Social preferences for ecosystem services in a biodiversity hotspot in South America

Identifying which ecosystem services are relevant to different stakeholders and understanding stakeholders’ perceptions of such services is useful for making informed decisions, especially in regions of the world where the achievement of biodiversity conservation goals is threatened by economically productive activities. In this article, we assess social preferences for ecosystem services in a biodiversity hotspot in central Chile. We use a consultative case study to ask local stakeholders (n = 70) from the Campana Peñuelas Biosphere Reserve to identify the most important ecosystem services the area provides for them and inquire about the perceived vulnerability of the services to changes in the future. We also explore the association between the perceived importance of ecosystem services and the sociodemographic and cultural characteristics of the respondents, which allows us to identify contrasting stakeholder perceptions of different ecosystem services. The most important services for local actors were the drinking water, fresh air and climate change control, genetic pool of plant communities in central Chile, and educational value. From the perspective of local actors, the services that could be threatened by negative changes in the future in terms of their provision included the possibilities of developing conservation activities focused on iconic threatened animal and plant species, water regulation, food from agriculture, and drinking water. Contrasting perceptions about the importance of ecosystem services emerged among stakeholders. While small farmers and members of local organizations attributed higher importance values to provisioning services, scientists and rangers and administrators of protected areas as well as teachers, NGO members and local government employees attributed more importance to the regulating and cultural services associated with threatened species. Our results can serve as a source of information for the planning and decision-making processes related to the search for socially and ecologically sustainable solutions for land use managemen

The flow impact on a radiator system.

    Get PDF
The primary goal of this Master thesis is to compare the flow impact on a radiator system. It is going to compare the energy savings between using traditional high flow and low flow method. For this, it is necessary to calculate, compare and choose the best option. This means, calculate the system efficiency with different flows and proving which is more economical. The flow is adjusted by pressurized valves in the supply pipes. For that resolution, software TVAROR is used.<br /

Comparative effectiveness of tele-monitoring of pacemaker versus conventional modality: quality of life at the 6 months of follow-up

Cartel presentado en la Segunda Conferencia Internacional de Comunicación en Salud, celebrada el 23 de octubre de 2015 en la Universidad Carlos III de MadridBackground: The use of tele-monitoring (TM) of pacemakers (PM) is limited, and very few studies have focused on their comparative effectiveness. Objectives: Evaluate the effectiveness of TM of PM in comparison with the monitoring performed in hospital (HM). Methods: Controlled, not randomized nor masked clinical trial, with collecting data pre and post-implantation and a follow-up of 6 months. All patients over 18 who were implanted a PM in the study period were selected (n=83), being assigned either to TM (n=30) or to HM (n=53) group. Baseline characteristics and number of visits to the hospital were analysed, and the questionnaires administrated were EuroQol-5D (EQ5D) to evaluate the health-related quality of life and Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) to assess the functional capacity. Results: Groups were similar in baseline characteristics, including EQ5D (TM:0,7299; HM:0,6769) and DASI (TM:21,41; HM:19,99). At 6 months, EQ5D was improved in both groups (EQ5D TM:0,8613; HM:0,8175; p=0,439) still without differences between them. DASI score was similar to baseline. Significant differences were found in number of follow-up transmissions/visits per patient, being lower for TM group (1.57 vs. 1.96; relative reduction 31%; p=0.015). Conclusions: Although tele-monitoring of pacemakers shows a similar effectiveness and safety, it significantly reduces the number of follow-up visits regarding hospital monitoring. This study has been financially supported by the NILS Science and sustainability Program under the European Economic Area Grants

The Potential of Specialized Media in Public Health: Analysis of Health-Related Content in Sports Newspapers

This article belongs to the Collection Physical Activity and Public HealthSports-specialized newspapers are one of the print media with the highest number of readers in Spain. However, little is known about the health coverage in this type of print press. The aim of the study was to analyze any health-related material in sports newspaper coverage and describe the main characteristics. This is an observational and cross-sectional study, performed in relation to the three most read daily Spanish sports newspapers (MARCA, AS, SPORT). A descriptive analysis was conducted to assess the health-related materials selected after a careful search over a period of 30 days. During this time, a total of 815 units of analysis were identified. On average, 14.79% (n = 645 pages) of the full content (n = 4362) included health-related material. The Liga BBVA section was the most frequent to contain health-related content by a significant margin (p = 0.01). The main covered topics were injuries to soccer players (52%), doping (21%), and other diseases in athletes or their relatives (8.6%) with no significant differences (p = 0.10). Photographs (87.4%) were the most frequent visual material used in the health content, followed by infographics (12.6%). Press releases were the most frequent source of information (58%). Spanish sports newspapers include a high proportion of health-related material, especially in terms of providing detailed descriptions of athletes' sport injuries, mainly related to soccer. This publication was partially supported by the General Secretariat for Research, Development and Innovation, Regional Government of Andalusia (Spain), under Grant PI/0256/2017. Data on samara morphology and wind dispersal in the invasive tree Ailanthus altissima

    Get PDF
The data presented in this paper is supporting the research article “Estimating wind dispersal potential in Ailanthus altissima: The need to consider the three-dimensional structure of samaras” [1]. We analyzed the estimation of samara's wind dispersal potential through a group of morphological variables that succeed in describing the three-dimensional nature of samaras. We present here a dataset containing 8 morphological variables of 200 samaras belonging to 5 different individuals of the invasive tree Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle. Additionally, we present the average descent velocity of each of the samaras, which was recorded by releasing 5 times each samara under controlled and reproducible conditions. The data set is structured in a single spreadsheet where we also included the samara and the individual identity code of the tree

Changes in the juvenile fish assemblage of a Mediterranean shallow Posidonia oceanica seagrass nursery area after half a century

The within-year dynamics of the juvenile fish community in a shallow seagrass-dominated nursery habitat (Posidonia oceanica) in a Mediterranean bay were compared between two surveys separated by 50 years (1960 and 2012-2013). A nocturnal survey over depths ranging from 2 to 10 m over patchy seagrass meadows was conducted for one year (2012-2013) through 72 epibenthic tows spread fortnightly in 4 nearby stations, mimicking a survey conducted in 1960 in terms of sampling intensity, sampling zone, temporal coverage and sampling gear. Although a large proportion of the fish species were similar among surveys, remarkable and statistically significant differences were detected. A striking feature was that one of the most common and abundant Sparidae species currently, Diplodus annularis, did not appear in 1960. Other strong differences included the nonappearance of the European eel Anguilla anguilla in the recent survey. Furthermore, one of the most valuable species for artisanal fisheries in the area, the black scorpionfish Scorpaena porcus, was almost 10 times less abundant in 1960. A finer-scale study of the 2012-2013 survey allowed a quantitative analysis between species composition and potential environmental drivers through redundancy analysis that well described the current pattern of time-dependent recruitment pulses in nearshore meadows of the area throughout the year, with marked effects of surface temperature and photoperiod. The comparison between surveys suggests that some major differences between surveys are not likely to be attributable to interannual stochasticity in recruitment or environmental variability but may be related to i) unaccounted-for habitat transformation and/or ii) the strong decrease in juvenile fishing mortality in this shallow nursery area since the enforcement of bans on littoral epibenthic trawling activities characteristic of this area
