Analysis of antenal sensilla patterns of Rhodnius prolixus from Colombia and Venezuela

Antennal sensilla patterns were used to analyze population variation of domestic Rhodnius prolixus from six departments and states representing three biogeographical regions of Colombia and Venezuela. Discriminant analysis of the patterns of mechanoreceptors and of three types of chemoreceptors on the pedicel and flagellar segments showed clear differentiation between R. prolixus populations east and west of the Andean Cordillera. The distribution of thick and thin-walled trichoids on the second flagellar segment also showed correlation with latitude, but this was not seen in the patterns of other sensilla. The results of the sensilla patterns appear to be reflecting biogeographic features or population isolation rather than characters associated with different habitats and lend support to the idea that domestic R. prolixus originated in the eastern region of the Andes.Fil: Esteban, Lyda. Additionally, a second aim of this study is to analyze the psychometric properties of an adapted version of ACSQ designed to assess perception of effectiveness. The results of CFA provided a satisfactory fit for both models ACSQ-use and ACSQ-effectiveness, showing better indexes for effectiveness model (x2/df = 2.57; CFI = .913; TLI = .904; RMSEA = .058). Moreover, the relations between ACSQ-use, ACSQ-effectiveness and the external variables (anxiety and self-confidence) show the different roles of both criteria, and the need, therefore, of contemplate both indicators in the assessment of coping in spor

Native vs photoinduced chemiluminescence in dimethoate determination

The determination of dimethoate using either its native chemiluminescent (CL) properties or its photoinduced chemiluminescence obtained by irradiation with a 15W low-pressure mercury lamp was studied. Thereby, two flow injection systems (FIA) with and without irradiation were exhaustively optimized and their analytical characteristics studied. Better sensitivity and selectivity was found in absence of irradiation, due to the enhancing effect of hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HPC), which acted as a sensitizer. In the developed FIA-CL system, the alkaline hydrolysis of dimethoate with NaOH was performed on-line in presence of HPC. The oxidation of the product of hydrolysis with Ce(IV) in hydrochloric medium induced chemiluminescence. The method provided a limit of detection of only 0.05ngmL -1 without any pre-treatment. However, the combination with solid phase extraction allowed the removal of some potential interferents as well as the preconcentration of the pesticide. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied to natural waters with recoveries between 95 and 108%. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.This work was supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain (Project CTM2006-11991) and FEDER funds.Catalá Icardo, M.; López Paz, JL.; Choves Barón, C.; Pena Badena, A. The DNA methylome of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) reflects intrinsic and extrinsic factors in intestinal mucosal cells

Abnormal DNA methylation has been described in human inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As other complex diseases, IBD results from the balance between genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. As such, DNA methylation may be the consequence (and potential effector) of both, genetic susceptibility variants and/or environmental signals such as cytokine exposure. We attempted to discern between these two non-excluding possibilities by performing a combined analysis of published DNA methylation data in intestinal mucosal cells of IBD and control samples. We identified abnormal DNA methylation at different levels: deviation from mean methylation signals at site and region levels, and differential variability. A fraction of such changes is associated with genetic polymorphisms linked to IBD susceptibility. In addition, by comparing with another intestinal inflammatory condition (i.e., coeliac disease) we propose that aberrant DNA methylation can also be the result of unspecific processes such as chronic inflammation. Our characterization suggests that IBD methylomes combine intrinsic and extrinsic responses in intestinal mucosal cells, and could point to knowledge-based biomarkers of IBD detection and progression. This work was supported by the Agence Nationale de Recherches sur le SIDA et les Hépatites Virales [ANRS, Reference No. ECTZ47287 and ECTZ50137]; Institut National du Cancer (FR) [PLBIO 2017] (project: T cell tolerance to microbiota and colorectal cancers), and Ligue Contre le Cancer (FR) [AAP 2018]; NF is partially funded by the Basque Department of Health [project 2018/111086]
