Sediment dynamics is a complex subject, playing an important role in coastal areas. The interaction between the wave action and sediment particles is determinant to understand sediment transport. The knowledge of sediment transport in sand mixtures is relevant as the coastal zone usually presents large heterogeneities of sediment particles sizes in the horizontal and vertical directions, which denote the existence of selective transport process. The goal of the present study was to understand selective sand transport mechanisms associated with wave-dominated conditions. To achieve the proposed objective, the work was supported by several approaches to give insights into the processes associated with heterometric sediment transport. The first approach consisted in a review of the literature to understand what is known and the lack of knowledge in the subject. The second approach consisted in performing a set of experiments with fluorescent sand tracers in natural conditions, at the field, and in a controlled environment, at the laboratory. The experiment conducted at Patos beach, Spain, aimed to observe the behavior of the native sand in the natural environment. The one performed at a large wave flume (Großer Wellenkanal, GWK) in Hannover, considered distinct sediment mixtures under two wave conditions. In both, measurements of the total and fractional transport were made. Finally, a quasi-steady and a semi-unsteady model were considered to calculate the net sediment transport of a large data set, for uniform and graded sand, allowing to identify limitations of the models and to propose new methodologies to obtain more adequate results. The experimental results obtained in the field allowed to observe the tracer transport towards the beach, in the wave direction, and to characterize the transport of the different fractions of the tracer in terms of the hydrodynamic processes. The laboratory experiment allowed to verify the occurrence of interaction between the sand fractions, with the finer (coarser) sediment decreasing (increasing) their transport, as the percentage of coarse sand in the bed mixture increases. The validation of the models was conducted and their performance was improved with the introduction of parameters related to surface wave streaming effects and bedforms.

This article has the main objective to comprehend how series are being consumed, especially House of Cards, considering the new possibilities brought by digital convergence and the spectators’ consumption. The hypothesis raised in here is the changes series are being submitted to due to new technologies in order to have more interaction with its audience. The methodology is based on the theoretical reflections of Jenkins (2008), as the Convergence Culture, Transmedia and Participatory Culture. There are also questions related to identity in the digital context, with analysis of the concepts from Santaella (2002) and Silva (2014). Thus, the final consideration show the strategy of transmedia narrative of series, mainly of House of Cards, that connects its audience and creates a closer bond with the series, making the fictional world closer and more palpable

[EN] The aim of this work was to investigate the effectiveness of physical therapy for the treatment of low back pain (LBP) and pelvic girdle pain (PGP) related to pregnancy after delivery. A systematic review of studies published since 1985 in the databases Medline, PEDro, SciELO, SCOPUS, LILACS, and the Cochrane Library was made. Studies that focused on postpartum LBP or PGP, without being related to pregnancy or in other non-pregnant patients, were excluded, as were papers addressing LBP or PGP indicating radiculopathy, rheumatism, or any other serious disease or pathologic condition. In accordance with the exclusion criteria and duplicate articles, of the 105 articles retrieved only six were considered for quality assessment with the PEDro Scale. Among these six papers, two were follow-ups, such that only four trials were included in this review. All trials used exercise for motor control and stability of the lumbopelvic region, but with different intervention approaches. The study affording the best evidence used individual guidance and adjustments given by the physiotherapists. Nevertheless, this systematic review was inconclusive and showed that more randomized clinical trials, with good quality, are needed

Keeping the body hydrated is one of the factors that contribute to organic and functional laryngeal health, especially for professional voice users. Hydration is considered an important factor for the prevention and treatment of dysphonias. There is no objective evaluation that quantifies water present in the vocal fold tissue. AIM: To evaluate changes in vocal folds investigated through videokymography after internal and external hydration of voice professionals. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical prospective. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We assessed six male professional voice users after leaving the workplace (six hours) and without having drunk water for the past four hours. We conducted ENT evaluation, comprising the first laryngeal assessment with laryngoscopy with and without stroboscopic and videokymography. These people were submitted to external and internal laryngeal hydration. They drank two glasses of hydrating solution with electrolytes, Passion Fruit Flavor (total of 300 ml), at room temperature, and external hydration with inhalation of saline solution at 0.9% during 10 minutes. Using videokymography we evaluated the time of open and closed phases during phonation, defining a quotient between these two parameters. RESULTS: We found five subjects with reduced or increased quotient. CONCLUSION: Videokymography was able to detect differences at the vibrating characteristics of vocal folds before and after hydration.

