Andalusian people in the TV reality: audience through the anonymus andalusian stereotype on TV
question. The analysis departs from the overrepresentation of Andalusian people on this kind of programs. This article attempts to
understand the importance of these representation on these successful programs. From this television format and structure study, the
argumentation is based on sociological and managerial reason

Evaluating Bias and Fairness in Gender-Neutral Pretrained Vision-and-Language Models
Pretrained machine learning models are known to perpetuate and even amplify
existing biases in data, which can result in unfair outcomes that ultimately
impact user experience. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms
behind those prejudicial biases to ensure that model performance does not
result in discriminatory behaviour toward certain groups or populations. In
this work, we define gender bias as our case study. We quantify bias
amplification in pretraining and after fine-tuning on three families of
vision-and-language models. We investigate the connection, if any, between the
two learning stages, and evaluate how bias amplification reflects on model
performance. Overall, we find that bias amplification in pretraining and after
fine-tuning are independent. We then examine the effect of continued
pretraining on gender-neutral data, finding that this reduces group
disparities, i.e., promotes fairness, on VQAv2 and retrieval tasks without
significantly compromising task performance.Comment: To appear in EMNLP 202
Being Right for Whose Right Reasons?
Explainability methods are used to benchmark the extent to which model
predictions align with human rationales i.e., are 'right for the right
reasons'. Previous work has failed to acknowledge, however, that what counts as
a rationale is sometimes subjective. This paper presents what we think is a
first of its kind, a collection of human rationale annotations augmented with
the annotators demographic information. We cover three datasets spanning
sentiment analysis and common-sense reasoning, and six demographic groups
(balanced across age and ethnicity). Such data enables us to ask both what
demographics our predictions align with and whose reasoning patterns our
models' rationales align with. We find systematic inter-group annotator
disagreement and show how 16 Transformer-based models align better with
rationales provided by certain demographic groups: We find that models are
biased towards aligning best with older and/or white annotators. We zoom in on
the effects of model size and model distillation, finding -- contrary to our
expectations -- negative correlations between model size and rationale
agreement as well as no evidence that either model size or model distillation
improves fairness.Comment: To be published in ACL 202
Cross-Cultural Transfer Learning for Chinese Offensive Language Detection
Detecting offensive language is a challenging task. Generalizing across
different cultures and languages becomes even more challenging: besides
lexical, syntactic and semantic differences, pragmatic aspects such as cultural
norms and sensitivities, which are particularly relevant in this context, vary
greatly. In this paper, we target Chinese offensive language detection and aim
to investigate the impact of transfer learning using offensive language
detection data from different cultural backgrounds, specifically Korean and
English. We find that culture-specific biases in what is considered offensive
negatively impact the transferability of language models (LMs) and that LMs
trained on diverse cultural data are sensitive to different features in Chinese
offensive language detection. In a few-shot learning scenario, however, our
study shows promising prospects for non-English offensive language detection
with limited resources. Our findings highlight the importance of cross-cultural
transfer learning in improving offensive language detection and promoting
inclusive digital spaces.Comment: C3NLP@EAC
Rather a Nurse than a Physician -- Contrastive Explanations under Investigation
Contrastive explanations, where one decision is explained in contrast to
another, are supposed to be closer to how humans explain a decision than
non-contrastive explanations, where the decision is not necessarily referenced
to an alternative. This claim has never been empirically validated. We analyze
four English text-classification datasets (SST2, DynaSent, BIOS and
DBpedia-Animals). We fine-tune and extract explanations from three different
models (RoBERTa, GTP-2, and T5), each in three different sizes and apply three
post-hoc explainability methods (LRP, GradientxInput, GradNorm). We furthermore
collect and release human rationale annotations for a subset of 100 samples
from the BIOS dataset for contrastive and non-contrastive settings. A
cross-comparison between model-based rationales and human annotations, both in
contrastive and non-contrastive settings, yields a high agreement between the
two settings for models as well as for humans. Moreover, model-based
explanations computed in both settings align equally well with human
rationales. Thus, we empirically find that humans do not necessarily explain in
a contrastive manner.9 pages, long paper at ACL 2022 proceedings.Comment: 9 pages, long paper at EMNLP 2023 proceeding
The incidence of human fungal infections has greatly increased in the last twenty years. Candida albicans is the leading cause of human systemic as well as superficial mycoses. In healthy individuals, C. albicans acts as a commensal organism. However, in immunosuppressed patients it acts as an opportunistic pathogen. The commensal to pathogen shift of C. albicans depends on the loss of the balance between the immune system and the fungus.
