Seismic Attributes for Carbonates

Seismic attributes can reveal important information about rock properties, and rock physics modeling provide a link between geological and seismic parameters. Carbonate rocks can have wide variations in properties due to their origin and susceptibility to post-depositional diagenetic processes. Thus, quantification of factors influencing seismic properties is important for seismic inversion. Porosity, pore shapes, depth and pressure, mineralogy, and fluid saturation are important factors affecting carbonate rock properties. Rock physics modeling can be used as a tool to study the seismic effects of such factors. By exploring seismic velocities and amplitude versus offset (AVO) responses, in addition to utilizing rock physics templates (RTP) as an analytical tool, trends for different rock property factors have been observed for a synthetic carbonate model. Porosity and pore-shapes is observed to have a major importance for effective seismic responses, while mineralogy is less determent. Due to the fact that rocks with different properties may have similar seismic velocities, or comparable AVO responses, differentiation and quantification of various property-affecting factors is essential for inversion purposes. Comparison of responses viewed by different analytical methods enhances such differentiation and quantification. The importance of evaluating AVO responses in accordance with background trend is demonstrated, and AVO analysis can serve as an important method for fluid detection.Master i Geovitenskap - PetroleumsgeofagMAMN-GVPETGEOVPET

Tv-nyheder fra hjemlandet – integration eller ghettoisering? Om transnationalisme og nyhedsforbrug

Hvilken rolle spiller medierne i hverdagslivet blandt etniske minoriteter i Danmark?

Women’s Islamic activities in a transnational perspective This article discusses the potential of Islamic activism to assist in the integration of immigrant Muslims in Europe. Islamic activism is conceived as a social space of trans-national activity, for instance connecting Moroccan immigrants in Denmark with their homeland. The discussion is based on material from Fes, Morocco and Copenhagen, Denmark. The development of “transnationalism from below” takes place in the micro-dynamics of migrants’ social practices, and reaches beyond national borders. Instruction in the Quran, which Moroccan work migrants received in their childhood, is reactivated in Copenhagen when their daughters take up Quran study. These daughters organize religious instruction according to centuries’ old principles from Morocco and the Middle East. In Fes, Islamist activist women are preoccupied with promoting social reform among their fellow Muslims. In Copenhagen they are engaged in activities that aim to integrate immigrant women into Danish society. In both countries, however, Islamist women strive to teach other Muslim women how to practice and understand their religion. In Copenhagen, teaching iqh (Muslim jurisprudence) assists the new Muslim population to articulate a Muslim standpoint in their new homeland. The article challenges the assumption that maintenance of connections to the country of emigration necessarily delays integration in the new homeland. It claims that Islamic activism constitutes a step towards the formation of a local Muslim identity

Teaching Gender in a Transnational Perspective – Challenges, Resistances and Strategies

Get PDF
This opening article argues for the need for adopting a transnational perspective in the teaching of gender in the classroom, an approach which has considerable resemblance with Mohanty’s ‘Feminist solidarity or comparative feminist studies model’ of teaching. The article contributes to an on-going scholarly debate on the teaching of gender in higher education by specifying how the transnational feminist perspective could be adopted in practice, both in classrooms andin cooperation between universities. Three points that this perspective gives rise to – the translations of gender, the inherent teaching strategies, and the teaching pedagogy involved – are discussed as they call for reflections on the power dynamics between researchers from the Global North and South and the representations of these poles in class-rooms. The article concludeswith some more concrete suggestions for addressing, rather than silencing, the transnational dimension embedded in the practice of teaching gender

Transethnic Genome-Wide Association Study Provides Insights in the Genetic Architecture and Heritability of Long QT Syndrome

BACKGROUND: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a rare genetic disorder and a major preventable cause of sudden cardiac death in the young. A causal rare genetic variant with large effect size is identified in up to 80% of probands (genotype positive) and cascade family screening shows incomplete penetrance of genetic variants. Furthermore, a proportion of cases meeting diagnostic criteria for LQTS remain genetically elusive despite genetic testing of established genes (genotype negative). These observations raise the possibility that common genetic variants with small effect size contribute to the clinical picture of LQTS. This study aimed to characterize and quantify the contribution of common genetic variation to LQTS disease susceptibility. METHODS: We conducted genome-wide association studies followed by transethnic meta-analysis in 1656 unrelated patients with LQTS of European or Japanese ancestry and 9890 controls to identify susceptibility single nucleotide polymorphisms. We estimated the common variant heritability of LQTS and tested the genetic correlation between LQTS susceptibility and other cardiac traits. Furthermore, we tested the aggregate effect of the 68 single nucleotide polymorphisms previously associated with the QT-interval in the general population using a polygenic risk score. RESULTS: Genome-wide association analysis identified 3 loci associated with LQTS at genome-wide statistical significance (P<5×10-8) near NOS1AP, KCNQ1, and KLF12, and 1 missense variant in KCNE1(p.Asp85Asn) at the suggestive threshold (P<10-6). Heritability analyses showed that ≈15% of variance in overall LQTS susceptibility was attributable to common genetic variation (h2SNP 0.148; standard error 0.019). LQTS susceptibility showed a strong genome-wide genetic correlation with the QT-interval in the general population (rg=0.40; P=3.2×10-3). The polygenic risk score comprising common variants previously associated with the QT-interval in the general population was greater in LQTS cases compared with controls (P<10-13), and it is notable that, among patients with LQTS, this polygenic risk score was greater in patients who were genotype negative compared with those who were genotype positive (P<0.005). CONCLUSIONS: This work establishes an important role for common genetic variation in susceptibility to LQTS. We demonstrate overlap between genetic control of the QT-interval in the general population and genetic factors contributing to LQTS susceptibility. Using polygenic risk score analyses aggregating common genetic variants that modulate the QT-interval in the general population, we provide evidence for a polygenic architecture in genotype negative LQTS.</p
