Sigma-, pi- and p
beams. The measurement has been done using 918 reconstructed Ds. The lifetime
of the Ds is measured to be 472.5 +- 17.2 +- 6.6 fs, using K*(892)0K+- and phi
pi+- decay modes. The lifetime ratio of Ds to D0 is 1.145+-0.049.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures submitted to Phys. Lett.
Confirmation of the Double Charm Baryon Xi_cc+ via its Decay to p D+ K-
We observes a signal for the double charm baryon Xi_cc+ in the charged decay
mode Xi_cc+ -> p D+ K- to complement the previously reported decay Xi_cc+ ->
Lambda_c K- pi+ in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment
(E781) at Fermilab. In this new decay mode we observe an excess of 5.62 events
over an expected background estimated by event mixing to be 1.38+/-0.13 events.
The Poisson probability that a background fluctuation can produce the apparent
signal is less than 6.4E-4. The observed mass of this state is
(3518+/-3)MeV/c^2, consistent with the published result. Averaging the two
results gives a mass of (3518.7+/-1.7)MeV/c^2. The observation of this new weak
decay mode confirms the previous SELEX suggestion that this state is a double
charm baryon. The relative branching ratio Gamma(Xi_cc+ -> pD+K-)/Gamma(Xi_cc+
-> Lambda_c K- pi+) = 0.36+/-0.21.Comment: 11 pages, 6 included eps figures. v2 includes improved statistical

Experimental Study of the Shortest Reset Word of Random Automata
In this paper we describe an approach to finding the shortest reset word of a
finite synchronizing automaton by using a SAT solver. We use this approach to
perform an experimental study of the length of the shortest reset word of a
finite synchronizing automaton. The largest automata we considered had 100
states. The results of the experiments allow us to formulate a hypothesis that
the length of the shortest reset word of a random finite automaton with
states and 2 input letters with high probability is sublinear with respect to
and can be estimated as $1.95 n^{0.55}.
Two-proton correlations from 158 AGeV Pb+Pb central collisions
The two-proton correlation function at midrapidity from Pb+Pb central
collisions at 158 AGeV has been measured by the NA49 experiment. The results
are compared to model predictions from static thermal Gaussian proton source
distributions and transport models RQMD and VENUS. An effective proton source
size is determined by minimizing CHI-square/ndf between the correlation
functions of the data and those calculated for the Gaussian sources, yielding
3.85 +-0.15(stat.) +0.60-0.25(syst.) fm. Both the RQMD and the VENUS model are
consistent with the data within the error in the correlation peak region.Comment: RevTeX style, 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. More discussion are added
about the structure on the tail of the correlation function. The systematic
error is revised. To appear in Phys. Lett.
Event-by-event fluctuations of average transverse momentum in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon
We present first data on event-by-event fluctuations in the average
transverse momentum of charged particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at the
CERN SPS. This measurement provides previously unavailable information allowing
sensitive tests of microscopic and thermodynamic collision models and to search
for fluctuations expected to occur in the vicinity of the predicted QCD phase
transition. We find that the observed variance of the event-by-event average
transverse momentum is consistent with independent particle production modified
by the known two-particle correlations due to quantum statistics and final
state interactions and folded with the resolution of the NA49 apparatus. For
two specific models of non-statistical fluctuations in transverse momentum
limits are derived in terms of fluctuation amplitude. We show that a
significant part of the parameter space for a model of isospin fluctuations
predicted as a consequence of chiral symmetry restoration in a non-equilibrium
scenario is excluded by our measurement.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
