Anomalous buoyancy of quantum bubbles in immiscible Bose mixtures

Buoyancy is a well-known effect in immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensates. Depending on the differential confinement experienced by the two components, a bubble of one component sitting at the center of the other eventually floats to the surface, around which it spreads either totally or partially. We discuss how quantum fluctuations may significantly change the volume and position of immiscible bubbles. We consider the particular case of two miscible components, forming a pseudo-scalar bubble condensate with enhanced quantum fluctuations (quantum bubble), immersed in a bath provided by a third component, with which they are immiscible. We show that in such a peculiar effective binary mixture, quantum fluctuations change the equilibrium of pressures that define the bubble volume and modify as well the criterion for buoyancy. Once buoyancy sets in, in contrast to the mean-field case, quantum fluctuations may place the bubble at an intermediate position between the center and the surface. At the surface, the quantum bubble may transition into a floating self-bound droplet.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

A female patient of 26 years old, with personal pathological history of congenital glaucoma and blindness in the right eye that three days before his admission to “Arnaldo Milian Castro” Hospital began with chills, fever of 39-410°C, universal headache, nausea, projectile vomiting and fetid dark urine, fot those reasons she was admitted in the “Celestino Hernández Robau” Hospital with the presumptive diagnosis of dengue; she evolved bad, so she was sent to “Arnaldo Milian Castro” Hospital with the same symptoms and taking consciousness. On physical examination of the central nervous system, It was appreciated nuchal rigidity ++, bilateral Babinsky, somnolence, disorientation and Glasgow 13/15. An axial computerized tomography was realized that showed hypodense of both thalamuses badly definite, in the midline of both cerebellar hemispheres an image of similar characteristics and III ventricle collapsed. It raised vasculitis with multiple several cerebral infarctions and possible meningoencephalitis and died 26 days admitted. Pathologic findings allowed the diagnosis of damage and multiple organ failure in patient suffering thrombotic microangiopathy.

Evaluation of in vitro Antifungal Activity of Xylosma prockia (Turcz.) Turcz. (Salicaceae) Leaves Against Cryptococcus spp.

Cryptococcus species are responsible for important systemic mycosis and are estimated to cause millions of new cases annually. The available therapy is limited due to the high toxicity and the increasing rates of yeast resistance to antifungal drugs. Popularly known as “sucará,” Xylosma prockia (Turcz.) Turcz. (Salicaceae) is a native plant from Brazil with little information on its pharmacological potential. In this work, we evaluated in vitro anticryptococcal effects of the leaf ethanolic extract of X. prockia and its fractions against Cryptococcus gattii and Cryptococcus neoformans. We also evaluated phenotypic alterations caused by ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) (chosen according to its biological results). The liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis of EAF demonstrated the presence of phenolic metabolites that belong to three structurally related groups as majority compounds: caffeoylquinic acid, coumaroyl-glucoside, and caffeoyl-glucoside/deoxyhexosyl-caffeoyl glucoside derivatives. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against C. gattii and C. neoformans ranged from 8 to 64 mg/L and from 0.5 to 8 mg/L, for ethanolic extract and EAF, respectively. The EAF triggered an oxidative burst and promoted lipid peroxidation. EAF also induced a reduction of ergosterol content in the pathogen cell membrane. These effects were not associated with alterations in the cell surface charge or in the thermodynamic fingerprint of the molecular interaction between EAF and the yeasts evaluated. Cytotoxic experiments with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) demonstrated that EAF was more selective for yeasts than was PBMCs. The results may provide evidence that X. prockia leaf extract might indeed be a potential source of antifungal agents.Fil: Folly, Mariany L. C.. Expression of sterol regulatory element-binding proteins in epicardial adipose tissue in patients with coronary artery disease and diabetes mellitus: preliminary study

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Objectives: Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBP) genes are crucial in lipid biosynthesis and cardiovascular homeostasis. Their expression in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and their influence in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus remain to be determined. The aim of our study was to evaluate the expression of SREBP genes in EAT in patients with CAD according to diabetes status and its association with clinical and biochemical data. Methods: SREBP-1 and SREBP-2 mRNA expression levels were measured in EAT from 49 patients with CAD (26 with diabetes) and 23 controls without CAD or diabetes. Results: Both SREBPs mRNA expression were significantly higher in patients with CAD and diabetes (p<0.001) and were identified as independent cardiovascular risk factor for coronary artery disease in patients with type-2 diabetes (SREBP-1: OR 1.7, 95%CI 1.1-2.5, p=0.02; SREBP-2: OR 1.6, 95%CI 1.2-3, p=0.02) and were independently associated with the presence of multivessel CAD, left main and anterior descending artery stenosis, and higher total and LDL cholesterol levels, and lower HDL cholesterol levels, in patients with CAD and diabetes. Conclusions: SREBP genes are expressed in EAT and were higher in CAD patients with diabetes than those patients without CAD or diabetes. SREBP expression was associated as cardiovascular risk factor for the severity of CAD and the poor lipid control. In this preliminary study we suggest the importance of EAT in the lipid metabolism and cardiovascular homeostasis for coronary atherosclerosis of patients with diabetes and highlight a future novel therapeutic target.Instituto de Salud Carlos III; PI13/02542Instituto de Salud Carlos III; PI11/01661Red de Investigación Cardiovascular; RD12/0042/003

The institutions of archaic post-modernity and their organizational and managerial consequences: The case of Portugal

    Get PDF
The long march of modernization of the Western societies tends to be presented as following a regular sequence: societies and institutions were pre-modern, and then they were modernized, eventually becoming post-modern. Such teleology may provide an incomplete or distorted narrative of societal evolution in many parts of the world, even in the ‘post-modern heartland’ of Western Europe, with Portugal being a case in point. The concept of archaic post-modernity has been developed by a philosopher, José Gil, to show how Portuguese institutions and organizations combine elements of pre-modernity and post-modernity. The notion of an archaic post-modernity is advanced in order to provide an alternative account of the modernization process, which enriches discussion of the varieties of capitalism. Differences in historical experiences create singularities that may be considered in the analysis of culture, management and organization
