    Sedimentation of particulate matter in the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia : spatial and temporal patterns

    Suspended and sedimented particulate materials were assessed monthly at five sites on the south-west lagoon of New Caledonia, from May 1986 to April 1987. Sedimentation of particulate matter was measured using sediment traps for 24 h. Resuspension, which accounted for more than 80% of the total sedimentation, was distinguished to calculate net sedimentation values. The mean net sedimentation rate for the lagoon varied according to the site from 0.481 to 1.157 gC/m2/day with a general mean value of 0.756 gC/m2/day. An increasing gradient from the reef to the shore stations was observed for both suspended and sedimented particles. The standing stocks and the fluxes of suspended particles were maximal in February, during the warm season associated with maximal rainfall, and minimal in August. The high C/N ratio in sedimented material compared to suspended particles indicated that organic matter degradation had occurred preferentially in the water column. The mean particulate organic carbon flux was about twice the lagoon pelagic primary production ; sedimented plant material only accounted for a small part of the organic carbon flux. The major source of sedimented organic carbon was therefore allochthonous and derived both from the reef and the shore. The latter seemed to predominate.     A review of selected indicators of particle, nutrient and metal inputs in coral reef lagoon systems

    This review presents environmental and biological indicators of the impact of three major categories of inputs in coral reef lagoons i.e. particles, nutrients and metals. Information was synthesized to extract well established indicators together with some interesting new concepts currently under development, and to provide the reader with an assessment of their respective advantages and drawbacks. The paper has been organized according to the capacity of three categories of indicators to respond either in a specific or a non specific way to a given source of input. The first section focuses on abiotic indicators which main interest is to respond instantaneously and in a truly specific way to a given source of input. The second and third sections present informations on bioindicators either at the sub-individual level or at the individual to community level, indicator specificity generally decreasing as a direct function of biological or ecological complexity. This review showed that even though significant work has already been done on coral reef ecosystems, much more scientific studies are still needed to answer the growing local demands for simple and truly validated tools to be used in environmental surveys. It is further stressed that, due to the biological and environmental diversity of coral reef lagoons, a preliminary step of on-site validation must be considered as an absolute prerequisite when indicators are planned to be used in the frame of a local environmental monitoring programme

    Consumer acceptance of minced meat patties from boars in four European countries

    A consumer study was performed in four EU countries to further clarify the acceptability of meat with boar taint. In Denmark, France, Italy and Poland, a total of 476 female consumers evaluated 8 meat patties from boars with varying levels of skatole (0.10-0.40ÎŒg/g fat tissue) and androstenone (0.47-2.00 ÎŒg/g fat tissue), in a pair-wise comparison with patties from castrates. Boar meat patties were always less preferred than the castrate meat patties, regardless of the level of androstenone and skatole. Acceptability of the boar meat patties decreased with increasing skatole level. In samples with low skatole levels, higher levels of androstenone also reduced acceptability among androstenone sensitive consumers. No clear threshold levels for androstenone and skatole could be identified. Maps presenting the reduction in preference due to increasing levels of skatole and androstenone, and corrected for the general acceptance of the meat product were developed, taking into account androstenone sensitivity. Compared to these other mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus possesses many specific hallmark characteristics, and may thus provide different angles for research which ultimately leads to a practical solution for controlling the ever increasing burden of insect-vector-borne diseases around the globe.     Origine, transport et devenir des apports naturels et anthropiques dans le lagon sud-ouest de Nouvelle-Calédonie

