Solitary Peutz-Jeghers Polyp in a Paediatric Patient
Hamartomatous polyps of Peutz-Jeghers are mostly found in patients affected by Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), but they can be rarely encountered in the general population. It is unclear whether a solitary Peutz-Jeghers polyp (PJP) is an incomplete form of PJS or a separate entity. We report a case of solitary PJP in a paediatric patient in whom the other features of PJS were absent. The patient underwent laparotomy due to small bowel intussusception secondary to an ileac polyp. Histological examination showed the characteristic features of PJP, but the patient did not fulfill the WHO criteria for PJS diagnosis (negative family history for PJS and absence of mucocutaneous pigmentation); moreover analysis of the STK11/LKB1 gene did not reveal any genomic abnormality. The clinical and investigative findings in our case suggest that the solitary PJP can be considered a different clinical entity from PJS
Energy homeostasis in rabbit does during pregnancy and pseudopregnancy
This study was conducted to evaluate the changing concentrations of metabolic hormones and metabolites in pregnant (P) and pseudopregnant (PP) rabbit does. Twenty-five New Zealand White rabbit does were submitted to artificial insemination (AI) and then classified as P (n = 15) or PP (n = 10). Blood samples were collected weekly until day 32 post AI. During pregnancy, leptin concentrations were greater on Days 14 and 21 (P < 0.05), while insulin was greater on days 21 and 32 post AI (P < 0.05) compared to PP does. The triiodothyronine/thyroxine (T3/T4) ratio was greater in the first and last week (P < 0.001); whereas, cortisol concentrations were greater in the last week of pregnancy and after parturition (P < 0.01) compared with that of PP does. Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentrations increased from day 7 until day 32 post AI (P < 0.05). Glucose concentrations were unchanged throughout pregnancy although concentrations were positively associated with litter size. These results indicate concentrations of hormones and metabolites change during pregnancy to ensure energy requirements are met for both the foetuses and the maternal tissues. Physiological hyperleptinemia, hyperinsulinemia, and changes in cortisol as well as thyroid hormones indicate there is an adaptation of metabolic functions induced by pregnancy. These adaptations could be mediated by gonadal steroids because changes mainly occur in the second half of pregnancy when the profile of the sex hormones differs between P and PP does
Approaches to Identify Pregnancy Failure in Buffalo Cows
Simple SummaryEmbryonic mortality and pregnancy failures still represent a major issue in domestic livestock production, particularly in dairy cattle. Despite the presence of extensive work in this research area, there is still no effective, accurate and practical method able to determine timing and viability of embryo specifically during early gestation. Indeed, technologies and techniques for predicting pregnancy success must continue to be developed. The aim of this work was to find the best strategy to diagnose pregnancy failures in buffalo cows in order to improve farm reproductive management. Among the methods compared in this study (ultrasonography, progesterone, PAGs), pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) seem to be the best marker for predicting embryonic mortality between 25 and 40 days of gestation to be utilized as a diagnostic tool to improve reproductive management in buffalo farms.The aim of this work was to find the best strategy to diagnose pregnancy failures in buffalo. A total of 109 animals belonging to a buffalo herd subjected to a synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) program were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were collected at days 0, 14, 25, 28 and 40 after AI for the determination of progesterone (P4) and pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) by the radioimmunoassay (RIA) method. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed on day 25, 28 and 40 after AI to monitor pregnancy. The animals included in the data analysis were assigned ex post in pregnant (n = 50) and mortality (n = 12) groups. By ultrasonography, the predictive sign of mortality was the heartbeat. At day 25, the PAGs concentration was significant in predicting embryonic mortality with respect to ultrasonography and P4, at the cut-off of 1.1 ng/mL. At day 28, either PAGs, at a cut-off of 2.2 ng/mL, or ultrasonography, with no detection of heartbeat, were highly predictive of embryonic mortality. PAGs were the best marker (p < 0.05) for predicting embryonic mortality between 25 and 40 days of gestation in buffalo. Its utilization as a diagnostic tool can influence management decisions in order to improve farm reproductive management
Using Big Data Technologies for HEP Analysis
The HEP community is approaching an era were the excellent performances of
the particle accelerators in delivering collision at high rate will force the
experiments to record a large amount of information. The growing size of the
datasets could potentially become a limiting factor in the capability to
produce scientific results timely and efficiently. Recently, new technologies
and new approaches have been developed in industry to answer to the necessity
to retrieve information as quickly as possible to analyze PB and EB datasets.
