    Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the consumption profile with the possible stimulants effects on the central nervous system (CNS) in academics of the Pharmacy course at the Universidade Federal do Amapá, through a validated questionnaire. Method: this pharmacoepidemiologic research has a cross-sectional and descriptive study. The procedure consisted of a three-domain questionnaire’s elaboration: 1. Sociodemographic; 2. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI); and 3. Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire, with a probability sampling of 166 students. The questionnaire/ sociodemographic domain was validated through specialists and the application was conducted in three different period steps for ten academics (protocol number 3.753.673). Result: The validation process resulted in predominantly poor/weak concordances, and 60,8% of the interviewed academics confirmed consuming psychostimulants, of these about 51% consumes two or more substances considered CNS stimulants. As shown, the proposed instrument was validated, despite the week’s concordance in the Kappa index. Conclusion: The collected data from the instrument showed that the CNS stimulants consumption affects more than 50% of the students and that these substances bring risk to life, being observed abstinence symptoms by its users

    Obesity influences the development of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis in Wistar rats

    Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is characterized by bone exposure for more than eight weeks in patients who have used or been treated with antiresorptive or antiangiogenic drugs, without a history of radiation therapy or metastatic diseases in the jaws. Obesity is associated with changes in periodontal tissues and oral microbiota that are linked to bone alterations. This study aimed to analyze the influence of obesity on the development of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis. The experiment randomly and simply divided 24 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) into four groups: healthy, with osteonecrosis, obese, and obese with osteonecrosis (n=6 per group). Osteonecrosis was induced through weekly intraperitoneal injection for eight weeks at a dose of 250 µg/kg of zoledronic acid in a 4 mg/5 mL solution, combined with trauma (exodontia). Obesity was induced through a high glycaemic index diet. Each group was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated regarding the development of models and pathological anatomy of the lesions. The results were expressed in mean percentage and standard deviation and statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post-hoc test, with a significance level of 5% (p<0.05) to establish differences found between the groups. Animals in the osteonecrosis group and the obese with osteonecrosis group presented larger necrosis areas (averages: 172.83±18,19 µm2 and 290.33±15,77 µm2, respectively) (p<0,0001). Bone sequestration, hepatic steatosis, and increased adipocyte size were observed in the obese group (average: 97.75±1.91 µm2) and in the obese with osteonecrosis group (average: 98.41±1.56 µm2), indicating greater tissue damage in these groups (p<0,0001). All parameters analyzed (through histological, morphometric, and murinometric analyses) increased for the obese and obese with osteonecrosis groups, suggesting a possible influence of obesity on the results. However, further studies are needed to confirm the role of obesity in the possible exacerbation of osteonecrosis and understand the underlying mechanisms

    A estenose aórtica (EAo) é a doença valvar aórtica adquirida mais frequente e terá importância crescente nas próximas décadas, conforme ocorre uma tendência mais pronunciada ao envelhecimento da população. Alguns pacientes com estenose valvar aórtica (EAo) apresentam baixos gradientes (gradiente transvalvar médio < 40mmHg), apesar de área valvar compatível com EAo importante (AVA < 1,0 cm2 ) e da fração de ejeção do ventrículo esquerdo preservada (FE > 50%). Dentre estes pacientes, é possível a identificação de dois grupos: um com fluxo normal (volume sistólico indexado, VSI > 35 mL/m2), que apresenta boa evolução e prognóstico, comparáveis aos pacientes com EAo moderada (AVA 1,0 a 1,5 cm2 ), e outro, com baixo fluxo (VSI ≤ 35mL/m2) que está associada à pior prognóstico, sendo definidos como portadores de “EAo paradoxal” (ou EAo baixo-fluxo, baixo-gradiente com fração de ejeção preservada). Estes pacientes devem ser cuidadosamente avaliados para que não tenham seus sintomas subestimados, pois o atraso no diagnóstico da EAo paradoxal provoca retardo na intervenção, acarretando um aumento na mortalidade

    Population-based seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and the herd immunity threshold in Maranhão

    OBJECTIVE: To estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. METHODS: A population-based household survey was performed, from July 27, 2020 to August 8, 2020. The estimates considered clustering, stratification and non-response. Qualitative detection of IgM and IgG antibodies was performed in a fully-automated Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay on the Cobas® e601 analyzer (Roche Diagnostics). RESULTS: In total, 3,156 individuals were interviewed. Seroprevalence of total antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was 40.4% (95%CI 35.6-45.3). Population adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions was higher at the beginning of the pandemic than in the last month. SARS-CoV-2 infection rates were significantly lower among mask wearers and among those who maintained social and physical distancing in the last month compared to their counterparts. Among the infected, 26.0% were asymptomatic. The infection fatality rate (IFR) was 0.14%, higher for men and older adults. The IFR based on excess deaths was 0.28%. The ratio of estimated infections to reported cases was 22.2. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 estimated in this population-based survey is one of the highest reported.     Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory Activity from Algae of the Genus Caulerpa