    L’ird (Institut de recherche pour le dĂ©veloppement) conduit depuis dix ans un programme pluridisciplinaire sur les effets des apports naturels et anthropiques sur le fonctionnement du lagon de Nouvelle-CalĂ©donie. Celle-ci connaĂźt actuellement une croissance de sa population et un dĂ©veloppement de son industrie miniĂšre. Trois grands types d’apports sont pris en compte : les particules entraĂźnĂ©es par l’érosion des sols et des sous-sols et dont l'accumulation brutale peut ĂȘtre responsable du dĂ©pĂŽt de quantitĂ©s considĂ©rables de sĂ©diments, les mĂ©taux potentiellement toxiques pour les organismes vivant dans le lagon et les Ă©lĂ©ments nutritifs susceptibles de conduire les eaux jusqu'Ă  l’eutrophisation (confinement chimique conduisant Ă  l'Ă©limination de nombreuses espĂšces vivantes et Ă  la dominance d'un petit nombre d'autres). Le prĂ©sent article offre trois exemples de problĂ©matiques environnementales qui n'ont pu ĂȘtre rĂ©solues qu’au moyen de la fĂ©dĂ©ration de diffĂ©rentes approches de recherche complĂ©mentaires : l’influence des courants sur la dispersion des particules dĂ©tritiques en provenance de l'Ăźle, le devenir des mĂ©taux dans le lagon et leur accumulation dans les organismes, les effets des apports en nutriments sur les communautĂ©s planctoniques et les risques d'eutrophisation. Les rĂ©sultats de ces recherches sont prĂ©sentĂ©s tout en conservant Ă  l’esprit les objectifs nĂ©cessairement appliquĂ©s d’un programme de recherche pour le dĂ©veloppement. Il s’agit principalement de dĂ©finir les bases scientifiques permettant d’identifier certains outils de diagnostic environnemental et de dĂ©velopper des approches de simulation mathĂ©matique susceptibles d'offrir une vision synthĂ©tique et prĂ©visionnelle de l’état et du devenir des environnements lagonaires sous influence anthropique.For the past ten years, the ird (Institut de recherche pour le dĂ©veloppement) has developed a multidisciplinary programme dealing with the effects of natural and anthropogenic terrigenous inputs on the New Caledonia coral reef lagoon which is currently subjected to environmental pressure due to population increase and development of the mining industry. The ongoing study focused on three main categories of inputs: (i) particles generated by erosion processes and responsible for excessive sediment inputs in the lagoon, (ii) metals exhibiting a potentially lethal effect on the lagoon biota, (iii) nutrients responsible for eutrophication. This article presents three examples of environmental issues that could be addressed through complementary research approaches: (i) the dispersion of terrigenous inputs as commended by currents, (ii) the fate of metals in the lagoon and their accumulation in the biota, (iii) the effects of nutrient enrichment on pelagic communities. Results are presented while keeping in mind the necessary applied outcomes requested from a research programme devoted to development issues. Such outcomes are mainly related to the identification of suited environmental diagnostic tools and to the development of modelling approaches yielding synthetic and predictive information on the status and fate of coral reef lagoons subject to anthropogenic stress

    Chronic pain associated with the Chikungunya Fever: long lasting burden of an acute illness

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is responsible for major epidemics worldwide. Autochthonous cases were recently reported in several European countries. Acute infection is thought to be monophasic. However reports on chronic pain related to CHIKV infection have been made. In particular, the fact that many of these patients do not respond well to usual analgesics suggests that the nature of chronic pain may be not only nociceptive but also neuropathic. Neuropathic pain syndromes require specific treatment and the identification of neuropathic characteristics (NC) in a pain syndrome is a major step towards pain control.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We carried out a cross-sectional study at the end of the major two-wave outbreak lasting 17 months in Réunion Island. We assessed pain in 106 patients seeking general practitioners with confirmed infection with the CHIK virus, and evaluated its impact on quality of life (QoL).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean intensity of pain on the visual-analogical scale (VAS) was 5.8 ± 2.1, and its mean duration was 89 ± 2 days. Fifty-six patients fulfilled the definition of chronic pain. Pain had NC in 18.9% according to the DN4 questionnaire. Conversely, about two thirds (65%) of patients with NC had chronic pain. The average pain intensity was similar between patients with or without NC (6.0 ± 1.7 vs 6.1 ± 2.0). However, the total score of the Short Form-McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ)(15.5 ± 5.2 vs 11.6 ± 5.2; p < 0.01) and both the affective (18.8 ± 6.2 vs 13.4 ± 6.7; p < 0.01) and sensory subscores (34.3 ± 10.7 vs 25.0 ± 9.9; p < 0.01) were significantly higher in patients with NC. The mean pain interference in life activities calculated from the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) was significantly higher in patients with chronic pain than in patients without it (6.8 ± 1.9 vs 5.9 ± 1.9, p < 0.05). This score was also significantly higher in patients with NC than in those without such a feature (7.2 ± 1.5 vs 6.1 ± 1.9, p < 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>There exists a specific chronic pain condition associated to CHIKV. Pain with NC seems to be associated with more aggressive clinical picture, more intense impact in QoL and more challenging pharmacological treatment.</p