Providing the scientists with these modern computing tools will lead to
rethinking the principles of data analysis in HEP, making the overall
scientific process faster and smoother.
In this paper, we are presenting the latest developments and the most recent
results on the usage of Apache Spark for HEP analysis. The study aims at
evaluating the efficiency of the application of the new tools both
quantitatively, by measuring the performances, and qualitatively, focusing on
the user experience. The first goal is achieved by developing a data reduction
facility: working together with CERN Openlab and Intel, CMS replicates a real
physics search using Spark-based technologies, with the ambition of reducing 1
PB of public data in 5 hours, collected by the CMS experiment, to 1 TB of data
in a format suitable for physics analysis.
The second goal is achieved by implementing multiple physics use-cases in
Apache Spark using as input preprocessed datasets derived from official CMS
data and simulation. By performing different end-analyses up to the publication
plots on different hardware, feasibility, usability and portability are
compared to the ones of a traditional ROOT-based workflow
Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pediatric obesity: consensus position statement of the Italian Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology and the Italian Society of Pediatrics
The Italian Consensus Position Statement on Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents integrates and updates the previous guidelines to deliver an evidence based approach to the disease. The following areas were reviewed: (1) obesity definition and causes of secondary obesity; (2) physical and psychosocial comorbidities; (3) treatment and care settings; (4) prevention.The main novelties deriving from the Italian experience lie in the definition, screening of the cardiometabolic and hepatic risk factors and the endorsement of a staged approach to treatment. The evidence based efficacy of behavioral intervention versus pharmacological or surgical treatments is reported. Lastly, the prevention by promoting healthful diet, physical activity, sleep pattern, and environment is strongly recommended since the intrauterine phase
A Roadmap for HEP Software and Computing R&D for the 2020s
Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.Peer reviewe
Deep traps in Beta-rhombohedral boron
The activation energy of deep traps was studied in a series of beta-rhombohedral boron samples taken from different companies and labs. The presence of deep traps in some samples induces polarization effects in transient photoconductivity experiments. The activation energy of these deep traps, determined by thermally stimulated depolarization-current measurements, is (0.45 ± 0.03) eV in agreement with results previously obtained by other authors using various techniques. The apparent absence of these deep traps in some samples shows that they are not associated. with the complex lattice structure of beta-rhombohedral boron, as suggested by some authors
Purification of pregnancy-associated glycoproteins from late-pregnancy Bubalus bubalis placentas and development of a radioimmunoassay for pregnancy diagnosis in water buffalo females.
BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) were first described as placental antigens present in the blood serum of the mother soon after implantation. Here, we describe the purification of several pregnancy-associated glycoproteins from water buffalo placenta (wbPAGs). A specific radioimmunoassay (RIA) was developed for early pregnancy diagnosis in buffalo species. RESULTS: Amino-terminal microsequencing of immunoreactive placental proteins allowed the identification of eleven wbPAGs sequences [Swiss-Prot accession numbers: P86369 to P86379]. Three polyclonal antisera (AS#858, AS#859 and AS#860) were raised in rabbits against distinct wbPAG fractions. A new RIA (RIA-860) was developed and used to distinguish between pregnant (n = 33) and non-pregnant (n = 26) water buffalo females. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirmed the multiplicity of PAG expression in buffalo placenta. In addition, the RIA-860 system was shown to be sensitive, linear, reproducible, accurate and specific in measuring PAG concentrations in buffalo plasma samples from Day 37 of gestation onwards
Investigation on the charge collection properties of a 4H-SiC Schottky diode detector
We present experimental and theoretical data on the charge collection properties of a 4H-SiC epitaxial Schottky diode exposed to 5.48- and 2.00-MeV alpha particles. Hundred percent Charge Collection Efficiency (CCE) is, in particular, demonstrated for the 2.00-MeV alpha particles at reverse voltages higher than 40 V. By comparing measured CCE values with the outcomes of drift-diffusion simulations, a value of 500 ns is inferred for the hole lifetime within the lowly doped, active layer of virgin samples. The contributions of diffusion and funneling-assisted drift to CCE at low reverse voltages are pointed out
Epitaxial silicon carbide charge particle detectors
The radiation detection properties of Schottky detectors made on epitaxial layers of 4H silicon carbide were evaluated. Exposure to 5.48 MeV alpha particles from a Am-241 source in vacumn led to robust signals from the detectors.