Approximately 80 percent of human infections are due to the formation of biofilms. Biofilms are microorganism communities that develop on biotic or non-biotic surfaces covered by a complex tridimensional structure of extracellular matrix. Biofilm formation is an outstanding clinical problem because their microorganisms are more resistant to both antimicrobial agents and the immune response. In this regard, most Candida infections are associated with biofilm formation.
Amongst the different virulence factors of C. albicans (morphogenesis, phenotypical change, quorum sensing, hydrolytic enzyme secretion, adhesion, and hydrophobicity), biofilm formation and hydrophobicity have been, and are still currently, considered as outstanding factors.
In this PhD thesis, both properties of C. albicans have been thoroughly analyzed in 448 clinical isolates of C. albicans from patients with systemic candidiasis. The hydrophobicity study of these 448 isolates showed that no significant differences were found among the 88 percent of the isolates or between the clinical isolates and the control strand C. albicans SC5314. Regarding the biofilm formation, 70 percent of the isolates had low or no biofilm formation ability. Moreover, there was no correlation between hydrophobicity and biofilm formation capacity.
The biofilm matrix has a major role in its growth, it is involved in the adhesion interactions, is responsible for its mechanical stability, and controls cell dispersion. In addition, it acts as a digestive system providing nutrients for its constituent cells as well as a protective barrier against both antifungal agents and host defenses. Regarding these functional activities, among the cellular components of the biofilm, proteins deserve special attention due to both their potential enzymatic activity and as targets for other molecules.
In the proteomic analysis of the ethanolic extracts from of the extracellular matrix of the biofilms of nine clinical isolates and the control strain, 905 proteins were identified. Most of that proteins (mean 708) were present in the isolates with higher biofilm formation capacity; 148 in those with moderate biofilm formation capacity, and 143 in the isolates with poor biofilm formation capacity. Fifty seven proteins were common to all nine studied isolates and the control strain. That proteins are multifunctional species, from different cellular locations, and involved in different pathways, some of which deserve special interest, such as the defense against chemical or biological injuries, as well as their involvement in protein binding, transport and metabolism. Most of these proteins (93%) have negative hydropathic indexes which is concomitant with the fact that biofilms are considered hydrogels. Moreover, only 10 out of the 57 proteins had a signal peptide, which may mean that most of them get the extracellular matrix by a non-classic secretion way.
Glx3, one of the 57 common proteins, is also one of the major proteins. The study of mutants for the GLX3 gene showed that its absence produces a series of effects on the integrity of the cell wall and increases its sensitivity to agents that alter the assembly of the cell wall components, as well as to zymolyase and the oxidative stress, effects that are partially recovered by the reintegration of this gene. In addition, the null mutant for the GLX3 gene is avirulent in murine models. Due to these effects, further studies should investigate this GlX3 null mutant as a potential immunological tool
Autoregressive model based on a deep convolutional neural network for audio generation
The main objective of this work is to investigate how a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) performs in audio generation tasks. We study a final architecture based on an autoregressive model of deep CNN that operates directly at the waveform level.
In first place, we study different options to tackle the task of audio generation. We define the best approach as a classification task with one-hot encode data; generation is based on sequential predictions: after next sample of an input sequence is predicted, it is fed back into the network to predict the next sample.
We present the basics of the preferred architecture for generation, adapted from WaveNet model proposed by DeepMind. It is based on dilated causal convolutions which allows an exponential growth of the receptive field size with depth of the network. Bigger receptive fields are desirable when dealing with temporal sequences since it increases the model capacity to model temporal correlations at longer timescales.
Due to the lack of an objective method to assess the quality of new synthesized signals, we firstly test a wide range of network settings with pure tones so the network is capable to predict the same sequences. In order to overcome the diffculties of training a deep network and to accelerate the research adjusted to our computational resources, we constrain the input database to a mixture of two sinusoids within an audible range of frequencies. In generation phase, we acknowledge the key role of training a network with a large receptive field and large input sequences. Likewise, the amount of examples we feed to the network every training epoch exert a decisive influence in any studied approach
