    Self-​assembly of thiacyanine dyes in water for the synthesis of active hybrid nanofibres

    Water-​sol. self-​assembled nanostructures were synthesized by simple counter ion exchange of thiacyanine dyes which helps in the formation of nematic (N) and hexagonal (M) chromonic liq.-​cryst. (CLCs) phases. Conjugated double bonds as central spacers connected between two benzothiazole segments affect water soly. and liq. crystal formation. Aggregation-​dependent properties characterised by UV-​visible, fluorescence and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Sol-​gel reaction of dye aggregates with silica species furnishes entangled nanotubular fibers with const. diam. and their length in excess of micrometres, having templates of pore sizes below the mesoporous range. The π-​π stacked chromonic aggregate dyes are also of importance in shape selective catalysis, adsorption, desorption micro-​patterned materials, and provide a significant step towards biosensor medical applications because of their water-​sol. nature

    This book digs into an area of international migration studies that has gained prominence in the past couple of decades: migrant smuggling. The regional focus is southern Europe, which receives immigrants from many African and Asian countries. Migrant smuggling is discussed in relation to EU and national policies, aimed at combating irregular migration, including increased surveillance and border controls.The authors are no newcomers to the field. Anna Triandafyllidou is a leading scholar in migration studies, having published extensively on various topics dealing with migration in Europe, and with a special interest in Greece and southern Europe. Thanos Maroukis, on the other hand, is an early career academic whose publications have focused specifically on migration in Greece. It is, therefore, not surprising that the authors approached this topic of migrant smuggling from Africa and Asia to Europe by focusing mainly on the situation in Greece and the Turkish-Greek route.     Levels of Participants Satisfaction with Initial Contact and Examination Visit: The Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study of Latinos (HCHS /SOL)

    Objective: This study examined perceived satisfaction among Hispanic/Latino individuals who participated in a baseline examination for the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), a large cohort study of 16,415 adults living in four selected communities. Method: An estimated 22% (n= 3,584) of participants completed a questionnaire regarding satisfaction with staff attention, the overall experience during the study examination, and the influence of the informed consent digital video disc (DVD). Results: The majority of participants who completed the questionnaire expressed overall satisfaction with the study. Most participants reported that staff were friendly, courteous and respectful and study test procedures were clearly explained. Participants who preferred to complete the interview in Spanish felt that the informed consent DVD positively influenced their ability to make an informed decision to enroll in the study. Participants who preferred to complete the interview in English tended to report that the baseline examination was longer than expected compared with participants who completed the interview in Spanish. Conclusion: Results demonstrate that culturally and linguistically trained staff and the use of the study’s informed consent DVD were effective in explaining study procedures and positively influenced decisions to participate in the HCHS/SOL study. These results can inform recruitment and enrollment strategies for future participation of minority groups into longitudinal cohort studies.     Genetically engineered Silk-Elastin-Like Proteins as a versatile platform for the development of new biomaterials

    [Excerpt] Throughout evolution nature created and refined proteins for a wide range of functions, working as structural components or as molecular motors. In this sense, the natural fibrous proteins represent the utmost case of function specialization and high performance materials. The remarkable mechanical properties of proteins like elastin or silk are founded on conservative blocks of amino acid sequences that propagate through the natural protein. These repetitive amino acid sequences are arranged in a way that creates flexible, rigid or tough domains, which are responsible for the physical and mechanical properties of the natural protein. Indeed, the recognition of the mechanics linking the nano- and micro-scale structure with the macromolecular assembly and organization, enabled molecular biologists to understand nature’s refined ways of creating high performance structural materials. Advances in synthetic protein biotechnology, emerging from the increase of knowledge in structural and molecular biology, combined with the use of recombinant DNA technology and biotechnology processes, made possible the advent of a new class of artificial biomacromolecules, the recombinant Protein-Based Polymers (rPBPs). This new class of protein-based materials, inspired in nature and with precisely controlled amino acid sequences, mimic the properties of their natural counterparts but can also combine in the same polypeptide chain the properties of two or more different proteins, creating copolymers with distinct properties from their native equivalents. Indeed, by recombinant DNA technology, it is possible to design and produce tailored synthetic genes, allowing for the creation of multifunctional complex PBPs with absolute control of its composition, structure and molecular weight.     Difficulties on the acces to innovative targeted therapies for lung cancer in Spain

    Purpose Spanish Lung Cancer Group (SLCG) conducted a review to analyze the barriers to access to innovative targeted therapies for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in clinical practice in Spain. Methods Review all relevant content published on websites of European Commission, European Medicines Agency, and Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Products regarding the authorization and access to oncology treatments. Results More than 20 targeted therapies are available to treat different molecular alterations in patients with NSCLC. European Commission has approved treatments for genomic alterations involving the following genes: ALK, RET, ROS1, EGFR, BRAF, NTRK, KRAS, MET. However, the availability of these therapies in Spain is not complete, as innovative treatments are not reimbursed or funded late, with only five of these alterations currently covered by National Health System. Conclusion SLCG considers imperative to improve the access in Spain to innovative treatments for NSCLC to reduce inequity across European countries

    Role of counter-ion and helper lipid content in the design and properties of nanocarrier systems: a biophysical study in 2D and 3D lipid assemblies

    There is a direct correlation between the physicochemical properties of nanocarrier systems and their biological performance, including stability under physiological conditions, cellular internalization and transfection efficiency. Therefore, understanding the biophysical aspects that affect self-assembled nanocarriers is determinant for a rational design of efficient formulations. In this study, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of each component on the molecular organization of aggregates formed by the cationic lipids dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide and chloride (DODAB and DODAC) and the neutral lipid monoolein (MO) was made. Specifically, the effects of the helper lipid content (MO) and the role of the counter-ion of the cationic lipids were evaluated in 2D and 3D assemblies by Langmuir surface pressure–molecular area (π–A) isotherms, Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), confocal Raman microscopy, and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). The results show that MO has a different distribution on the DODAC and DODAB bilayers, and a fluidizing effect dependent on the MO content. For low MO molar ratios, the fluidizing effect was more pronounced in DODAC : MO mixtures, indicating a more homogeneous distribution of MO in DODAC than in DODAB bilayers. For high MO molar ratios, packing of membranes was similar for both cationic lipids, and the effect of the counter-ion is attenuated. The distribution of MO in the two cationic systems is closely related with the efficiency of the counter-ions in the screening of the charged group.We acknowledge DAAD/FCT that provided the financial support required to gather the Portuguese and the German coworkers.
