    Light with tunable non-Markovian phase imprint

    We introduce a simple and flexible method to generate spatially non-Markovian light with tunable coherence properties in one and two dimensions. The unusual behavior of this light is demonstrated experimentally by probing the far field and recording its diffraction pattern after a double slit: In both cases we observe instead of a central intensity maximum a line or cross shaped dark region, whose width and profile depend on the non-Markovian coherence properties. Since these properties can be controlled and easily reproduced in experiment, the presented approach lends itself to serve as a testbed to gain a deeper understanding of non-Markovian processes

    ADICCIONES JUVENILES: ¿Delincuencia o enfermedad? Una mirada sociológica sobre la problemática

    En el ámbito científico persiste la discusión respecto a cómo abordar el complejo problema de las adicciones. Se cuestiona si se inscribe dentro un modelo biológico-médico, o si es un problema restrictivo del posicionamiento jurídico-represivo. Desde la primera perspectiva se considera al adicto como un enfermo, alguien cuya “…razón básica para empezar con el consumo de drogas o alcohol es conseguir placer…” (Beck, Wright, Newman, Cory, Liese, 1999: 45). Mientras que la segunda enfatiza la cuestión ético-jurídica, considerando al adicto un delincuente, donde las situaciones de pobreza y la exclusión son factores condicionantes pero no determinantes de la conducta delictiva. Ahora bien, el tema de las adicciones necesariamente conlleva implicancias sociales; por lo tanto, es relevante sumar a esos dos modelos, la mirada sobre la problemática desde una perspectiva sociológica. Ese posicionamiento permitiría analizar dicho fenómeno como un proceso histórico-social donde el contexto y una serie de condicionantes sociales, culturales, ambientales, familiares y los factores de la personalidad, predispondrían a ciertos grupos –jóvenes– a consumir sustancias psicoactivas, cuyos excesos y frecuencias denota a los adictos. El propósito del artículo consiste en enfocar, solamente como aporte teórico, la necesidad de incorporar la perspectiva sociológica. Se pretende como aspiración superar los posicionamientos antagónicos de los modelos jurídico-represivo y biológico-médico, y rescatar las implicancias socio-históricas, contextuales, familiares y personales que la problemática involucra. Aspectos que brindarían –se supone- brindaría sólidos fundamentos para la formulación de políticas públicas focalizadas en los adolescentes y jóvenes

    Brazilian Flora 2020: Leveraging the power of a collaborative scientific network

    The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiver sity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxo nomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world’s known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world’s most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend be yond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still un equally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the coun try. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora.Fil: Gomes da Silva, Janaina.     Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
