Project-based learning in audiovisual translation: a case study in error analysis

As professors of audiovisual translation (AVT) in higher education institutions in Portugal, we have been concerned with the teaching of AVT, namely subtitling. In an attempt to prepare our students for the job market, we follow a constructivist approach, in line with Kiraly’s (2005) project-based learning. A dimension we cannot overlook in this context is the identification and analysis of subtitling errors, which we elaborate on according to Kuo (2014), Robert and Remael (2016) and Pedersen’s (2017) research. Thus, we chose a sample of nine films that were the target of our students’ projects from the last five academic years and pinpointed their errors, by following the analysis grid we put together for this purpose, which is based on temporal and spatial constraints, and stylistic, typographical and translation considerations. With this exercise in mind, we were able to conclude that segmentation and reading time of subtitles pose the greatest difficulty for our students.publishe

Multicultural teams : a comparative study beyond comanies' branches in Stavanger

VID Specialized University, Stavanger, December 2016This Study has been conducted in two different departments of two different companies in Stavanger, with a strong international work force. The research question intended to find answers to the following: “In what way and to what extent do foreign workers feel discriminated against their fellow Norwegians?”. This working population, who has not yet been in the centre of academic research; has become an important work task force and is, therefore, critical to understand their daily working challenges and how they perceive them. This study demonstrates that in this cohort majority of the international participants do feel discriminated at work in when it comes to promotions are diminished when compared to their Norwegians colleagues. The different discrimination situations are specially related to the lack of proficiency in the native language, and to gender related issues. Three decades of strategic management research on M&As: Citations, co-citations, and topics

Merger and acquisitions (M&As) strategies have been growingly deployed by firms for their domestic and international expansion, to redefine their business scope or take advantage of emerging opportunities. In this paper we conduct a bibliometric study of the extant strategy research on M&As, assessed by the articles published in the main journal for strategic management studies over the period 1984-2010. Results reveal the highest impact works (articles and books), the intellectual ties among authors and theories that form five main clusters of research, and the topics delved into. Performance effects, M&As as diversification strategies and RBV and capabilities-based topics have dominated the extant research. The study contributes to the extant knowledge on M&As by taking stock of the accumulated knowledge and research direction, complementing other literature reviews with a strategic management specific perspective. O impacto das disfunções temporomandibulares crónicas na qualidade de vida

As disfunções temporomandibulares constituem um significativo problema de saúde pública, com incidência entre 5-12%, e consistem em alterações patológicas da articulação temporomandibular, dos músculos mastigatórios e/ou das estruturas associadas. A dor persistente relacionada com as disfunções temporomandibulares é considerada a terceira condição de dor crónica mais prevalente, a nível mundial, sendo que esta cronicidade pode acarretar um comprometimento das atividades diárias, nas vertentes: funcional, psicossocial, psicológica e, subsequentemente, da qualidade de vida dos pacientes acometidos. Esta revisão bibliográfica narrativa tem como objetivo aprofundar o estudo do impacto das disfunções temporomandibulares crónicas, nomeadamente, ao nível da qualidade de vida de pacientes, de forma a contribuir para a conscientização da sua importância aquando da terapêutica.Temporomandibular disorders constitute a significant public health problem, with a prevalence between 5-12%, and consist of pathological changes of the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory muscles and/or the associated structures. Persistent pain related to temporomandibular disorders is the third most common chronic pain condition worldwide, and this chronicity may lead to the impairment of daily activities, namely: on a functional, psychosocial, psychological level, and subsequently, of the patient’s quality of life. This literature review, aims to deepen the study of chronic temporomandibular disorders’ impact, on the patient’s quality of life, in order to contribute to the awareness of its importance specifically during the therapeutic approach. Reabilitação neuropsicológica na doença de Alzheimer: Efeitos de uma intervenção para reabilitação de doentes com demência de Alzheimer

