Diffusion over a saddle with a Langevin equation

    Get PDF
The diffusion problem over a saddle is studied using a multi-dimensional Langevin equation. An analytical solution is derived for a quadratic potential and the probability to pass over the barrier deduced. A very simple solution is given for the one dimension problem and a general scheme is shown for higher dimensions.Comment: 13 pages, use revTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev. E6

Implementing the LPM effect in a parton cascade model

Parton Cascade Models (PCM), which describe the full time-evolution of a system of quarks and gluons using pQCD interactions are ideally suited for the description of jet production, including the emission, evolution and energy-loss of the full parton shower in a hot and dense QCD medium. The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect, the quantum interference of parton wave functions due to repeated scatterings against the background medium, is likely the dominant in-medium effect affecting jet suppression. We have implemented a probabilistic implementation of the LPM effect within the PCM which can be validated against previously derived analytical calculations by Baier et al (BDMPS-Z). Hadronic observables from SIS to SPS energies - anything strange with strangeness ?

    Get PDF
We calculate p,π±,K±p, \pi^\pm, K^\pm and Λ\Lambda(+Σ0\Sigma^0) rapidity distributions and compare to experimental data from SIS to SPS energies within the UrQMD and HSD transport approaches that are both based on string, quark, diquark (q,qˉ,qq,qˉqˉq, \bar{q}, qq, \bar{q}\bar{q}) and hadronic degrees of freedom. The two transport models do not include any explicit phase transition to a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). It is found that both approaches agree rather well with each other and with the experimental rapidity distributions for protons, Λ\Lambda's, π±\pi^\pm and K±K^\pm. Inspite of this apparent agreement both transport models fail to reproduce the maximum in the excitation function for the ratio K+/π+K^+/\pi^+ found experimentally between 11 and 40 A\cdotGeV. A comparison to the various experimental data shows that this 'failure' is dominantly due to an insufficient description of pion rapidity distributions rather than missing 'strangeness'. The modest differences in the transport model results -- on the other hand -- can be attributed to different implementations of string formation and fragmentation, that are not sufficiently controlled by experimental data for the 'elementary' reactions in vacuum.Comment: 46 pages, including 15 eps figures, to be published in Phys. A model for net-baryon rapidity distribution

In nuclear collisions, a sizable fraction of the available energy is carried away by baryons. As the baryon number is conserved, the net-baryon BBˉB-\bar{B} retains information on the energy-momentum carried by the incoming nuclei. A simple and consistent model for net-baryon production in high energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented. The basic ingredients of the model are valence string formation based on standard PDFs with QCD evolution and string fragmentation via the Schwinger mechanism. The results of the model are presented and compared with data at different centre-of-mass energies and centralities, as well as with existing models. These results show that a good description of the main features of net-baryon data is possible in the framework of a simplistic model, with the advantage of making the fundamental production mechanisms manifest.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures; in fig. 11 a) the vertical scale was correcte

Charged particle densities from Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=130 GeV

We present charged particle densities as a function of pseudorapidity and collision centrality for the 197Au+197Au reaction at sqrt{s_{NN}}=130 GeV. An integral charged particle multiplicity of 3860+/-300 is found for the 5% most central events within the pseudorapidity range -4.7 <= eta <= 4.7. At mid-rapidity an enhancement in the particle yields per participant nucleon pair is observed for central events. Near to the beam rapidity, a scaling of the particle yields consistent with the ``limiting fragmentation'' picture is observed. Our results are compared to other recent experimental and theoretical discussions of charged particle densities in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures; to be published in Phys. Realising the Olympic dream: vision, support and challenge

The sporting arena is replete with examples and anecdotes of great inspirational coaches that have led teams to success, often in the face of adversity and against seemingly better opponents. The role of the coach in developing and motivating athletes has also been the focus of much research in sport psychology (e.g., Challaduria 1990; Smith & Smoll, 2007). Despite the ease with which one readily accepts that coaches can be inspirational, the sport coaching literature is somewhat devoid of research on inspirational coaches and the effects of such coaches on athletic success. The purpose of the current paper is to theoretically delineate the inspirational effects of coaches in sport. Given the relative paucity of inspiration-related research in sport we draw upon contemporary theories of leadership from organisational and military psychology (e.g., transformational and charismatic leadership theories). We propose a sport-specific model of leadership that centres around the vision, support, and challenge meta-cognitive model developed by Arthur and Hardy in military contexts. The model posits that great coaches inspire their athletes by: (a) creating an inspirational vision of the future; (b) providing the necessary support to achieve the vision; and (c) providing the challenge to achieve the vision. The underlying proposition is that the vision provides meaning and direction for followers effort. That is, the vision serves as the beacon around which all the sweat, pain and sacrifice involved in achieving success at the highest level in sport is directed. At the heart of this model is the notion that athletes can achieve their dreams provided they are inspired to do so; this is because all other things being equal the person who is motivated to practice longer and train harder will ultimately be the best. The current paper will delineate the coachs role in inspiring the athlete to train harder and longer

Kaon and Pion Production in Central Au+Au Collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=62.4 GeV

Invariant pT spectra and rapidity densities covering a large rapidity range(-0.1 < y < 3.5) are presented for π±\pi^{\pm} and K±K^{\pm} mesons from central Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4 GeV. The mid-rapidity yields of meson particles relative to their anti-particles are found to be close to unity (π/π+1\pi^-/\pi^+ \sim 1, K/K+0.85K^-/K^+ \sim 0.85) while the anti-proton to proton ratio is pˉ/p0.49\bar{p}/p \sim 0.49. The rapidity dependence of the π/π+\pi^-/\pi^+ ratio is consistent with a small increase towards forward rapidities while the K/K+K^-/K^+ and pˉ/p\bar{p}/p ratios show a steep decrease to \sim 0.3 for kaons and 0.022 for protons at y3y\sim 3. It is observed that the kaon production relative to its own anti-particle as well as to pion production in wide rapidity and energy ranges shows an apparent universal behavior consistent with the baryo-chemical potential, as deduced from the pˉ/p\bar{p}/p ratio, being the driving parameter.Comment: Submitted to PLB, 6 journal pages, 7 figure

Representational predicaments for employees: Their impact on perceptions of supervisors\u27 individualized consideration and on employee job satisfaction

    Get PDF
A representational predicament for a subordinate vis-à-vis his or her immediate superior involves perceptual incongruence with the superior about the subordinate\u27s work or work context, with unfavourable implications for the employee. An instrument to measure the incidence of two types of representational predicament, being neglected and negative slanting, was developed and then validated through an initial survey of 327 employees. A subsequent substantive survey with a fresh sample of 330 employees largely supported a conceptual model linking being neglected and negative slanting to perceptions of low individualized consideration by superiors and to low overall job satisfaction. The respondents in both surveys were all Hong Kong Chinese. Two case examples drawn from qualitative interviews illustrate and support the conceptual model. Based on the research findings, we recommend some practical exercises to use in training interventions with leaders and subordinates. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

    Get PDF
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele
