Characterizing normal crossing hypersurfaces
The objective of this article is to give an effective algebraic
characterization of normal crossing hypersurfaces in complex manifolds. It is
shown that a hypersurface has normal crossings if and only if it is a free
divisor, has a radical Jacobian ideal and a smooth normalization. Using K.
Saito's theory of free divisors, also a characterization in terms of
logarithmic differential forms and vector fields is found and and finally
another one in terms of the logarithmic residue using recent results of M.

Linking forest cover, soil erosion and mire hydrology to late-Holocene human activity and climate in NW Spain

Because of the wide range of factors involved, understanding these complex links requires long-term multi-proxy approaches and research on the best proxies to focus. A peat core from NW Spain (Cruz do Bocelo mire), spanning the last ~3000 years, has been studied at high resolution by physical (density and loss on ignition (LOI)), geochemical (elemental composition) and palynological (pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs) analyses. Proxies related to mineral matter fluxes from the catchment (lithogenic tracers, Glomus and Entorrhiza), rainfall (Bromine), mire hydrology (HdV-18), human pressure (Cerealia-type, nitrophilous taxa and coprophilous fungi) and forest cover (mesophilous tree taxa) were the most useful to reconstruct the evolution of the mire and its catchment. Forest clearance for farming was one of the main drivers of environmental change from at least the local Iron Age (~2685 cal. yr BP) onwards. The most intense phase of deforestation occurred during Roman and Germanic times and the late Middle Ages. During these phases, the entire catchment was affected, resulting in enhanced soil erosion and severe hydrological modifications of the mire. Climate, especially rainfall, may have also accelerated these processes during wetter periods. However, it is noteworthy that the hydrology of the mire seems to have been insensitive to rainfall variations when mesophilous forest dominated. Abrupt changes were only detected once intense forest clearance commenced during the Iron Age/Roman transition (~2190 cal. yr BP) phase, which represented a tipping point in catchment's ability to buffer impacts. Benefícios dos Ativadores Seletivos dos Recetores de Vitamina D em Doentes Transplantados Renais
Severe chronic kidney disease may lead to disturbances, such as hyperphosphatemia, increased secretion
of fibroblast growth factor -23 (FGF -23) and vitamin D deficiency. These may increase plasmatic levels of
parathyroid hormone, and decrease plasmatic levels of calcium. Altogether, these may contribute to the
development of secondary hyperparathyroidism, and to abnormalities in mineral metabolism. Kidney transplantation is the best option to improve longevity and quality of life in end -stage chronic kidney disease
patients. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause
of death in chronic kidney disease. Therefore, diagnosing this deficiency may be pivotal for minimizing
mortality in chronic kidney disease, because pharmacological treatments for this deficiency may be prescribed.
Calcitriol is indicated for the treatment of vitamin D deficiency, both in chronic kidney disease and
in kidney transplanted patients. However, calcitriol may increase the plasmatic levels of calcium and phosphorous, which can lead to vascular calcifications, that have been associated with cardiovascular mortality.
Selective vitamin D receptor activators are indicated for the treatment of vitamin D deficiency in chronic
kidney disease. These have the advantage of being associated with lower increases of plasmatic levels of
calcium and phosphorous. These drugs also seem to have additional effects that may minimise patient
morbidity and mortality, especially due to potentially reducing cardiovascular events. Unfortunately, there
are few studies about the use of these drugs in kidney transplanted patients. Here we present a review about the physiology of vitamin D, the consequences of its deficiency in chronic kidney disease and in
kidney transplanted patients, and about the diagnosis and treatment of this deficiency. Finally, we discuss
the new line of research about the efficacy and safety of selective vitamin D receptor activators in kidney
transplanted patients
Antimicrobial and antioxidant screening of curcumin and pyrocatechol in the prevention of biodiesel degradation: oxidative stability
Owing to its hygroscopicity biodiesel may accumulate water during storage, which becomes favorable to the growth of microorganisms. In order to control microbial contamination, use of various chemical biocides has been studied. However, the addition of a natural substance simultaneously with antioxidant and microbial growth inhibition could prove advantageous in the prevention of biodiesel oxidation and microbial contamination. Curcumin and pyrocatechol are antioxidant agents, which also exhibit microbial growth inhibition abilities. This research effort aimed at evaluating the addition of curcumin and pyrocatechol to biodiesel produced from various vegetable sources (waste frying oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, sesame oil, macaúba almond oil and microalgae oil). The combined addition of 1% (w/w) water and curcumin (viz. 0.2% (w/w) for biodiesel from spent frying oil, 0.5% (w/w) for biodiesel from soybean oil, 0.1% (w/w) for biodiesel from cotton seed oil, 0.5% (w/w) for biodiesel from sesame seed oil, 0.2% (w/w) for biodiesel from macaúba almond oil, and 0.2% (w/w) for biodiesel from microalgae oil) were those processing variables that promoted the best fungistatic and antioxidant effects, allowing maintenance of an unfavorable environment for microbial growth in biodiesel inoculated with the ubiquitous filamentous mold Paecilomyces variotii Bainier.Project funding by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - Brazil) (CNPq Ref. Incompressible Fluids of the de Sitter Horizon and Beyond
There are (at least) two surfaces of particular interest in eternal de Sitter
space. One is the timelike hypersurface constituting the lab wall of a static
patch observer and the other is the future boundary of global de Sitter space.
