Real-time capabilities of a digital analyzer for mixed-field assay using scintillation detectors
Scintillation detectors offer a single-step detection method for fast neutrons and necessitate real-time acquisition, whereas this is redundant in two-stage thermal detection systems using helium-3 and lithium-6, where the fast neutrons need to be thermalized prior to detection. The relative affordability of scintillation detectors and the associated fast digital acquisition systems have enabled entirely new measurement setups that can consist of sizeable detector arrays. These detectors in most cases rely on photomultiplier tubes, which have significant tolerances and result in variations in detector response functions. The detector tolerances and other environmental instabilities must be accounted for in measurements that depend on matched detector performance. This paper presents recent advances made to a high-speed FPGA-based digitizer. The technology described offers a complete solution for fast-neutron scintillation detectors by integrating multichannel high-speed data acquisition technology with dedicated detector high-voltage supplies. This configuration has significant advantages for large detector arrays that require uniform detector responses. We report on bespoke control software and firmware techniques that exploit real-time functionality to reduce setup and acquisition time, increase repeatability, and reduce statistical uncertainties
In the paper, the air flow process from the cold water surface onto the warm land surface was simulated. The comparisons of calculations with measurements were performed as well. The calculations show that the heat flux in the narrow coastal zone may be more than 20% higher than the values of heat fluxes calculated from the assumption of horizontal homogeneity of the surface layer. Thus, the horizontal inhomogeneity of the atmosphere must be taken into account in the calculation of the cooling water, the horizontal size of which has a scale of ~100 m

The COVID-19 Impact on Health Administration Education: Understanding Student Perspectives on the Transition from In-Person to Remote Course Instruction
COVID-19 has infected millions of Americans. To combat the spread of the virus, state and local officials instituted social distancing guidelines that forced schools to shutter campuses and transition from in-person to remote learning. In this study, we examined health administration (HA) student perspectives on the transition from in-person to remote learning. We sought to understand how schools attempted to manage student concerns, how adaptations to remote learning were implemented, and what influences the transition had on student stress and anxiety. We used a mixed-methods study design that included (1) a survey of undergraduate and graduate students from six geographically diverse HA programs, and (2) a focus group with 6–10 students from each program. Our survey response rate was 52% (n =215). We found that students experienced five phases following the transition: grief, loss of engagement, fatigue, coping, and resilience. Focus groups also revealed stress and anxiety, as well as communication from leaders, as important themes. We present integrated survey and focus group findings, and supplement with exemplary quotes where applicable. We conclude by discussing a number of insights provided by HA students that may help guide program leadership and HA faculty who are teaching future remote courses
Isoflavone metabolism in domestic cats (Felis catus): comparison of plasma metabolites detected after ingestion of two different dietary forms of genistein and daidzein
Some felid diets contain isoflavones but the metabolic capacity of cats toward isoflavones is relatively unknown, despite the understanding that isoflavones have divergent biological potential according to their metabolite end products. The objective of this study was to determine the plasma metabolites detectable in domestic cats after exposure to 2 different dietary forms of isoflavones, either as a soy extract tablet ( n = 6) or as part of a dietary matrix ( n = 4). Serial blood samples were collected after isoflavone exposure to identify the plasma metabolites of each cat. Genistein was detected in its unconjugated form or as a monosulfate. Daidzein was detected as both a mono- and disulfate as well as in its unconjugated form. Other daidzein metabolites detected included equol mono- and disulfate, dihydrodaidzein, and O -desmethylangolensin. No β -glucuronide metabolites of either isoflavone were detected. Equol was produced in markedly fewer cats after ingestion of a soy extract tablet as a single oral bolus compared with cats consuming an isoflavone-containing diet. The detectable metabolites of the isoflavones, genistein and daidzein, in domestic cat plasma after dietary ingestion has been described in the present study for the first time. The metabolic capacity for isoflavones by domestic cats appears to be efficient, with only minimal proportions of the ingested amount detected in their unconjugated forms. This has implications for the potential of isoflavones to exert physiological activity in the domestic cat when consumed at concentrations representative of typical dietary intake
Hyperbaric oxygen treatment in autism spectrum disorders
Traditionally, hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) is indicated in several clinical disorders include decompression sickness, healing of problem wounds and arterial gas embolism. However, some investigators have used HBOT to treat individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A number of individuals with ASD possess certain physiological abnormalities that HBOT might ameliorate, including cerebral hypoperfusion, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Studies of children with ASD have found positive changes in physiology and/or behavior from HBOT. For example, several studies have reported that HBOT improved cerebral perfusion, decreased markers of inflammation and did not worsen oxidative stress markers in children with ASD. Most studies of HBOT in children with ASD examined changes in behaviors and reported improvements in several behavioral domains although many of these studies were not controlled. Although the two trials employing a control group reported conflicting results, a recent systematic review noted several important distinctions between these trials. In the reviewed studies, HBOT had minimal adverse effects and was well tolerated. Studies which used a higher frequency of HBOT sessions (e.g., 10 sessions per week as opposed to 5 sessions per week) generally reported more significant improvements. Many of the studies had limitations which may have contributed to inconsistent findings across studies, including the use of many different standardized and non-standardized instruments, making it difficult to directly compare the results of studies or to know if there are specific areas of behavior in which HBOT is most effective. The variability in results between studies could also have been due to certain subgroups of children with ASD responding differently to HBOT. Most of the reviewed studies relied on changes in behavioral measurements, which may lag behind physiological changes. Additional studies enrolling children with ASD who have certain physiological abnormalities (such as inflammation, cerebral hypoperfusion, and mitochondrial dysfunction) and which measure changes in these physiological parameters would be helpful in further defining the effects of HBOT in ASD
Judging the impact of leadership-development activities on school practice
The nature and effectiveness of professional-development activities should be judged in a way that takes account of
both the achievement of intended outcomes and the unintended consequences that may result. Our research project set out to create a robust approach that school staff members could use to assess the impact of
professional-development programs on leadership and management practice without being constrained in this judgment by the stated aims of the program. In the process,
we identified a number of factors and requirements relevant to a wider audience than that concerned with the development of leadership and management in England.
Such an assessment has to rest upon a clear understanding of educational leadership,a clearly articulated model of practice, and a clear model of potential forms of impact.
Such foundations, suitably adapted to the subject being addressed, are appropriate for assessing all teacher professional development
