    Promoting the mental health, wellbeing, and resilience of postgraduate researchers: An institutional perspective

    The mental health and wellbeing of postgraduate researchers (PGRs) is a priority in the UK, with a recent increase in research interest. A review of existing literature revealed various multi- faceted factors underpinning the issue. This literature review also identified multiple survey- based studies which reported diverse prevalence rates. Several small-scale interventions promoting positive mental health have been conducted within universities nationally. However, these interventions tend not to be grounded in psychological theory, seldom involve students in their production, and often lack comprehensive mixed methods evaluation, leading to varying success. Therefore, there remains a need for evidence-based, co-produced interventions for PGR mental health and wellbeing. A multi-phase study was conducted at a single post-92 university in South England between 2018-2021. This mixed methods research was a collaborative, iterative, and dynamic process, with student engagement throughout. In the first phase, PGRs from the institution participated in an online survey and follow-up interviews, exploring the factors that affect their mental health, producing an evidence base. The findings highlighted that PGRs had significantly lower wellbeing and resilience in comparison to general population averages. Qualitative analysis identified three key themes underpinning this: Control, Balance, and Coping. Based on these findings, three discrete four–six-week online pilot interventions were co-created with PGR focus groups: project planning, mindfulness, and mentoring. A fourth intervention was embedded across campus within the existing virtual learning environment (VLE), creating a peer support area. These interventions aimed to promote mental health, wellbeing, and resilience through increasing adaptive coping. The final phase of the project involved implementing and evaluating these interventions within a feasibility study. This thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge by furthering the understanding of the specific experiences of PGRs studying in the UK and how these interact with mental health, wellbeing, and resilience. By disseminating the challenges, limitations, and feasibility of four co- produced novel interventions, this thesis provides evidence to support the development of larger-scale interventions to promote positive mental health in PGRs nationally. It also provides considerations and recommendations for supervisors, doctoral schools, and universities to support mentally healthy and successful postgraduate research communities within UK higher education and beyond

    Postgraduate researchers ’ experiences of accessing participants via gatekeepers : ‘ wading through treacle !’

    ABSTRACT Research exploring both the general experiences of postgraduate research students when interacting with gatekeepers and how this affects their progress and emotional resilience is currently lacking. Consequently, this study aims to explore the experience of postgraduate researchers interact- ing with gatekeepers to develop an understanding of both the challenges and enablers. A mixed-methods online questionnaire was distributed inter- nationally to postgraduate researchers. N = 66 questionnaires were returned. Analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data highlighted that postgraduate researchers face a range of challenges when using gate- keepers to access participants for studies, and that there is a negative emotional impact arising when challenges are faced. Thematic analysis revealed six themes: Access to participants; Relationships; Perceptions of research; Context for gatekeepers, Emotional impact, and Mechanisms to address challenges. The study has highlighted a gap in the literature con- cerning the number of students who experience issues with gatekeepers, and how this affects their ability to undertake their research, their emotional resilience, and their access to support. Postgraduate researchers utilised a number of supportive mechanisms including seeking advice, reflective practice, and persistence to help them overcome challenges faced.     Feasibility study of a menstrual health behaviour change intervention for women and girls with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers for Vanuatu's humanitarian responses

    The Veivanua campaign is a menstrual health intervention for people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers in Vanuatu's humanitarian setting. The campaign was adapted from the Bishesta campaign delivered in Nepal's development setting. This feasibility study is designed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the Veivanua campaign to understand if efficacy testing is warranted. The Veivanua campaign was delivered to a preselected group of 30 young people (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and 35 caregivers (males and females). Data were collected through several qualitative tools to allow for methods triangulation: process monitoring, post-intervention in-depth interviews with caregivers and nine young people, observation of young persons, photovoice and ranking with two young people, campaign resource ranking, and key informant interviews with staff involved in the intervention. Data were analysed thematically using Nvivo 12. Results show that the Veivanua campaign is feasible. Male and female caregivers reported an increased ability to support young people's menstrual health and greater preparedness for the next emergency. Young people understood the training and applied their learning. Key informants want to scale up the intervention in their humanitarian responses. Several changes were made to the adapted campaign, but similar outcomes were recorded in Nepal and Vanuatu. All target behaviours improved, and campaign resources were used, but many caregivers found the menstrual calendar confusing. The intervention was not delivered with fidelity but responded to the context. The campaign cost more than the Bishesta campaign because procurement was more expensive in Vanuatu. In conclusion, this is the first intervention globally, so it begins to fill a substantial gap, but more must be done. As the Veivanua campaign is feasible, it requires efficacy testing in Vanuatu. It should also be adapted to humanitarian crises in other countries to support the menstrual health of this previously excluded population

    Qualitative pilot interventions for the enhancement of mental health support in doctoral students

    Doctoral degrees include Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and other professional doctorates such as Engineering Doctorate (EngD), Doctor of Education (EdD), or Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy). Unlike undergraduate- or postgraduate-taught students, doctoral study focuses on a single, autonomous piece of research. Research indicates a high occurrence of mental health problems in doctoral students. This paper describes the piloting and qualitative evaluation of a range of interventions designed to enhance the mental health support for doctoral students at one UK university. These interventions sought to target an array of known factors that affect the mental health of doctoral students, including individual capacity for coping with stress and social support availability

    Delineating reef fish trophic guilds with global gut content data synthesis and phylogeny

