    Efetividade do Instrumento Antidumping no Brasil entre 1990 e 2007

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-dumping instrument in Brazil two aspects: the relationship between antidumping filings and macroeconomic factors; and the effects of macroeconomic variables and industry size on the likelihood of petitioner law enforcement antidumping. The results showed that macroeconomic variables have no effect on the number of antidumping filings for the Brazilian economy from 1990 to 2007. Moreover, result supports the hypothesis that adverse scenarios in the national economy and the specific characteristics of sectors petitioners for the increased probability of conclude by the application of antidumping law, reducing its effectiveness.Antidumping, Variáveis Macroeconômicas, Efetividade de Política

    Impactos de medidas "antidumping" adotadas pelos EUA sobre o setor siderúrgico de Minas Gerais e o restante do Brasil

    The aim of this paper was to analyze the effect of the United States antidumping policy over exports by the steelmaking industry of Minas Gerais between 1999 and 2002. The results showed antidumping to be an instrument which had a significant effect on the decrease in trade flows. After the analyses of the integration between econometrics results and the inter-regional input-product matrices, it was possible to conclude that the most affected sector was steelmaking, with 75% of the total product effects in the period. With regards to employment, the average impact on the Minas Gerais steelmaking industry was more than 50% of the total new job opportunities, if neither antidumping measure had been adopted; and the steelmaking industry of the other regions of the country would be responsible for more than 16% of job opportunities created in the period.Analisar o impacto de medidas antidumping aplicadas pelos Estados Unidos sobre exportações do setor siderúrgico de Minas Gerais, para o período entre 1999 e 2002, foi o objetivo deste trabalho. Os resultados mostraram que tal medida teve efeitos estatisticamente significativos sobre a redução no fluxo de comércio. Na análise da integração dos resultados econométricos com a abordagem de matrizes inter-regionais de insumo-produto, foi possível concluir que o setor mais afetado, no que se refere à produção, seria a siderurgia mineira, em que o impacto representou mais de 75% do total, no período em análise. Com relação ao emprego, o impacto sobre a siderurgia de Minas Gerais corresponde, em média, a mais de 50% do total de vagas que seriam criadas, caso nenhuma medida antidumping tivesse sido adotada; e a siderurgia do restante do país seria responsável por mais de 16% dos postos de trabalho criados no período

    Aerocyte specification and lung adaptation to breathing is dependent on alternative splicing changes

Alveoli are the lung gas exchange units and their development, from late embryonic to early postnatal stages, requires feedbacks between multiple cell types. However, how the crosstalk between the alveolar cell types is modulated to anticipate lung adaptation to breathing is still unclear. Here, we uncovered a synchronous alternative splicing switch in multiple genes in the developing mouse lungs at the transition to birth, and we identified hnRNP A1, Cpeb4, and Elavl2/HuB as putative splicing regulators of this transition. Notably, we found that Vegfa switches from the Vegfa 164 isoform to the longer Vegfa 188 isoform exclusively in lung alveolar epithelial AT1 cells. Functional analysis revealed that VEGFA 188 (and not VEGFA 164) drives the specification of Car4-positive aerocytes, a subtype of alveolar endothelial cells specialized in gas exchanges.     Congenital Zika syndrome is associated with maternal protein malnutrition

    Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy is associated with a spectrum of developmental impairments known as congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). The prevalence of this syndrome varies across ZIKV endemic regions, suggesting that its occurrence could depend on cofactors. Here, we evaluate the relevance of protein malnutrition for the emergence of CZS. Epidemiological data from the ZIKV outbreak in the Americas suggest a relationship between undernutrition and cases of microcephaly. To experimentally examine this relationship, we use immunocompetent pregnant mice, which were subjected to protein malnutrition and infected with a Brazilian ZIKV strain. We found that the combination of protein restriction and ZIKV infection leads to severe alterations of placental structure and embryonic body growth, with offspring displaying a reduction in neurogenesis and postnatal brain size. RNA-seq analysis reveals gene expression deregulation required for brain development in infected low-protein progeny.     Characterization of Dengue Virus Type 2: New Insights on the 2010 Brazilian Epidemic

    Dengue viruses (DENV) serotypes 1, 2, and 3 have been causing yearly outbreaks in Brazil. In this study, we report the re-introduction of DENV2 in the coast of São Paulo State. Partial envelope viral genes were sequenced from eighteen patients with dengue fever during the 2010 epidemic. Phylogenetic analysis showed this strain belongs to the American/Asian genotype and was closely related to the virus that circulated in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 and 2008. The phylogeny also showed no clustering by clinical presentation, suggesting that the disease severity could not be explained by distinct variants or genotypes. The time of the most recent common ancestor of American/Asian genotype and the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (SP/RJ) monophyletic cluster was estimated to be around 40 and 10 years, respectively. Since this virus was first identified in Brazil in 2007, we suggest that it was already circulating in the country before causing the first documented outbreak. This is the first description of the 2010 outbreak in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and should contribute to efforts to control and monitor the spread of DENVs in endemic areas

    High connectivity of the Crocodile Shark between the Atlantic and Southwest Indian Oceans: highlights for conservation

    Among the various shark species that are captured as bycatch in commercial fishing operations, the group of pelagic sharks is still one of the least studied and known. Within those, the crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai, a small-sized lamnid shark, is occasionally caught by longline vessels in certain regions of the tropical oceans worldwide. However, the population dynamics of this species, as well as the impact of fishing mortality on its stocks, are still unknown, with the crocodile shark currently one of the least studied of all pelagic sharks. Given this, the present study aimed to assess the population structure of P. kamoharai in several regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans using genetic molecular markers. The nucleotide composition of the mitochondrial DNA control region of 255 individuals was analyzed, and 31 haplotypes were found, with an estimated diversity Hd = 0.627, and a nucleotide diversity pi = 0.00167. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed a fixation index phi(ST) = -0.01118, representing an absence of population structure among the sampled regions of the Atlantic Ocean, and between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These results show a high degree of gene flow between the studied areas, with a single genetic stock and reduced population variability. In panmictic populations, conservation efforts can be concentrated in more restricted areas, being these representative of the total biodiversity of the species.     Predicted Impact of COVID-19 on Neglected Tropical Disease Programs and the Opportunity for Innovation

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many key neglected tropical disease (NTD) activities have been postponed. This hindrance comes at a time when the NTDs are progressing towards their ambitious goals for 2030. Mathematical modelling on several NTDs, namely gambiense sleeping sickness, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH), trachoma, and visceral leishmaniasis, shows that the impact of this disruption will vary across the diseases. Programs face a risk of resurgence, which will be fastest in high-transmission areas. Furthermore, of the mass drug administration diseases, schistosomiasis, STH, and trachoma are likely to encounter faster resurgence. The case-finding diseases (gambiense sleeping sickness and visceral leishmaniasis) are likely to have fewer cases being detected but may face an increasing underlying rate of new infections. However, once programs are able to resume, there are ways to mitigate the impact and accelerate progress towards the 2030 goals.</p
