    Centralized Algorithms Based on Clustering with Self-tuning of Parameters for Cooperative Target Observation

    Clustering on target positions is a class of centralized algorithms used to calculate the surveillance robots' displacements in the Cooperative Target Observation (CTO) problem. This work proposes and evaluates Fuzzy C-means (FCM) and Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) with K-means (DBSk) based self-tuning clustering centralized algorithms for the CTO problem and compares its performances with that of K-means. Two random motion patterns are adopted for the targets: in free space or on a grid. As a contribution, the work allows identifying ranges of problem configuration parameters in which each algorithm shows the highest average performance. As a first conclusion, in the challenging situation in which the relative speed of the targets is high, and the relative sensor range of the surveillance is low, for which the existing algorithms present a substantial drop in performance, the FCM algorithm proposed outperforms the others. Finally, the DBSk algorithm adapts very well in low execution frequency, showing promising results in this challenging situation

    No presente trabalho, serão apresentadas as atividades “Cientista ao Vivo” e “Conheça o Cientista da sua Terra”, realizadas no evento "Em clima de saúde: prevenindo com ciência!". As atividades integraram a VIII edição da Semana Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia, que teve como tema central, no ano de 2011, “Mudanças climáticas, desastres naturais e prevenção de riscos”. O evento foi promovido pelo Centro de Pesquisas René Rachou, unidade mineira da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (CPqRR- Fiocruz/Minas) em parceria com a Escola de Saúde Pública do Estado de Minas Gerais (ESP-MG). Esta proposição sustentou-se no compromisso que estas instituições têm com a socialização no âmbito da coletividade no que se refere à concepção de saúde em seu sentido ampliado. Durante os seis dias de evento, sete escolas estiveram presentes. Ao todo, 451 alunos e 31 professores/coordenadores participaram. Acreditamos que as atividades realizadas puderam contribuir para a ampliação da informação sobre saúde e prevenção de riscos, como também para o crescimento da compreensão sobre a ciência produzida em Minas Gerais e no Brasil e sua interlocução com questões de relevância para a sociedade

    Induced aerocystitis and hemato-immunological parameters in Nile tilapia fed supplemented diet with essential oil of Lippia alba

    O presente estudo avaliou a suplementação dietária com óleo essencial de Lippia alba sobre os parâmetros hemato-imunológicos em tilápias do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) submetidas à inflamação aguda induzida por carragenina na bexiga natatória. Pelo período de 45 dias, 96 peixes foram divididos em quarto tratamentos em triplicata: a) peixes suplementados com óleo esencial de L. alba (4 mL kg-1 de ração) injetados com carragenina; b) peixes suplementados com álcool de cereais injetados com carragenina; peixes não suplementados com óleo essencial injetados com carragenina; c) peixes não suplementados não injetados. Os níveis de cortisol, eritrograma, leucograma e o infiltrado inflamatório foram analisados seis horas após o estímulo inflamatório. Peixes injetados com carragenina apresentaram reação inflamatória aguda na bexiga natatória caracterizada por maior infiltrado de neutrófilos e monócitos. O número de neutrófilos circulantes foi significativamente maior nos peixes suplementados com L. alba quando comparado aos outros tratamentos. Não houve diferença nos níveis de cortisol. Para a dose, o tempo e a forma de administração testada, a suplementação com óleo essencil de L. alba não apresentou atividade anti-inflamatória. Por outro lado, foi constatada influência da suplementação dietária no número de neutrófilos após a aerocistite enfatizando a sua característica imunomoduladora.The present study evaluated the dietary supplementation with essential oil of Lippia alba on the hemato-immunological parameters of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) submitted to acute inflammation induced by carrageenin injection in the swim bladder. For a period of 45 days, 96 fish were divided in four treatments in triplicate, as follows: fish fed supplemented diet with essential oil of L. alba (4 mL kg-1 dry ration) injected with carrageenin; fish fed supplemented diet with cereal alcohol injected with carrageenin; fish fed unsupplemented diet with essential oil injected with carrageenin; fish fed unsupplemented diet and noninjected. Cortisol levels, erythrogram, leukogram and the inflammatory infiltrate were analyzed 6 h after inflammatory stimulus. Carrageenin-injected fish showed acute inflammatory reaction in the swim bladder characterized by higher infiltrate of neutrophils and monocytes. The circulating neutrophils number was significantly higher in fish fed L. alba when compared to other treatments. No difference in cortisol levels was found. For dose, time and administration form tested, supplementation with essential oil of L. alba did not present anti-inflammatory activity. On the other hand, influence of dietary supplementation was observed on the neutrophils number after induced aerocystitis highlighting its immunomodulatory characteristic

    Importance of anatomopathological analysis and histopathological examination for the diagnosis of suspected cases of syphilitic aneurysm

