CSI Neural Network: Using Side-channels to Recover Your Artificial Neural Network Information

    Get PDF
Machine learning has become mainstream across industries. Numerous examples proved the validity of it for security applications. In this work, we investigate how to reverse engineer a neural network by using only power side-channel information. To this end, we consider a multilayer perceptron as the machine learning architecture of choice and assume a non-invasive and eavesdropping attacker capable of measuring only passive side-channel leakages like power consumption, electromagnetic radiation, and reaction time. We conduct all experiments on real data and common neural net architectures in order to properly assess the applicability and extendability of those attacks. Practical results are shown on an ARM CORTEX-M3 microcontroller. Our experiments show that the side-channel attacker is capable of obtaining the following information: the activation functions used in the architecture, the number of layers and neurons in the layers, the number of output classes, and weights in the neural network. Thus, the attacker can effectively reverse engineer the network using side-channel information. Next, we show that once the attacker has the knowledge about the neural network architecture, he/she could also recover the inputs to the network with only a single-shot measurement. Finally, we discuss several mitigations one could use to thwart such attacks.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure

The Technology Acceptance Model of Online Game in Indonesian Adolescents

Online games have become a mainstream source of entertainment in the world, including Indonesia. The present study uses an adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to help us understand how online game is accepted in Indonesia. The participants were school students (N = 1 498) from Year 7 to Year 12 recruited from several schools in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. A modified version of the original measures of the TAM was used to assess perceived ease of use and usefulness of online game. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to investigate the construct validity of each measure and path analysis with structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses. The results confirmed the relevance of previous established constructs, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention in an online game setting in Indonesia, as well as the hypothesized relationships among these constructs according to TAM. Furthermore, the good model fit suggests that TAM is a valid and relevant research model to understand online game USAge among Indonesian school students. Although further studies are necessary, the results support the notion that online games in the setting of Indonesian school students is just like any other technology in adult and business settings

Syntactic Frequency and Sentence Processing in Standard Indonesian:Data from agrammatic aphasia and ERP

    Get PDF
Aphasia is a language impairment caused by focal brain damage affecting multiple channels of language. Studies have shown that one third of stroke patients show some form of aphasia. One of the key characteristics of aphasia is that in most types, patients show deficits in sentence processing. This is so much so that many aphasia assessment tools utilize sentence comprehension or production tasks to determine aphasia type or severity, or perhaps to provide a more detailed profile on the symptoms. Individuals with aphasia have been known to face difficulties in processing sentences with a derived or non-canonical structure, like the passive. While numerous studies have discussed the morphosyntactic basis of this deficit, other aspects of sentence processing such as frequency of the sentence structures are often neglected. There is considerable possibility of syntactic frequency affecting sentence processing, as a large body of research has shown the impact of word-level frequency towards language processing. Could the impairment of processing non-canonical sentences be related to the low frequency of these sentences? This thesis examines sentence processing in Standard Indonesian, a language where the passive occurs at a rate that is comparable to active sentences. Individuals with aphasia and controls were tested with sentence comprehension and production tasks, and an event-related potential study of sentence processing for healthy adults were conducted. We found the passive to be unimpaired for aphasic individuals, and we also did not find any observable processing differences between the active and the passive in the neuroimaging experiment

Palliative Care SBAR - A story of forbidden love between SBAR and TWTW with some GRRRR throw in as well

    Get PDF
This presentation relates the tale of forbidden love that developed between the Situation - Background - Assessment - Recommendation (SBAR) tool and Te Whare Tapa Wha (TWTW) a New Zealand Maori model of health and wellness that has led to the creation of their love-child - the Palliative Care SBAR.Clinical situations can be thought of as stories that need to be shared between healthcare practitioners at relevant times. Communication of such stories can be difficult if the participants do not have appropriate tools available. The SBAR was originally developed by the United States Navy as a communication tool, but is now widely used in healthcare settings for clinical "hand-off"/hand-overs. TWTW is a New Zealand Maori model of health and wellness first developed by Maori health expert Professor Sir Mason Durie in 1982, and has become widely used by New Zealand Palliative Care teams as it provides a framework for holistic, whole person care provision. The Greet, Respectfully listen, Review, Recommend, Reward (GRRRR) listening model provides a formula for listeners to follow. Intrigued yet? Come along to the presentation to see how a budding raconteur, James Jap, cobbles these disparate story elements together. It will be a bit different. You have been warned

Taktik Self Presentation Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (Sby) Melalui Akun Twitter (@Sbyudhoyono)

Factors Predicting Reading in Indonesian Adolescents

    Get PDF
The current study investigates predictors of reading abilities of adolescents in Standard Indonesian (SI). Reading predictors typically signify, with some degree of error, essential cognitive skills needed for individuals to read effectively. This is crucial since it forms a key part of the initial steps to assess or identify reading-related language impairments such as dyslexia. In addition to measures of reading itself and nonverbal intelligence, the present research examines six empirically motivated potential predictors of reading and decoding: phonological awareness; phonological short-term memory; verbal and semantic fluency; rapid automated naming (RAN); motor control; familial risk; and, self-reported factors. The results show that RAN is a dominant predictor among the other factors that were considered in adolescent SI speakers. The results also show strong support for the notion that the importance of RAN increases as children age. Moreover, it is consistent with previous studies that have argued that RAN is a vital predictor of reading development in transparent orthographies
