The Myth of Narcissus and the Narcissistic Structure.
Since Freud\u27s article On Narcissism, behavioral psychologists have predominantly viewed this phenomenon as a personality disorder. This dissertation, in contrast, provides a psychoanalytic, i.e., Lacanian reading of the myth of Narcissus as it is recorded in classical literature, and brings about an understanding of the myth\u27s underlying structure. The four fundamental exigencies of the myth\u27s structure include the incest prohibition which symbolically castrates the human subject, the incestuous desire as a result of this prohibition, the displacement of this desire for another imaginary object, and the obsessive quest of that image as the symptom. This structure--defined as narcissistic structure and encountered in the behavior of human beings--manifests itself in all kinds of literary texts from various national literatures, genres, and epochs as a literary theme, the Narcissus theme. Yet this narcissistic configuration prevails as a structural fact beyond the study of specific influence of the Narcissus myth. An examination of texts in which the myth of Narcissus is neither an explicit nor an implicit theme also often reveals the structure of this myth. In conclusion, I suggest that an understanding of the frustrating mechanisms of the narcissistic structure may allow us to escape the violent and suicidal aspects of this configuration

Capacity Degradation of Zero-Excess All-Solid-State Li Metal Batteries Using a Poly(ethylene oxide) Based Solid Electrolyte
Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs), such as poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), have good flexibility when compared to ceramic-type solid electrolytes. Therefore, it could be an ideal solid electrolyte for zero-excess all-solid-state Li metal battery (ZESSLB), also known as anode-free all-solid-state Li battery, development by offering better contact to the Cu current collector. However, the low Coulombic efficiencies observed from polymer type solid-state Li batteries (SSLBs) raise the concern that PEO may consume the limited amount of Li in ZESSLB to fail the system. Here, we designed ZESSLBs by using all-ceramic half-cells and an extra PEO electrolyte interlayer to study the reactivity between PEO and freshly deposited Li under a real battery operating conduction. By shuttling active Li back from the anode to the cathode, the PEO SPEs can be separated from the ZESSLBs for experimental studies without the influence from cathode materials or possible contamination from the usage of Li foil as the anode. Electrochemical cycling of ZESSLBs shows that the capacities of ZESSLBs with solvent-free and solvent-casted PEO SPEs significantly degraded compared to the ones with Li metal as the anode for the all-solid-state Li batteries. The fast capacity degradation of ZESSLBs using different types of PEO SPEs is evidenced to be associated with Li reacting with PEO, residual solvent, and water in PEO and dead Li formation upon the presence or absence of residual solvent. The results suggest that avoiding direct contact between the PEO electrolyte and deposited lithium is necessary when there is only a limited amount of Li available in ZESSLBs
Hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention in boys with cleft lip and palate: relationship to ventromedial prefrontal cortex morphology
The purpose of this study is to evaluate quantitative structural measures of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in boys with isolated clefts of the lip and/or palate (ICLP) relative to a comparison group and to associate measures of brain structure with quantitative measures of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness. A total of 50 boys with ICLP were compared to 60 healthy boys without clefts. Magnetic resonance imaging brain scans were used to evaluate vmPFC structure. Parents and teachers provided quantitative measures of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness using the Pediatric Behavior Scale. Boys with ICLP had significantly higher ratings of hyperactivity/impulsivity/inattention (HII) and significantly increased volume of the right vmPFC relative to the comparison group. There was a direct relationship between HII score and vmPFC volume in both the ICLP group and control group, but the relationship was in the opposite direction: in ICLP, the higher the vmPFC volume, the higher the HII score; for the comparison group, the lower the vmPFC volume, the greater the HII score. The vmPFC is a region of the brain that governs behaviors of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention (HII). In boys with ICLP, there are higher levels of HII compared to the controls and this is directly related to a significantly enlarged volume of the right vmPFC. Enlargement of this region of the brain is therefore considered to be pathological in the ICLP group and supports the notion that abnormal brain structure (from abnormal brain development) is the underlying etiology for the abnormal behaviors seen in this population
Maternal TLR signaling is required for prenatal asthma protection by the nonpathogenic microbe Acinetobacter lwoffii F78
The pre- and postnatal environment may represent a window of opportunity for allergy and asthma prevention, and the hygiene hypothesis implies that microbial agents may play an important role in this regard. Using the cowshed-derived bacterium Acinetobacter lwoffii F78 together with a mouse model of experimental allergic airway inflammation, this study investigated the hygiene hypothesis, maternal (prenatal) microbial exposure, and the involvement of Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling in prenatal protection from asthma. Maternal intranasal exposure to A. lwoffii F78 protected against the development of experimental asthma in the progeny. Maternally, A. lwoffii F78 exposure resulted in a transient increase in lung and serum proinflammatory cytokine production and up-regulation of lung TLR messenger RNA. Conversely, suppression of TLRs was observed in placental tissue. To investigate further, the functional relevance of maternal TLR signaling was tested in TLR2/3/4/7/9â/â knockout mice. The asthma-preventive effect was completely abolished in heterozygous offspring from A. lwoffii F78âtreated TLR2/3/4/7/9â/â homozygous mother mice. Furthermore, the mild local and systemic inflammatory response was also absent in these A. lwoffii F78âexposed mothers. These data establish a direct relationship between maternal bacterial exposures, functional maternal TLR signaling, and asthma protection in the progeny
Detailed spectral and morphological analysis of the shell type SNR RCW 86
Aims: We aim for an understanding of the morphological and spectral
properties of the supernova remnant RCW~86 and for insights into the production
mechanism leading to the RCW~86 very high-energy gamma-ray emission. Methods:
We analyzed High Energy Spectroscopic System data that had increased
sensitivity compared to the observations presented in the RCW~86 H.E.S.S.
