    Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.VIII

    Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity variations are presented for the seventh set of ten close binary systems: V410 Aur, V523 Cas, QW Gem, V921 Her, V2357 Oph, V1130 Tau, HN UMa, HX UMa, HD 93917, NSV 223. All systems, but three (V523 Cas, HD 93917, NSV 223), were discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission. All systems are double-lined (SB2) binaries and all, but the detached, very close system V1130 Tau, are contact binaries. The broadening-function permitted improvement of the orbital elements for V523 Cas, which was the only system observed before for radial velocity variations.     Planetesimal-driven planet migration in the presence of a gas disk

    We report here on an extension of a previous study by Kirsh et al. (2009) of planetesimal-driven migration using our N-body code SyMBA (Duncan et al., 1998). The previous work focused on the case of a single planet of mass Mem, immersed in a planetesimal disk with a power-law surface density distribution and Rayleigh distributed eccentricities and inclinations. Typically 10^4-10^5 equal-mass planetesimals were used, where the gravitational force (and the back-reaction) on each planetesimal by the Sun and planetwere included, while planetesimal-planetesimal interactions were neglected. The runs reported on here incorporate the dynamical effects of a gas disk, where the Adachi et al. (1976) prescription of aerodynamic gas drag is implemented for all bodies. In some cases the Papaloizou and Larwood (2000) prescription of Type-I migration for the planet are implemented, as well as a mass distribution. In the gas-free cases, rapid planet migration was observed - at a rate independent of the planet's mass - provided the planet's mass was not large compared to the mass in planetesimals capable of entering its Hill sphere. In such cases, both inward and outward migrations can be self-sustaining, but there is a strong propensity for inward migration. When a gas disk is present, aerodynamic drag can substantially modify the dynamics of scattered planetesimals. For sufficiently large or small mono-dispersed planetesimals, the planet typically migrates inward. However, for a range of plausible planetesimal sizes (i.e. 0.5-5.0 km at 5.0 AU in a minimum mass Hayashi disk) outward migration is usually triggered, often accompanied by substantial planetary mass accretion. The origins of this behaviour are explained in terms of a toy model.     Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity variations are presented for the eighth set of ten close binary systems: AB And, V402 Aur, V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, BX Dra, V918 Her, V502 Oph, V1363 Ori, KP Peg, V335 Peg. Half of the systems (V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, V918 Her, V1363 Ori, V335 Peg) were discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission and all systems are double-lined (SB2) contact binaries. The broadening function method permitted improvement of the orbital elements for AB And and V502 Oph. The other systems have been observed for radial velocity variations for the first time; in this group are five bright (V<7.5) binaries: V445 Cep, V2082 Cyg, V918 Her, KP Peg and V335 Peg.     Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity variations are presented for the sixth set of ten close binary systems: SV Cam, EE Cet, KR Com, V410 Cyg, GM Dra, V972 Her, ET Leo, FS Leo, V2388 Oph, II UMa. All systems except FS Leo are double-lined spectroscopic binaries. The type of FS Leo is unknown while SV Cam is a close, detached binary; all remaining systems are contact binaries. Eight binaries (all except SV Cam and V401 Cyg) are the recent photometric discoveries of the Hipparcos satellite project. Five systems, EE Cet, KR Com, V401 Cyg, V2388 Oph, II UMa, are members of visual/spectroscopic triple systems. We were able to observe the close binary system EE Cet separately of its companion, but in the remaining four systems we could separate the spectral components only through the use of the broadening-function approach.     Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries

    Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

    A vertebrate microsite from a marine-terrestrial transition in the Foremost Formation (Campanian) of Alberta, Canada, and the use of faunal assemblage data as a paleoenvironmental indicator

    Vertebrate microfossil assemblages contain abundant fossil material of small and large bodied animals recruited from the local paleocommunity that can provide important information for reconstructing regional paleoecology. The Foremost Formation is the oldest unit of the Belly River Group, and records the transition from the fully marine shales of the Pakowki Formation to the non-marine strata of the relatively well-sampled Oldman and Dinosaur Park formations. Although the Foremost Formation has relatively limited exposure and vertebrate fossil material is not abundant, it does contain some important early records of major vertebrate clades from Laramidia (e.g. ceratopsids, pachycephalosaurids). Here we document a new microfossil locality from the upper part of the formation that shows a transitional assemblage containing an abundance of terrestrial forms such as dinosaurs and other sauropsids, while still showing considerable marine influence. The proportion of marine taxa at this site is reduced relative to most sites known from the Foremost Formation, though much higher than more terrestrial sites of the overlying Oldman Formation. In addition to filling a gap in our understanding of this paleoenvironmental transition, this new site preserves two particularly significant specimens: a large, complete, cephalic spine of the hybodont shark Hybodus, and jaw fragments from the ratfish Elasmodus. This represents the first known complete cephalic spine of a hybodont shark from the Cretaceous of Alberta. The ratfish jaw fragments represent the first published record of this group from the Foremost Formation, further increasing our knowledge of chondrichthyan diversity in the Western Interior Seaway. Comparisons of this site to other microsites from the Campanian of Alberta demonstrate the utility of certain key groups, such as lissamphibians and chondrichthyans, in determining paleoenvironments from Mesozoic and Cenozoic vertebrate microsite assemblage data

    ABSTRACT Radial velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to orbital velocity variations are presented for the ninth set of 10 close binary systems: V395 And, HS Aqr, V449 Aur, FP Boo, SW Lac, KS Peg, IW Per, V592 Per, TU UMi, and FO Vir. The first three are very close, possibly detached, early-type binaries, and all three require further investigation. Particularly interesting is V395 And, whose spectral type is as early as B7/8 for a 0.685 day orbit binary. KS Peg and IW Per are single-line binaries, with the former probably hosting a very low mass star. We have detected a low-mass secondary in an important semidetached system, FO Vir, at q ¼ 0:125 AE 0:005. The contact binary FP Boo is also a very small mass ratio system, q ¼ 0:106 AE 0:005. The other contact binaries in this group are V592 Per, TU UMi, and the wellknown SW Lac. V592 Per and TU UMi have bright tertiary companions; for these binaries, and for V395 And, we used a novel technique of arranging the broadening functions into a two-dimensional image in phase. The case of TU UMi turned out to be intractable even using this approach, and we have not been able to derive a firm radial velocity orbit for this binary.