We study both linear and non-linear deformations of four-dimensional de Sitter
space which obey the Einstein equation. Our deformations leave the induced
conformal metric and trace of the extrinsic curvature unchanged for a fixed
hypersurface. This hypersurface is either timelike within the static patch or
spacelike in the future diamond. We require the deformations to be regular at
the future horizon of the static patch observer. For linearized perturbations
in the future diamond, this corresponds to imposing incoming flux solely from
the future horizon of a single static patch observer. When the slices are
arbitrarily close to the cosmological horizon, the finite deformations are
characterized by solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for
both spacelike and timelike hypersurfaces. We then study, at the level of
linearized gravity, the change in the discrete dispersion relation as we push
the timelike hypersurface toward the worldline of the static patch. Finally, we
study the spectrum of linearized solutions as the spacelike slices are pushed
to future infinity and relate our calculations to analogous ones in the context

Categorical Dimensions of Human Odor Descriptor Space Revealed by Non-Negative Matrix Factorization
In contrast to most other sensory modalities, the basic perceptual dimensions of olfaction remain unclear. Here, we use non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) – a dimensionality reduction technique – to uncover structure in a panel of odor profiles, with each odor defined as a point in multi-dimensional descriptor space. The properties of NMF are favorable for the analysis of such lexical and perceptual data, and lead to a high-dimensional account of odor space. We further provide evidence that odor dimensions apply categorically. That is, odor space is not occupied homogenously, but rather in a discrete and intrinsically clustered manner. We discuss the potential implications of these results for the neural coding of odors, as well as for developing classifiers on larger datasets that may be useful for predicting perceptual qualities from chemical structures
Long gamma-ray bursts and core-collapse supernovae have different environments
When massive stars exhaust their fuel they collapse and often produce the
extraordinarily bright explosions known as core-collapse supernovae. On
occasion, this stellar collapse also powers an even more brilliant relativistic
explosion known as a long-duration gamma-ray burst. One would then expect that
long gamma-ray bursts and core-collapse supernovae should be found in similar
galactic environments. Here we show that this expectation is wrong. We find
that the long gamma-ray bursts are far more concentrated on the very brightest
regions of their host galaxies than are the core-collapse supernovae.
Furthermore, the host galaxies of the long gamma-ray bursts are significantly
fainter and more irregular than the hosts of the core-collapse supernovae.