    Marine natural products have been the focus of discovery for new products of chemical and pharmacological interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of the methanolic (ME), acetate (AE), hexanic (HE) and chloroform (CE) extracts obtained from Caulerpa mexicana, and ME, CE and HE obtained from Caulerpa sertularioides. These marine algae are found all over the world, mainly in tropical regions. Models such as the writhing test, the hot plate test and formalin-induced nociception test were used to evaluate antinociceptive activity in laboratory mice. In the writhing test, all the extracts were administered orally at a concentration of 100 mg/kg, and induced high peripheral antinociceptive activity, with a reduction in the nociception induced by acetic acid above 65%. In the hot plate test, treatment with extracts from C. sertularioides (100 mg/kg, p.o.) did not significantly increase the latency of response, although the ME, AE and HE from C. mexicana showed activity in this model. This result suggests that these extracts exhibit antinociceptive activity. In the formalin test, it was observed that ME, AE and HE obtained from C. mexicana reduced the effects of formalin in both phases. On the other hand only CE from C. sertularioides induced significant inhibition of the nociceptive response in the first phase. To better assess the potential anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts, the carrageenan-induced peritonitis test was used to test Caulerpa spp. extracts on cell migration into the peritoneal cavity. In this assay, all extracts evaluated were able to significantly inhibit leukocyte migration into the peritoneal cavity in comparison with carrageenan. These data demonstrate that extracts from Caulerpa species elicit pronounced antinociceptive and anti-inflamatory activity against several nociception models. However, pharmacological and chemical studies are continuing in order to characterize the mechanism(s) responsible for the antinociceptive action and also to identify the active principles present in the Caulerpa species

    Prevalência de traumas em membros inferiores de pacientes atendidos pela fisioterapia no Hospital Regional de Ceilândia

    Objetivos: verificar o perfil epidemiológico e a prevalência dos traumatismos de membros inferiores de pacientes atendidos por fisioterapeutas em um hospital público do Distrito Federal, demonstrando essa prevalência quanto à região anatômica, o tipo e o mecanismo de lesão e realizar uma análise da função muscular dos membros inferiores de dados de uma avaliação inicial. Método: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo transversal baseado na análise dos dados de fichas de avaliação realizadas durante o projeto Prevenção de Deformidades Ortopédicas em Pessoas com Deficiência Física do PET/Saúde Redes de Atenção à Saúde entre 2013 a 2015. Resultados: Foram analisadas no total 224 fichas, em que houve predomínio do sexo masculino (72,32%), idade média de 42,47±19,59 anos, etnia parda (43,30%), situação conjugal solteiro (40,63%), escolaridade de ensino fundamental completo (57,14%). A região anatômica mais acometida foi o fêmur (27,68%), a fratura (80,36%) foi o tipo de lesão mais prevalente, e o acidente de trânsito (43,75%) foi o mecanismo de lesão mais predominante.     Local hydrological conditions influence tree diversity and composition across the Amazon basin

    Tree diversity and composition in Amazonia are known to be strongly determined by the water supplied by precipitation. Nevertheless, within the same climatic regime, water availability is modulated by local topography and soil characteristics (hereafter referred to as local hydrological conditions), varying from saturated and poorly drained to well-drained and potentially dry areas. While these conditions may be expected to influence species distribution, the impacts of local hydrological conditions on tree diversity and composition remain poorly understood at the whole Amazon basin scale. Using a dataset of 443 1-ha non-flooded forest plots distributed across the basin, we investigate how local hydrological conditions influence 1) tree alpha diversity, 2) the community-weighted wood density mean (CWM-wd) – a proxy for hydraulic resistance and 3) tree species composition. We find that the effect of local hydrological conditions on tree diversity depends on climate, being more evident in wetter forests, where diversity increases towards locations with well-drained soils. CWM-wd increased towards better drained soils in Southern and Western Amazonia. Tree species composition changed along local soil hydrological gradients in Central-Eastern, Western and Southern Amazonia, and those changes were correlated with changes in the mean wood density of plots. Our results suggest that local hydrological gradients filter species, influencing the diversity and composition of Amazonian forests. Overall, this study shows that the effect of local hydrological conditions is pervasive, extending over wide Amazonian regions, and reinforces the importance of accounting for local topography and hydrology to better understand the likely response and resilience of forests to increased frequency of extreme climate events and rising temperatures

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     Geography and ecology shape the phylogenetic composition of Amazonian tree communities

    Aim: Amazonia hosts more tree species from numerous evolutionary lineages, both young and ancient, than any other biogeographic region. Previous studies have shown that tree lineages colonized multiple edaphic environments and dispersed widely across Amazonia, leading to a hypothesis, which we test, that lineages should not be strongly associated with either geographic regions or edaphic forest types. Location: Amazonia. Taxon: Angiosperms (Magnoliids; Monocots; Eudicots). Methods: Data for the abundance of 5082 tree species in 1989 plots were combined with a mega-phylogeny. We applied evolutionary ordination to assess how phylogenetic composition varies across Amazonia. We used variation partitioning and Moran\u27s eigenvector maps (MEM) to test and quantify the separate and joint contributions of spatial and environmental variables to explain the phylogenetic composition of plots. We tested the indicator value of lineages for geographic regions and edaphic forest types and mapped associations onto the phylogeny. Results: In the terra firme and várzea forest types, the phylogenetic composition varies by geographic region, but the igapó and white-sand forest types retain a unique evolutionary signature regardless of region. Overall, we find that soil chemistry, climate and topography explain 24% of the variation in phylogenetic composition, with 79% of that variation being spatially structured (R2^{2} = 19% overall for combined spatial/environmental effects). The phylogenetic composition also shows substantial spatial patterns not related to the environmental variables we quantified (R2^{2} = 28%). A greater number of lineages were significant indicators of geographic regions than forest types. Main Conclusion: Numerous tree lineages, including some ancient ones (>66 Ma), show strong associations with geographic regions and edaphic forest types of Amazonia. This shows that specialization in specific edaphic environments has played a long-standing role in the evolutionary assembly of Amazonian forests. Furthermore, many lineages, even those that have dispersed across Amazonia, dominate within a specific region, likely because of phylogenetically conserved niches for environmental conditions that are prevalent within regions
