Quantitative evaluation of motor function before and after engraftment of dopaminergic neurons in a rat model of Parkinson's disease
Although gait change is considered a useful indicator of severity in animal models of Parkinson's disease, systematic and extensive gait analysis in animal models of neurological deficits is not well established. The CatWalk-assisted automated gait analysis system provides a comprehensive way to assess a number of dynamic and static gait parameters simultaneously. In this study, we used the Catwalk system to investigate changes in gait parameters in adult rats with unilateral 6-OHDA-induced lesions and the rescue effect of dopaminergic neuron transplantation on gait function. Four weeks after 6-OHDA injection, the intensity and maximal area of contact were significantly decreased in the affected paws and the swing speed significantly decreased in all four paws. The relative distance between the hind paws also increased, suggesting that animals with unilateral 6-OHDA-induced lesions required all four paws to compensate for loss of balance function. At 8 weeks post-transplantation, engrafted dopaminergic neurons expressed tyrosine hydroxylase. In addition, the intensity, contact area, and swing speed of the four limbs increased and the distance between the hind paws decreased. Partial recovery of methamphetamine-induced rotational response was also noted
NMR quantum computation with indirectly coupled gates
An NMR realization of a two-qubit quantum gate which processes quantum
information indirectly via couplings to a spectator qubit is presented in the
context of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. This enables a successful comprehensive
NMR implementation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm for functions with three
argument bits and demonstrates a technique essential for multi-qubit quantum
computation.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. 10 additional figures illustrating output spectr
Polariton propagation in weak confinement quantum wells
Exciton-polariton propagation in a quantum well, under centre-of-mass
quantization, is computed by a variational self-consistent microscopic theory.
The Wannier exciton envelope functions basis set is given by the simple
analytical model of ref. [1], based on pure states of the centre-of-mass wave
vector, free from fitting parameters and "ad hoc" (the so called additional
boundary conditions-ABCs) assumptions. In the present paper, the former
analytical model is implemented in order to reproduce the centre-of-mass
quantization in a large range of quantum well thicknesses (5a_B < L < inf.).
The role of the dynamical transition layer at the well/barrier interfaces is
discussed at variance of the classical Pekar's dead-layer and ABCs. The Wannier
exciton eigenstates are computed, and compared with various theoretical models
with different degrees of accuracy. Exciton-polariton transmission spectra in
large quantum wells (L>> a_B) are computed and compared with experimental
results of Schneider et al.\cite{Schneider} in high quality GaAs samples. The
sound agreement between theory and experiment allows to unambiguously assign
the exciton-polariton dips of the transmission spectrum to the pure states of
the Wannier exciton center-of-mass quantization.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures; will appear in Phys.Rev.
de Sitter String Vacua from Supersymmetric D-terms
We propose a new mechanism for obtaining de Sitter vacua in type IIB string
theory compactified on (orientifolded) Calabi-Yau manifolds similar to those
recently studied by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT). dS vacuum
appears in KKLT model after uplifting an AdS vacuum by adding an anti-D3-brane,
which explicitly breaks supersymmetry. We accomplish the same goal by adding
fluxes of gauge fields within the D7-branes, which induce a D-term potential in
the effective 4D action. In this way we obtain dS space as a spontaneously
broken vacuum from a purely supersymmetric 4D action. We argue that our
approach can be directly extended to heterotic string vacua, with the dilaton
potential obtained from a combination of gaugino condensation and the D-terms
generated by anomalous U(1) gauge groups.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figur
Perturbative Approach to Higher Derivative Theories with Fermions
We extend the perturbative approach developed in an earlier work to deal with
Lagrangians which have arbitrary higher order time derivative terms for both
bosons and fermions. This approach enables us to find an effective Lagrangian
with only first time derivatives order by order in the coupling constant. As in
the pure bosonic case, to the first order, the quantized Hamiltonian is bounded
from below whenever the potential is. We show in the example of a single
complex fermion that higher derivative interactions result in an effective mass
and change of vacuum for the low energy modes. The supersymmetric
noncommutative Wess-Zumino model is considered as another example. We also
comment on the higher derivative terms in Witten's string field theory and the
effectiveness of level truncation.Comment: Latex, 21 pages, minor modification, ref. adde
Observation of Orbitally Excited B_s Mesons
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with
states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar
collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed
as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+,
\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1})
= 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.Comment: Version accepted and published by Phys. Rev. Let
Global Search for New Physics with 2.0/fb at CDF
Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for
indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on
particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with
the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers
gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section
physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional
algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for "bumps"
that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth
procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This
combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at
sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Final version which appeared in Physical Review D

Search for chargino-neutralino production in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present the results of a search for associated production of the chargino
and neutralino supersymmetric particles using up to 1.1 fb-1 of integrated
luminosity collected by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron ppbar collider at
a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The search is conducted by analyzing
events with a large transverse momentum imbalance and either three charged
leptons or two charged leptons of the same electric charge. The numbers of
observed events are found to be consistent with standard model expectations.
Upper limits on the production cross section are derived in different
theoretical models. In one of these models a lower limit on the mass of the
chargino is set at 129 GeV/c^2 at the 95% confidence level.Comment: To be submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar collisions at sqrt s = 1.96 TeV in the All Hadronic Decay Mode
We report a measurement of the ttbar production cross section using the
CDF-II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The analysis is performed using 311
pb-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The data consist of events
selected with six or more hadronic jets with additional kinematic requirements.
At least one of these jets must be identified as a b-quark jet by the
reconstruction of a secondary vertex. The cross section is measured to be
sigma(tbart)=7.5+-2.1(stat.)+3.3-2.2(syst.)+0.5-0.4(lumi.) pb, which is
consistent with the standard model prediction.Comment: By CDF collaboratio
Search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of top quarks in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
7 pages, 2 figuresWe report the recent charged Higgs search in top quark decays in 2.2/fb CDF data. This is the first attempt to search for charged Higgs using fully reconstructed mass assuming H->c-sbar in small tan beta region. No evidence of a charged Higgs is observed in the CDF data, hence 95% upper limits are placed at B(t->H+b)We report on the first direct search for charged Higgs bosons decaying into cs̅ in tt̅ events produced by pp̅ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV. The search uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab and looks for a resonance in the invariant mass distribution of two jets in the lepton+jets sample of tt̅ candidates. We observe no evidence of charged Higgs bosons in top quark decays. Hence, 95% upper limits on the top quark decay branching ratio are placed at B(t→H+b)< 0.1 to 0.3 for charged Higgs boson masses of 60 to 150 GeV/c2 assuming B(H+→cs̅ )=1.0. The upper limits on B(t→H+b) are also used as model-independent limits on the decay branching ratio of top quarks to generic scalar charged bosons beyond the standard model.Peer reviewe
