    Easier than you Think – Curbside Consult on the How-To of an Energy Audit and USDA Application

    In 2016, K-State Engineering Extension entered into a partnership with the Kansas Corporation Commission to provide energy assessments to Kansas small businesses at no cost. Subsequent to the energy assessment, Engineering Extension works with the business to submit a USDA Rural Energy for America Program grant to implement energy efficiency or renewable energy projects and reduce operating costs. Facilities approved for the grant can receive a reimbursement of up to 25% of the project’s eligible costs. This session provides information on these projects and will inform attendees how to request assistance from Engineering Extension. Through this program, Engineering Extension has assisted 16 rural grocery stores with a free energy assessment; five of these submitted REAP grants. Four have received grant approval and one is still pending. The four applications that have been approved encompass eight projects for a cost of 173,000;USDAwillreimburse173,000; USDA will reimburse 43,300. The annual energy savings for the eight projects amount to 279,000 kWh and $35,200. The USDA funding reduced the simple payback for these projects from 4.9 years to 3.7 years. The Engineering Extension program not only meets the conference theme of sustainability through reduced consumption of natural resources required for energy generation, it also aids rural grocery stores in providing rural healthy food access. In addition to partnering with KCC and USDA, Engineering Extension has partnered with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Kansas in its Pathways to a Healthy Kansas program.     The employment relationship – that between employer and employee – is at the heart of capitalism and a core issue for public policy. Governments create rules, policies and institutions within which employees, their representatives, employers and their representatives, operate. The interest to governments when creating policy includes the form that bargaining takes, wage and employment levels, the nature and effects of contracting and the rights of workers – much of this boiling down to issues of power. In recent decades, major policy issues have included the federal Labor government’s Prices and Incomes Accords in the 1980s and 1990s, the Coalition government’s ‘WorkChoices’ legislation, the shift to enterprise bargaining, and developments in such areas as minimum wages and pay equity. In this chapter we outline the matters at stake, the players, the policy processes and some of the key issues

    In Escherichia coli, the biogenesis of both cytochrome bd-type quinol oxidases and periplasmic cytochromes requires the ATP-binding cassette-type cysteine/GSH transporter, CydDC. Recombinant CydDC was purified as a heterodimer and found to be an active ATPase both in soluble form with detergent and when reconstituted into a lipid environment. Two-dimensional crystals of CydDC were analyzed by electron cryomicroscopy, and the protein was shown to be made up of two non-identical domains corresponding to the putative CydD and CydC subunits, with dimensions characteristic of other ATP-binding cassette transporters. CydDC binds heme b. Detergent-solubilized CydDC appears to adopt at least two structural states, each associated with a characteristic level of bound heme. The purified protein in detergent showed a weak basal ATPase activity (approximately 100 nmol Pi/min/mg) that was stimulated ∼3-fold by various thiol compounds, suggesting that CydDC could act as a thiol transporter. The presence of heme (either intrinsic or added in the form of hemin) led to a further enhancement of thiol-stimulated ATPase activity, although a large excess of heme inhibited activity. Similar responses of the ATPase activity were observed with CydDC reconstituted into E. coli lipids. These results suggest that heme may have a regulatory role in CydDC-mediated transmembrane thiol transport

    Electronic adherence monitoring identifies severe preschool wheezers who are steroid responsive.

    Little is known about adherence to inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in preschool children with troublesome wheeze. Children with aeroallergen senitization, or those reporting multiple trigger wheeze (MTW), are more likely to respond to ICS. We hypothesized that adherence to ICS and symptom control are only positively related in atopic children, or those reporting MTW. Patients aged 1 to 5 years with recurrent wheeze prescribed ICS were recruited from a tertiary respiratory clinic. Clinical phenotype and aeroallergen senitization were determined, and adherence assessed using an electronic monitoring device (Smartinhaler). Symptom control (test for respiratory and asthma control in kids [TRACK]), quality of life (PACQLQ), airway inflammation (offline exhaled nitric oxide) were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Forty-eight children (mean age 3.7 years; SD, 1.2) were monitored for a median of 112 (interquartile range [IQR], 91-126) days. At baseline n = 29 reported episodic viral wheeze and n = 19 reported MTW. Twenty-four out of 48 (50%) wheezers had suboptimal ICS adherence (<80%). Median adherence was 64% (IQR, 38-84). There was a significant increase in TRACK and PACQLQ in the group as a whole, unrelated to adherence. In subgroup analysis only atopic wheezers with moderate or good adherence ≥ 60% had a significant increase in TRACK. There was no relationship between clinical phenotype, and adherence or TRACK. In this pilot study, overall adherence to ICS was suboptimal and was positively related to symptom control in atopic wheezers only. Assessments of adherence are important in preschool troublesome wheezers before therapy escalation to help identify those with an ICS responsive phenotype