A doença de Alzheimer é sempre associada a défices neuropsicológicos. No entanto, existe pouca investigação que analise os efeitos das intervenções de reabilitação, especialmente com pacientes portugueses. Este estudo investigou a influência de um programa de reabilitação neuropsicológica, com base em exercícios práticos por forma a capacitar os pacientes com estratégias compensatórias, propiciando a melhoria das funções cognitivas e da qualidade de vida. O estudo teve um desenho quase-experimental, e foi realizado com um grupo experimental e um grupo de controlo em duas fases: avaliação pré-teste e pós-teste para todos os participantes e intervenção com o grupo experimental. Trinta e duas pessoas de ambos os géneros (16 homens e 16 mulheres), com idades compreendidas entre os 60 e os 82 anos, participaram neste estudo. Todos os intervenientes foram submetidos a uma única aplicação da Bateria de Lisboa para Avaliação das Demências (BLAD) e da Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) antes e depois da reabilitação. A intervenção consistiu em 48 sessões individuais com a duração de 60 minutos cada e com um descanso de cerca de 10 minutos. Os resultados mostram que existem diferenças significativas, comparando o pré-teste e o pós-teste em todas as dimensões cognitivas em que foi possível computar as ANCOVAS, excepto na função da escrita. Concluímos que o programa de reabilitação é eficaz e que tem uma importante implicação neuropsicológica, uma vez que mostra que é possível adiar a progressão da doença de Alzheimer nos primeiros anos da doença, através da sua aplicação em contexto terapêutico e/ou familia

Relação existente entre as exportações e as restrições financeiras das empresas industriais do setor têxtil

Dissertação de Mestrado em Finanças EmpresariaisA presente dissertação visa verificar qual a relação existente entre Exportações e Restrições Financeiras das Empresas Industriais do Setor Têxtil português. A maioria da literatura teórica e empírica de finanças internacionais, tende a afirmar que as restrições financeiras impedem o crescimento e a internacionalização das empresas; contudo, são poucos os autores que conseguem provar empiricamente e explicar o porquê das exportações poderem aumentar o acesso das empresas a fundos financeiros externos e, por conseguinte, poderem vir a diminuir as restrições financeiras, melhorando a saúde financeira dessas empresas. No presente trabalho, para estudo dos problemas mencionados anteriormente, a análise empírica será feita através do uso conjunto de duas bases de dados microeconómicas (no período 1996-2003) fornecidas pelo Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) e referentes a dados económico-financeiros e a exportações. A metodologia escolhida para a medição das restrições financeiras passa pela criação de um score financeiro, na sequência da proposta de Musso e Schiavo, (2008). Com esta dissertação, pretendemos averiguar qual o score de restrições financeiras sentidas pelas empresas da amostra, avaliar até que ponto as restrições financeiras são ou não um entrave ao início da atividade e verificar se as exportações efetivamente melhoram a saúde financeira das empresas. Dos resultados obtidos, através de análise de regressão, sugere-se a ideia de que existe de facto a autoseleção das empresas menos restringidas financeiramente para a futura atividade exportadora e ainda que as novas empresas exportadoras mostram melhorias na sua situação financeira.The purpose of the following dissertation is to verify the existing relationship between Exports and Financial Restrictions of the Industrial Companies of the Portuguese Textile Sector. The majority of the existing theoretical and empirical literature regarding international finances tends to claim that financial restrictions prevent the growth and the internationalization of companies; however, there are few authors that can prove empirically and explain why do exports have the potential to increase the companies’ access to foreign financial funds and, as a consequence, decrease their financial restrictions, increasing the financial health of these companies. In this dissertation, to study the problems previously mentioned, the empirical analysis will be made through the conjoined use of two micro- economical databases (from the 1996-2003 period), provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and pertaining to financial-economical data and exports. The chosen methodology for the measurement of the financial restrictions starts with the creation of a financial score, in lieu of the proposal from Musso and Schiavo, (2008). With this dissertation, we seek to discover what is the score of financial restrictions felt by the companies in our sample, to evaluate to what extent are financial restrictions a hindrance to the beginning of activity, and to verify if exports effectively improve the companies’ financial health. From our collected results, through regression analysis, we suggest the idea that there is in fact an auto-selection from the less financially restricted companies towards future exporting activity, and also that the new exporting companies show improvement in their financial situation

O Pacto da Memória : Interpretação e Identidade na Fonte Bíblica

Interpretação das fontes bíblica e talmúdica na Tradição Judaica. Compreendemos os textos bíblico e talmúdico como sendo um projeto de construção da memória. Essa memória, construída literariamente a partir de uma tradição oral e escrita, evidencia uma relação singular entre o humano e o divino e procura legitimar em seu discurso a idéia de uma Religião e Tradição do Livro. Essa memória constitui, então, o elemento essencial no projeto de construção da identidade individual ou coletiva do Povo do Livro (em hebraico, Am Ha'Sefer). Estabelecemos a relação memória e religião tendo como elemento central a palavra hebraica zikaron "lembrança, memória". A originalidade do presente projeto é elencar um conjunto de elementos nos quais se articulam a construção e formação da identidade e memória no Judaísmo tendo como referencial as fontes judaicas, em particular, as produzidas em língua hebraica.