    Understanding species' roles in food webs requires an accurate assessment of their trophic niche. However, it is challenging to delineate potential trophic interactions across an ecosystem, and a paucity of empirical information often leads to inconsistent definitions of trophic guilds based on expert opinion, especially when applied to hyperdiverse ecosystems. Using coral reef fishes as a model group, we show that experts disagree on the assignment of broad trophic guilds for more than 20% of species, which hampers comparability across studies. Here, we propose a quantitative, unbiased, and reproducible approach to define trophic guilds and apply recent advances in machine learning to predict probabilities of pairwise trophic interactions with high accuracy. We synthesize data from community-wide gut content analyses of tropical coral reef fishes worldwide, resulting in diet information from 13,961 individuals belonging to 615 reef fish. We then use network analysis to identify 8 trophic guilds and Bayesian phylogenetic modeling to show that trophic guilds can be predicted based on phylogeny and maximum body size. Finally, we use machine learning to test whether pairwise trophic interactions can be predicted with accuracy. Our models achieved a misclassification error of less than 5%, indicating that our approach results in a quantitative and reproducible trophic categorization scheme, as well as high-resolution probabilities of trophic interactions. By applying our framework to the most diverse vertebrate consumer group, we show that it can be applied to other organismal groups to advance reproducibility in trait-based ecology. Our work thus provides a viable approach to account for the complexity of predator-prey interactions in highly diverse ecosystems.Peer reviewe

    Emotion regulation in children (ERiC): A protocol for a randomised clinical trial to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of mentalization based treatment (MBT) vs treatment as usual for school-age children with mixed emotional and behavioural difficulties

    Background: The majority of children referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in the UK will present with mixed emotional and behavioural difficulties, but most mental health treatments are developed for single disorders. There is a need for research on treatments that are helpful for these mixed difficulties, especially for school-age children. Emotion Regulation (ER) difficulties present across a wide range of mental health disorders and mentalizing may help with regulation. The ability to mentalize one’s own experiences and those of others plays a key role in coping with stress, regulation of emotions, and the formation of stable relationships. Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) is a well-evidenced therapy that aims to promote mentalization, which in turn increases ER capacities, leading to decreased emotional and behavioural difficulties. The aim of this study is to test the clinical- and cost-effectiveness of MBT compared to treatment as usual for school age children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. If effective, we hope this approach can become available to the growing number of children presenting to mental health services with a mix of emotional and behavioural difficulties. Materials and methods: Children referred to CAMHS aged 6–12 with mixed mental health problems (emotional and behavioural) as primary problem can take part with their parent/carers. Children will be randomly allocated to receive either MBT or treatment as usual (TAU) within the CAMHS clinic they have been referred to. MBT will be 6–8 sessions offered fortnightly and can flexibly include different family members. TAU is likely to include CBT, parenting groups, and/or children’s social skills groups. Parent/carers and children will be asked to complete outcome assessments (questionnaires and tasks) online at the start of treatment, mid treatment (8 weeks), end of treatment (16 weeks) and at follow up (40 weeks)

Methods : 327 hospitalised participants, with SARS-CoV-2 infection were recruited into a prospective multicentre cohort study at least 3 months post-discharge. The primary outcome was self-reported recovery at least ninety days after initial Covid-19 symptom onset. Secondary outcomes included new symptoms, disability (Washington group short scale), breathlessness (MRC Dyspnoea scale) and quality of life (EQ5D-5L). Findings : 55% of participants reported not feeling fully recovered. 93% reported persistent symptoms, with fatigue the most common (83%), followed by breathlessness (54%). 47% reported an increase in MRC dyspnoea scale of at least one grade. New or worse disability was reported by 24% of participants. The EQ5D-5L summary index was significantly worse following acute illness (median difference 0.1 points on a scale of 0 to 1, IQR: -0.2 to 0.0). Females under the age of 50 years were five times less likely to report feeling recovered (adjusted OR 5.09, 95% CI 1.64 to 15.74), were more likely to have greater disability (adjusted OR 4.22, 95% CI 1.12 to 15.94), twice as likely to report worse fatigue (adjusted OR 2.06, 95% CI 0.81 to 3.31) and seven times more likely to become more breathless (adjusted OR 7.15, 95% CI 2.24 to 22.83) than men of the same age. Interpretation : Survivors of Covid-19 experienced long-term symptoms, new disability, increased breathlessness, and reduced quality of life. These findings were present in young, previously healthy working age adults, and were most common in younger females.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Quantifying sources of variability in infancy research using the infant-directed-speech preference

    Psychological scientists have become increasingly concerned with issues related to methodology and replicability, and infancy researchers in particular face specific challenges related to replicability: For example, high-powered studies are difficult to conduct, testing conditions vary across labs, and different labs have access to different infant populations. Addressing these concerns, we report on a large-scale, multisite study aimed at (a) assessing the overall replicability of a single theoretically important phenomenon and (b) examining methodological, cultural, and developmental moderators. We focus on infants’ preference for infant-directed speech (IDS) over adult-directed speech (ADS). Stimuli of mothers speaking to their infants and to an adult in North American English were created using seminaturalistic laboratory-based audio recordings. Infants’ relative preference for IDS and ADS was assessed across 67 laboratories in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia using the three common methods for measuring infants’ discrimination (head-turn preference, central fixation, and eye tracking). The overall meta-analytic effect size (Cohen’s d) was 0.35, 95% confidence interval = [0.29, 0.42], which was reliably above zero but smaller than the meta-analytic mean computed from previous literature (0.67). The IDS preference was significantly stronger in older children, in those children for whom the stimuli matched their native language and dialect, and in data from labs using the head-turn preference procedure. Together, these findings replicate the IDS preference but suggest that its magnitude is modulated by development, native-language experience, and testing procedure.
