Natriuretic Peptides Synthesis and Secretion Profiles during the Evolution of Cardiac Hypertrophy in DOCA-Salt Hypertensive Rats
The interactions between pressure and volume overload that occur in hypertension lead to different patterns of cardiac hypertrophy and to increase in natriuretic peptides (NPs). The profiles of ANP and BNP synthesis and secretion have been investigated in models of hypertension; however, the different evolution of these profiles during the acute and chronic periods of pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy is still unknown. For this reason, we studied DOCA-salt treated Sprague-Dawley rats at weeks 2, 4, 6 and 12 and correlated the evolution of these profiles with cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension.
Cardiac hypertrophy had a positive correlation with ANP expression in the left ventricle and with ANP plasma levels. BNP expression increased after 4 weeks of treatment while ANP increased significantly after 6 weeks. In addition, BNP plasma levels increased only in the group treated for 12 weeks, while ANP plasma levels increased from week 2. NP secretion has a differential response in the early stages of the development of cardiac hypertrophy induced by the DOCA-salt model, with an early increase in ANP. As ANP levels were exceeded to those of BNP in all the DOCA-salt groups, ANP might be considered a more specific marker of volume overloadFil: Cerrudo, Carolina Susana. Universidad de Buenos Aires. The Role of HE4 in Ovarian Cancer Follow-up: A Review.
Objective: The aim of this review was to analyze the state of the art about HE4 and follow-up in patients treated for ovarian cancer. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE database using the key words "HE4" and "ovarian cancer" and "recurrence" or "relapse" or "follow up." Results: Seven of 28 clinical studies were selected. Four studies were prospective, and all of them were based on a small number of patients (8Y73 women). A failure of HE4 levels to normalize at completion of standard therapy may indicate a poor prognosis, thus suggesting the need of a closer follow-up. Moreover, HE4 showed better sensibility and specificity in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer recurrence with respect to CA-125, being also an earlier indicator of the relapse with a lead time of 5 to 8 months. HE4 showed a better performance in this setting if performed in association with other markers (CA-125, CA-72.4). HE4 seems to be an independent predictive factor for the surgical outcome at secondary cytoreductive surgery and to maintain its prognostic role even after the recurrence. Conclusions: These preliminary data start to suggest a superiority of HE4 over CA-125 in the detection of ovarian cancer recurrence. Moreover, the prognostic role of HE4 could help clinicians to personalize the follow-up program, whereas its predictive role could be useful to plan the treatment of the relapse. The role of HE4 in ovarian cancer follow-up deserves to be further investigated in prospective randomized multicentric studies
Sarcoptic Mange in Wild Caprinae of the Alps: Could Pathology Help in Filling the Gaps in Knowledge?
Sarcoptic mange represents the most severe disease for wild Caprinae individuals and populations in Europe, rising concerns for both conservation and management of these ungulates. To date, this disease has been investigated in different wild caprine species and under many different perspectives including diagnostics, epidemiology, impact on the host populations and genetics of both hosts and parasite, with the aim to disentangle the host-Sarcoptes scabiei relationship. Notwithstanding, uncertainty still remains and basic questions still need an answer. Among these, the effect of immunological responses on mange severity at an individual level, the main drivers in host-parasite interactions for different clinical outcomes and the role of the immune response in determining the shift from epidemic to endemic cycle. A deeper approach to pathology of this disease seems therefore advisable, all the more reason considering that immune response to S. scabiei in wild Caprinae, generally classified as a hypersensitivity, still remains poorly understood. In this paper, we started a journey into the pathological features associated to sarcoptic mange in wildlife, exploring different kinds of hypersensitivity and outcomes, with the final goal to highlight the major drivers in the different responses to this disease at an individual level and propose some key topics for future research, with a particular attention to Alps-dwelling wild caprines
Test of the photon detection system for the LHCb RICH Upgrade in a charged particle beam
The LHCb detector will be upgraded to make more efficient use of the
available luminosity at the LHC in Run III and extend its potential for
discovery. The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors are key components of the LHCb
detector for particle identification. In this paper we describe the setup and
the results of tests in a charged particle beam, carried out to assess
prototypes of the upgraded opto-electronic chain from the Multi-Anode PMT
photosensor to the readout and data acquisition system.Comment: 25 pages, 22 figure
Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the baryon
A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 3 fb collected by LHCb at and 8 TeV, is used
to reconstruct , decays. Using the , decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute
lifetime of the baryon are measured to be \begin{align*}
\frac{\tau_{\Omega_b^-}}{\tau_{\Xi_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\
\tau_{\Omega_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the
uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for
only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference,
, and the corresponding mass, which
yields \begin{align*} m_{\Omega_b^-}-m_{\Xi_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm
MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{\Omega_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2.
\end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, All figures and tables, along with any