Social Media Advertising: Factors Influencing Consumer Ad Avoidance

    Get PDF
Social media has become a key field for expansion of advertising. However, despite the enthusiasm of both advertisers and technology providers, intense advertising on social media may result in companies’ messages being lost amongst the ‘noise’. This has led advertisers to create more daring adverts in order to stand out. However, such ‘controversial’ adverts may, subsequently, turn consumers off, leading consumers to avoid ads. This study examines potential factors influencing consumers’ decisions to avoid controversial ads on social media. Using data on social media usage from 273 consumers, a conceptual model of social media ad avoidance antecedents was tested via structural equation modelling. The results show that perceptions of adverts as controversial result in ad avoidance, but this effect is moderated by individual factors, such as ethical judgement. These results reveal noteworthy insights that have significant theoretical and practical implications for researchers in the area, and social media marketers alike

Airway obstruction produces widespread sympathoexcitation: role of hypoxia, carotid chemoreceptors, and NTS neurotransmission

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common respiratory disturbance of sleep and is closely associated to cardiovascular diseases. In humans, apnea increases respiratory effort and elevates muscle sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), but the primary stimulus for the SNA activation has not been identified. We recently developed a model of apnea in rodents using acute airway obstruction. In this study, we employed this model to test whether the elevation in SNA was mediated by hypoxia, carotid chemoreceptors, or neurotransmission in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). In anesthetized, male Sprague-Dawley rats, airway obstruction (20s) increased phrenic nerve activity (PNA), arterial blood pressure (ABP), and lumbar, renal, and splanchnic SNA. The changes in SNA were similar across all three sympathetic nerves. Inactivation of chemoreceptors by hyperoxia (100% O-2) or surgical denervation of carotid chemoreceptors attenuated, but did not eliminate, the changes in SNA and ABP produced by airway obstruction. To interrupt afferent information from carotid chemoreceptor and extracarotid afferents to the hindbrain, airway obstruction was performed before and after NTS microinjection of the GABA(A) agonist muscimol or a cocktail of NMDA and non-NMDA antagonists. Inhibition of NTS neurons or blockade of glutamatergic receptors attenuated the increase in lumbar SNA, splanchnic SNA, renal SNA, and PNA. Collectively, these findings suggest that PNA and SNA responses induced by airway obstruction depend, in part, on chemoreceptors afferents and glutamatergic neurotransmission in the NTS.National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute GrantAmerican Heart Association Established Investigator AwardCoordination of Training of Higher Education Graduate Foundation (CAPES)National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)Univ Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Physiol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Pittsburgh, Sch Med, Dept Med, Div Renal Electrolyte, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 USAUniv Pittsburgh, Sch Med, Hypertens Ctr, Pittsburgh, PA USAUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Physiol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilNational Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Grant: R01 HL113270Web of Scienc

Food waste biorefinery advocating circular economy : bioethanol and distilled beverage from sweet potato

    Get PDF
The exponential growth rate of the global population has been causing a threat to finite resources and also increasing the amount of waste generated. The global quantitative food waste for tubers is 45% per year, which in Brazil would amount to 350,000 tons of sweet potato wasted annually. Food waste causes 10% of the emissions of greenhouse gases. In this work, food waste biorefineries are the proposed solution. Integrated processing via a combination of different technologies to produce both ethanol and distilled beverage was evaluated to valorize sweet potato waste profitably within the circular economy concept. No works concerning the integrated production of both products simulating different real market scenarios were found. Five different scenarios varying the production percentage of each product were evaluated. The higher the production of the distilled beverage, the more profitable the scenarios are. Economic results began to be positive when the production for sale of each product reaches 40%, plus 20% of ethanol for domestic consumption. The scenario with 80% of beverage production presented NPV of US$ 1,078,500.18, IRR of 51%, and discounted payback of 1.06 years. The sweet potato waste biorefinery is a sustainable model and contributes to the development of the agriculture and food sector by providing new businesses and consequent job creation. It also leads to the reduction of greenhouse emissions by producing renewable resources and marketable products, thus reaching the goals of the circular economy