discovery publication. Studies of the morphological correlation between the
0.5-1~keV X-ray band, the 2-5~keV X-ray band, radio, and gamma-ray emissions
have been performed as well as broadband modeling of the spectral energy
distribution with two different emission models. Results:We present the first
conclusive evidence that the TeV gamma-ray emission region is shell-like based
on our morphological studies. The comparison with 2-5~keV X-ray data reveals a
correlation with the 0.4-50~TeV gamma-ray emission.The spectrum of RCW~86 is
best described by a power law with an exponential cutoff at TeV and a spectral index of ~. A static
leptonic one-zone model adequately describes the measured spectral energy
distribution of RCW~86, with the resultant total kinetic energy of the
electrons above 1 GeV being equivalent to 0.1\% of the initial kinetic
energy of a Type I a supernova explosion. When using a hadronic model, a
magnetic field of ~100G is needed to represent the measured data.
Although this is comparable to formerly published estimates, a standard
E spectrum for the proton distribution cannot describe the gamma-ray
data. Instead, a spectral index of ~1.7 would be required, which
implies that ~erg has been transferred into
high-energy protons with the effective density cm^-3. This
is about 10\% of the kinetic energy of a typical Type Ia supernova under the
assumption of a density of 1~cm^-3.Comment: accepted for publication by A&
Characterizing the gamma-ray long-term variability of PKS 2155-304 with H.E.S.S. and Fermi-LAT
Studying the temporal variability of BL Lac objects at the highest energies
provides unique insights into the extreme physical processes occurring in
relativistic jets and in the vicinity of super-massive black holes. To this
end, the long-term variability of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 is analyzed in
the high (HE, 100 MeV 200 GeV)
gamma-ray domain. Over the course of ~9 yr of H.E.S.S observations the VHE
light curve in the quiescent state is consistent with a log-normal behavior.
The VHE variability in this state is well described by flicker noise
(power-spectral-density index {\ss}_VHE = 1.10 +0.10 -0.13) on time scales
larger than one day. An analysis of 5.5 yr of HE Fermi LAT data gives
consistent results ({\ss}_HE = 1.20 +0.21 -0.23, on time scales larger than 10
days) compatible with the VHE findings. The HE and VHE power spectral densities
show a scale invariance across the probed time ranges. A direct linear
correlation between the VHE and HE fluxes could neither be excluded nor firmly
established. These long-term-variability properties are discussed and compared
to the red noise behavior ({\ss} ~ 2) seen on shorter time scales during
VHE-flaring states. The difference in power spectral noise behavior at VHE
energies during quiescent and flaring states provides evidence that these
states are influenced by different physical processes, while the compatibility
of the HE and VHE long-term results is suggestive of a common physical link as
it might be introduced by an underlying jet-disk connection.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figure
Detection of variable VHE gamma-ray emission from the extra-galactic gamma-ray binary LMC P3
Context. Recently, the high-energy (HE, 0.1-100 GeV) -ray emission
from the object LMC P3 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been discovered
to be modulated with a 10.3-day period, making it the first extra-galactic
-ray binary.
Aims. This work aims at the detection of very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV)
-ray emission and the search for modulation of the VHE signal with the
orbital period of the binary system.
Methods. LMC P3 has been observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System
(H.E.S.S.); the acceptance-corrected exposure time is 100 h. The data set has
been folded with the known orbital period of the system in order to test for
variability of the emission. Energy spectra are obtained for the orbit-averaged
data set, and for the orbital phase bin around the VHE maximum.
Results. VHE -ray emission is detected with a statistical
significance of 6.4 . The data clearly show variability which is
phase-locked to the orbital period of the system. Periodicity cannot be deduced
from the H.E.S.S. data set alone. The orbit-averaged luminosity in the
TeV energy range is erg/s. A luminosity of erg/s is reached during 20% of the orbit. HE and VHE
-ray emissions are anti-correlated. LMC P3 is the most luminous
