Extracting speech text from comics
Overall, it has been challenging to find solutions able to correctly extract distinct types
of text balloons from any sort of comics, but in particulary from complex comic books.
The challenge comes from the fact that there is no general extraction algorithm in
the literature capable of handling any text balloons without making any assumption
regarding color depth of the image, orientation or language of the text. Even worse,
it is the fact that the comics art evolves over time, so that there is some degree of
unpredictability associated to comics. This means that, an algorithm may work well for
comic books released twenty years ago, but not so well for current comic books, even
considering they belong to the same category or series.
With this dissertation it is intended to present a possible solution to this problem, by
introducing an algorithm capable of extracting text balloons from comic book pages.
The presented algorithm, here called CCD (components and corners detection), relies in
the concept of corner detection to identify text snippets inside balloon candidates. So,
after discarding a significant number of regions that are not considered as tentative text
balloons for one reason or another, we look at the shape of the holes of the remaining
regions to check if they still hold a significant number of corners capable to make a
candidate be classified as text balloon.
O algoritmo apresentado, aqui designado por CCD (components and corners
Mass communication and structural violence
This paper connects two dimensions of violence present in the Peace Research Studies. From Galtung’s known classification, in this essay we connect two types of violence: the structural (exclusion, inequality) and the cultural (or legitimization of the violence). From the overlapping of three spheres of communicative exclusion with three models which approach the inequality in communication, we obtain the lines of investigation we propose for the study of the inequality in the communicative area. It is a theoretical reflection that pays attention to the different methodologies used in the study of the communicative phenomenon and their usefulness for the study of inequality in the cultural area
Psychophysiological stress markers and behavioural differences between rural and city primary school students
Academic performance could be affected by multiple factors, including stress and learning environment location. The aim of this study was to analyze differences in psychophysiological stress markers, behavior and academic performance of rural and city students. A sample of 181 children (7.91 ± 2.29 years) from elementary schools were evaluated on their grades, subjective academic performance, heart rate variability, state anxiety, nutritional information and physical activity habits. Results presented significant higher values in parasympathetic modulation and physical education grades in rural students than in city students, who showed higher significant values in state anxiety, the ability to complete tasks, physical activity habits and several items relating to their food and drink habits. No significant differences were found in the average grades between the two groups. However, some correlations were found between school performance and stress, physical fitness and nutritional habits. Thus, school location may affect the stress and anxiety status, nutritional habits and physical activities of students, but there were no significant differences in academic performance. In addition, body mass index, quantity of food intake and stress markers may be related to the academic performance attained
A Replacement Technique to Maximize Task Reuse in Reconfigurable Systems
Dynamically reconfigurable hardware is a promising technology that combines in the same device both the high performance and the flexibility that many recent applications demand. However, one of its main drawbacks is the reconfiguration overhead, which involves important delays in the task execution, usually in the order of hundreds of milliseconds, as well as high energy consumption. One of the most powerful ways to tackle this problem is configuration reuse, since reusing a task does not involve any reconfiguration overhead. In this paper we propose a configuration replacement policy for reconfigurable systems that maximizes task reuse in highly dynamic environments. We have integrated this policy in an external taskgraph execution manager that applies task prefetch by loading and executing the tasks as soon as possible (ASAP). However, we have also modified this ASAP technique in order to make the replacements more flexible, by taking into account the mobility of the tasks and delaying some of the reconfigurations. In addition, this replacement policy is a hybrid design-time/run-time approach, which performs the bulk of the computations at design time in order to save run-time computations. Our results illustrate that the proposed strategy outperforms other state-ofthe-art replacement policies in terms of reuse rates and achieves near-optimal reconfiguration overhead reductions. In addition, by performing the bulk of the computations at design time, we reduce the execution time of the replacement technique by 10 times with respect to an equivalent purely run-time one
FootSpring: A Compliance Model for the ATHLETE Family of Robots
This paper describes and evaluates one method of modeling compliance in a wheel-on-leg walking robot. This method assumes that all of the robot s compliance takes place at the ground contact points, specifically the tires and legs, and that the rest of the robot is rigid. Optimization is used to solve for the displacement of the feet and of the center of gravity. This method was tested on both robots of the ATHLETE family, which have different compliance. For both robots, the model predicts the sag of points on the robot chassis with an average error of about one percent of the height of the robot
An Approach to Manage Reconfigurations and Reduce Area Cost in Hard Real-Time Reconfigurable Systems
This article presents a methodology to build real-time reconfigurable systems that ensure that all the temporal constraints of a set of applications are met, while optimizing the utilization of the available reconfigurable resources. Starting from a static platform that meets all the real-time deadlines, our approach takes advantage of run-time reconfiguration in order to reduce the area needed while guaranteeing that all the deadlines are still met. This goal is achieved by identifying which tasks must be always ready for execution in order to meet the deadlines, and by means of a methodology that also allows reducing the area requirements
Energy is the principle key which sustains the growth and competitiveness of a region. Modern society is based on technology and it needs energy as much as water and food. Nevertheless, obtaining energy, as it has been done so far, will bring detrimental consequences in a shorter time than expected. These consequences are capable of altering the life to the point of no return, if not taken into account.
The main premises on which energy production, to avoid the energy and environmental problems expected in a short term, should focus on are to ensure a reliable supply and stable energy prices, protect the environment by eliminating the emission of greenhouse gases and achieve development and competitiveness.
The technical feasibility of renewable energy to meet these targets is proven, and the development of this project is going to show that viability through the detailed description of the current state of the technology.
The selected technology is the solar concentration through parabolic trough collectors that concentrate the normal direct radiation at the focus of the parabola to increase the temperature of the thermal oil. This temperature difference is used in a water-steam cycle to produce electric power.
It is going to proceed to simulate the behavior of the electrical power generated throughout the day after determining the operating parameters, the selection of the elements present in the plant and the thermodynamic states of water-steam cycle.
Thus, it is going to show the huge development that the technology of solar thermal power plants has acquired in recent decades, as well as the great potential they have. This potential places them on a main situation to counter the energy and environmental problems in the future, because, definitely, solar radiation is free and the change of the energy model will go parallel to change this kind of mentality.Ingeniería Mecánic
current clinical practice and available resources
Objective To assess European pediatric rheumatology providers’ current
clinical practices and resources used in the transition from child-centered to
adult-oriented care. Methods European pediatric rheumatologists were invited
to complete a 17-item anonymized e-survey assessing current transition
practices, transition policy awareness, and needs in advance of the
publication of EULAR/PReS recommendations on transition. Results The response
rate was 121/276 (44%), including responses from 115 centers in 22 European
Union countries. Although 32/121 (26%) responded that their centers did not
offer transition services, the majority (99%) agreed that a formalized process
in transitioning patients to adult care is necessary. A minority (<30%) of
respondents stated that they have a written transition policy although 46%
have an informal transition process. Designated staff to support transitional
care were available in a minority of centers: nurse (35%), physiotherapist
(15%), psychologist (15%), social worker (8%), and occupational therapist
(2%). The existence of a designated team member to coordinate transition was
acknowledged in many centers (64% of respondents) although just 36% use a
checklist for young people as part of individualized transitional care.
Conclusion This survey of European pediatric rheumatology providers regarding
transitional care practices demonstrates agreement that transitional care is
important, and wide variation in current provision of transition services
exists