    Introduction: syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by mycobacterium Treponema pallidum in which in its tertiary stage can lead to an aortic syphilitic aneurysm. Currently, such cases are rare because of the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy. Objective: we aimed to carry out an anatomopathological analysis and histopathological examination of three cases potentially suspicious of aortic syphilitic aneurysm on human corpses. Methods: It was a descriptive study which 03 anatomic specimens of aortas from cadavers with ages ranging from 50 to 91 years obtained in Service checklist of deaths during the period from 2014 to 2015. We performed an anatomopathological and histopathological analysis with the use of special dyes. Results: through the macroscopic evaluation it was observed in all cases a dilation corresponding to arch of aorta where the intima obtained an aspect of longitudinal striation, classic of syphilitic process. As for histopathological study on the tissues treatment with the staining batteries, it was demonstrated the presence of the dissecting hematoma in all cases, besides necrosis and absence characteristic of the inflammatory process. Conclusion: the anatomopathological and histopathological study are diagnostic tools which have specific characteristics and are directed to assist in preliminary diagnosis of suspected cases of aortic syphilitic aneurysm in necropsies

    Evaluation of eleven immunochromatographic assays for SARS-CoV-2 detection: investigating the dengue cross-reaction

    COVID-19 disease is spread worldwide and diagnostic techniques have been studied in order to contain the pandemic. Immunochromatographic (IC) assays are feasible and a low-cost alternative especially in low and middle-income countries, which lack structure to perform certain diagnostic techniques. Here we evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of eleven different IC tests in 145 serum samples from confirmed cases of COVID-19 using RT-PCR and 100 negative serum samples from blood donors collected in February 2019. We also evaluated the cross-reactivity with dengue using 20 serum samples from patients with confirmed diagnosis for dengue collected in early 2019 through four different tests. We found high sensitivity (92%), specificity (100%) and an almost perfect agreement (Kappa 0.92) of IC assay, especially when we evaluated IgG and IgM combined after 10 days from the onset of symptoms with RT-PCR. However, we detected cross-reactivity between dengue and COVID-19 mainly with IgM antibodies (5 to 20% of cross-reaction) and demonstrated the need for better studies about diagnostic techniques for these diseases

    In vitro inhibition of Plasmodium falciparum by substances isolated from Amazonian antimalarial plants

    In the present study, a quassinoid, neosergeolide, isolated from the roots and stems of Picrolemma sprucei (Simaroubaceae), the indole alkaloids ellipticine and aspidocarpine, isolated from the bark of Aspidosperma vargasii and A. desmanthum (Apocynaceae), respectively, and 4-nerolidylcatechol, isolated from the roots of Pothomorphe peltata (Piperaceae), all presented significant in vitro inhibition (more active than quinine and chloroquine) of the multi-drug resistant K1 strain of Plasmodium falciparum. Neosergeolide presented activity in the nanomolar range. This is the first report on the antimalarial activity of these known, natural compounds. This is also the first report on the isolation of aspidocarpine from A. desmanthum. These compounds are good candidates for pre-clinical tests as novel lead structures with the aim of finding new antimalarial prototypes and lend support to the traditional use of the plants from which these compounds are derived

    O trabalho analisa mensagens transmitidas por cartões-postais produzidos e circulados na França no contexto da Primeira Guerra Mundial (1914-1918), apresentando temática associada ao conflito. O objetivo é contrapor as mensagens iconográficas e textuais neles impressas à quelas que foram manuscritas por seus remetentes, de modo a evidenciar formas de expressão e percepções do conflito, conforme empregadas por civis e militares, em diferentes momentos de seu desenvolvimento.The paper analyzes messages conveyed by postcards produced and circulated in France during the First World War (1914-1918), with themes referring to the conflict. The intention is to compare the iconographic and textual messages printed with handwritten messages, to display forms of expression and perception of war, used by civilian and military on different occasions

    Uso do teste LF-LAM para diagnóstico de Tuberculose ativa em paciente que vive com HIV

    A tuberculose (TB) é uma doença infectocontagiosa granulomatosa, de alta infectividade e baixa patogenicidade, de tropismo primariamente respiratório, mas que pode afetar outros órgãos, como linfonodos, pele, rins, intestino e cérebro. É imperativo excluir o diagnóstico de TB em pacientes diagnosticados com HIV. Este estudo se trata do relato de caso de um paciente de 30 anos, gênero masculino, sem comorbidades prévias, que comparece à Unidade de Pronto Atendimento (UPA) queixando-se de desconforto respiratório aos pequenos esforços, tosse seca, febrícula aferida diariamente, diaforese, disfagia e perda ponderal de 15 kg. Feita a suspeição clínica de tuberculose, optou-se pela solicitação do teste rápido molecular para TB, no entanto, o paciente não conseguiu produzir a amostra necessária para análise. Assim, foi solicitado o teste de antígeno urinário lipoarabinomanano, que foi positivo, permitindo o tratamento precoce dessa grave infecção. Confirmou-se, também, o diagnóstico de HIV. O desconhecimento de métodos diagnósticos alternativos para pacientes de alto risco para TB é um complexo desafio em saúde pública, dada a elevada taxa de morbimortalidade nos portadores dessa doença, sobretudo, naqueles coinfectados com o vírus HIV

    Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.