Together these results suggest that long-duration gamma-ray bursts are
associated with the most massive stars and may be restricted to galaxies of
limited chemical evolution. Our results directly imply that long gamma-ray

Ferritins: furnishing proteins with iron
Ferritins are a superfamily of iron oxidation, storage and mineralization proteins found throughout the animal, plant, and microbial kingdoms. The majority of ferritins consist of 24 subunits that individually fold into 4-α-helix bundles and assemble in a highly symmetric manner to form an approximately spherical protein coat around a central cavity into which an iron-containing mineral can be formed. Channels through the coat at inter-subunit contact points facilitate passage of iron ions to and from the central cavity, and intrasubunit catalytic sites, called ferroxidase centers, drive Fe2+ oxidation and O2 reduction. Though the different members of the superfamily share a common structure, there is often little amino acid sequence identity between them. Even where there is a high degree of sequence identity between two ferritins there can be major differences in how the proteins handle iron. In this review we describe some of the important structural features of ferritins and their mineralized iron cores and examine in detail how three selected ferritins oxidise Fe2+ in order to explore the mechanistic variations that exist amongst ferritins. We suggest that the mechanistic differences reflect differing evolutionary pressures on amino acid sequences, and that these differing pressures are a consequence of different primary functions for different ferritins
High morbid-mortability and reduced level of osteoporosis diagnosis among elderly people who had hip fractures in São Paulo City
OBJECTIVE: To know the morbid-mortality following an osteoporotic hip fracture in elderly patients living in São Paulo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study evaluated prospectively all patient over 60 years admitted in 2 school-hospitals in the city of São Paulo in a following 6-month period due to a osteoporotic proximal femur fracture. All of them filled up the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and had their chart reviewed. After 6 months they were re-interviewed. Linear regression analysis was utilized to determine the factors related to functional ability. RESULTS: 56 patients were included (mean age 80.7 ± 7.9 years old, 80.4% females). After the 6-month follow up the mortality rate was 23.2%. Only 30% of the patients returned to their previous activities, and 11.6% became totally dependent. Factors related to worse functional ability after fracture were HAQ before fracture, institutionalization after fracture and age (r² 0.482). The diagnosis of osteoporosis was informed only by 13.9% of them, and just 11.6% received any treatment for that. CONCLUSION: Our results showed the great impact of these fractures on mortality and in the functional ability of these patients. Nevertheless, many of our physicians do not inform the patients about the diagnosis of osteoporosis and, consequently, the treatment of this condition is jeopardized.As fraturas osteoporóticas de fêmur proximal trazem graves conseqüências quanto à morbimortalidade e à qualidade de vida, mas desconhece-se este impacto no Brasil. OBJETIVO: Conhecer a morbimortalidade decorrente deste tipo de fraturas em idosos na cidade de São Paulo. MÉTODOS: Foram incluídos todos os pacientes com mais de 60 anos internados por fraturas de fêmur proximal durante seis meses, em dois hospitais de São Paulo. Os pacientes preencheram o questionário de capacidade funcional (HAQ), tiveram seu prontuário examinado e foram reavaliados após seis meses. Utilizou-se a análise de regressão linear para determinar os fatores relacionados à capacidade funcional. RESULTADOS: Cinqüenta e seis pacientes foram incluídos no estudo (80,7 ± 7,9 anos; 80,4% mulheres). A mortalidade em seis meses foi de 23,2%. Apenas 30% retornaram plenamente às suas atividades prévias e 11,6% tornaram-se completamente dependentes. Os fatores que mais bem conseguiram prever pior capacidade funcional após a fratura foram HAQ pré-fratura, institucionalização pós-fratura e idade (r² 0,482). Somente 13,9% receberam o diagnóstico de osteoporose e 11,6% iniciaram algum tratamento. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados do presente estudo demonstram o impacto deste tipo de fraturas sobre a mortalidade e a capacidade funcional. Rare germline variants in DNA repair genes and the angiogenesis pathway predispose prostate cancer patients to develop metastatic disease
Background
Prostate cancer (PrCa) demonstrates a heterogeneous clinical presentation ranging from largely indolent to lethal. We sought to identify a signature of rare inherited variants that distinguishes between these two extreme phenotypes.
Methods
We sequenced germline whole exomes from 139 aggressive (metastatic, age of diagnosis < 60) and 141 non-aggressive (low clinical grade, age of diagnosis ≥60) PrCa cases. We conducted rare variant association analyses at gene and gene set levels using SKAT and Bayesian risk index techniques. GO term enrichment analysis was performed for genes with the highest differential burden of rare disruptive variants.
Results
Protein truncating variants (PTVs) in specific DNA repair genes were significantly overrepresented among patients with the aggressive phenotype, with BRCA2, ATM and NBN the most frequently mutated genes. Differential burden of rare variants was identified between metastatic and non-aggressive cases for several genes implicated in angiogenesis, conferring both deleterious and protective effects.
Conclusions
Inherited PTVs in several DNA repair genes distinguish aggressive from non-aggressive PrCa cases. Furthermore, inherited variants in genes with roles in angiogenesis may be potential predictors for risk of metastases. If validated in a larger dataset, these findings have potential for future clinical application