    Costs of insensitive acetylcholinesterase insecticide resistance for the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae homozygous for the G119S mutation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The G119S mutation responsible for insensitive acetylcholinesterase resistance to organophosphate and carbamate insecticides has recently been reported from natural populations of <it>Anopheles gambiae </it>in West Africa. These reports suggest there are costs of resistance associated with this mutation for <it>An. gambiae</it>, especially for homozygous individuals, and these costs could be influential in determining the frequency of carbamate resistance in these populations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Life-history traits of the AcerKis and Kisumu strains of <it>An. gambiae </it>were compared following the manipulation of larval food availability in three separate experiments conducted in an insecticide-free laboratory environment. These two strains share the same genetic background, but differ in being homozygous for the presence or absence of the G119S mutation at the <it>ace-1 </it>locus, respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Pupae of the resistant strain were significantly more likely to die during pupation than those of the susceptible strain. Ages at pupation were significantly earlier for the resistant strain and their dry starved weights were significantly lighter; this difference in weight remained when the two strains were matched for ages at pupation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The main cost of resistance found for <it>An. gambiae </it>mosquitoes homozygous for the G119S mutation was that they were significantly more likely to die during pupation than their susceptible counterparts, and they did so across a range of larval food conditions. Comparing the frequency of G119S in fourth instar larvae and adults emerging from the same populations would provide a way to test whether this cost of resistance is being expressed in natural populations of <it>An. gambiae </it>and influencing the dynamics of this resistance mutation.</p

    Analyse écorégionale marine de Nouvelle-Calédonie : atelier d'identification des aires de conservation prioritaires

    Dans le cadre de l'initiative pour les rĂ©cifs coralliens du Pacifique sud (CRISP), le WWF-France a souhaitĂ© dĂ©velopper un projet pour la protection des rĂ©cifs et des lagons nĂ©o-calĂ©doniens. L'atelier, qui s'est dĂ©roulĂ© les 10 et 11 aoĂ»t Ă  NoumĂ©a, avait pour objectif de rassembler les scientifiques et les experts du lagon nĂ©ocalĂ©donien pour identifier, sur la base de leur connaissance experte, les zones les plus remarquables du lagon (richesse, endĂ©misme, originalitĂ© des faunes et flores, espĂšces emblĂ©matiques, zones d'intĂ©rĂȘt fonctionnel) sur lesquelles doivent porter en prioritĂ© les efforts de conservation. Il a permis d'identifier 20 aires prioritaires pour la conservation, parmi lesquelles 6 ont un intĂ©rĂȘt mondial, 4 ont un intĂ©rĂȘt sur le plan rĂ©gional, les autres ayant un intĂ©rĂȘt local

    Chikungunya Virus Infection

    Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an alphavirus transmitted by mosquitoes, mostly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. After half a century of focal outbreaks of acute febrile polyarthralgia in Africa and Asia, the disease unexpectedly spread in the past decade with large outbreaks in Africa and around the Indian Ocean and rare autochthonous transmission in temperate areas. This emergence brought new insights on its pathogenesis, notably the role of the A226V mutation that improved CHIKV fitness in Ae. albopictus and the possible CHIKV persistence in deep tissue sanctuaries for months after infection. Massive outbreaks also revealed new aspects of the acute stage: the high number of symptomatic cases, unexpected complications, mother-to-child transmission, and low lethality in debilitated patients. The follow-up of patients in epidemic areas has identified frequent, long-lasting, rheumatic disorders, including rare inflammatory joint destruction, and common chronic mood changes associated with quality-of-life impairment. Thus, the globalization of CHIKV exposes countries with Aedes mosquitoes both to brutal outbreaks of acute incapacitating episodes and endemic long-lasting disorders
