    Effects of the Integration of Mexico into NAFTA on Trade, Industry, Employment and Economic Growth

    We present a comparison of economic development in Mexico with some OECD countries (France, Spain and the USA) and Latin American countries (Brazil and Argentina) and we analyse the evolution of employment in Mexico, having into account the positive impact that industrial development has in non-agrarian employment and the effects of the integration into NAFTA on trade and industrial development. We present an econometric model to explain non agrarian employment depending on direct and indirect effects of industrial development, and relate these findings with other studies on the effects of integration. Although the impact of integration was in many aspects positive, it is clear that it is not enough to foster industrial investment at the level necessary to achieve high rates of non agrarian employment and development in many Mexican regions. On the other hand, the problem of the negative evolution of agrarian employment of Mexico during the last years of the 20th century was more due to the consequences of the evolution of international relative prices of Agriculture than to the direct effects of the integration into NAFTA, and it was common to other countries. The main conclusions point to recommend industrial investment, to focus on regional and rural development, to increase the number of non-agrarian jobs, not only in urban areas but also in rural ones, in order to avoid compulsory emigration, and to eradicate poverty. These complementary policies would amplify the positive impact of integration and they should include a reinforcement of the recent effort to increase public expenditure on education per inhabitant in order to foster the positive effects of education on development.

    Evaluation of Antiplatelet-Related Bleeding Events in a Community Hospital

    Background:Bleeding rate among patients who take high-dose aspirin is approximately 1.92% with an expected 2-3 fold increase after a second antiplatelet is added. Similarly, the addition of an anticoagulant to single or dual antiplatelet therapy results in increased bleeding rates of approximately 13.9% and 15.7% respectively. The concomitant use of antiplatelets and anticoagulants has become a common practice due to the high incidence of clinical conditions for which these agents are used. Hence, reversal of antithrombotic agents is often needed during major bleeding events or invasive procedures. However, the use of antiplatelet reversal is still under-utilized, and its efficacy on patient outcomes remains to be tested. The purpose of this project is to assess the incidence of bleeding, reversal strategies, mortality rates, and thrombotic events in patients with a major bleeding event receiving antiplatelets with or without concomitant anticoagulants. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted over a one-year period. Patients 18 years and older taking an antiplatelet excluding low dose aspirin alone at the time of the major bleeding event were included in the study. A major bleeding event was defined as bleeding into a critical area/organ, fall in hemoglobin of ≥ 20 g/L, or transfusion of \u3e 2 units of blood. Subjects were divided into two groups: intracranial and non-intracranial hemorrhage. Patient outcomes will be analyzed based on bleeding severity, causative agents, and reversal strategies utilized. Results: We identified 21 patients with ICH and 38 with Non-ICH. Bleeding rates among patients who had a major bleeding event were as follows: 12.4% of patients on antiplatelet therapy, 2.4% on APT monotherapy, 5.4% on DAPT, and 4% on APT plus an anticoagulant. A reversal strategy was utilized 68% of the time for the reversal of antiplatelets in the setting of an ICH compared to 18% in the Non-ICH group. Our findings suggest that mortality, readmission, and thrombotic events are not affected by bleeding severity or reversal strategy utilized. Discussion: Antiplatelet therapy with or without anticoagulation could increase the risk for a major bleeding event. At Baptist Hospital of Miami, antiplatelet reversal is conducted in accordance with current societal guideline recommendations. However, there is opportunity for improvement in the reversal of antiplatelet agents when utilized concomitantly with an anticoagulant

    Beyond Prejudice as Simple Antipathy: Hostile and Benevolent Sexism Across Cultures

    The authors argue that complementary hostile and benevolent componen:s of sexism exist ac ro.ss cultures. Male dominance creates hostile sexism (HS). but men's dependence on women fosters benevolent sexism (BS)-subjectively positive attitudes that put women on a pedestal but reinforce their subordination. Research with 15,000 men and women in 19 nations showed that (a) HS and BS are coherenl constructs th at correlate positively across nations, but (b) HS predicts the ascription of negative and BS the ascription of positive traits to women, (c) relative to men, women are more likely to reject HS than BS. especially when overall levels of sexism in a culture are high, and (d) national averages on BS and HS predict gender inequal ity across nations. These results challenge prevailing notions of prejudice as an antipathy in that BS (an affectionate, patronizing ideology) reflects inequality and is a cross-culturally pervasive complement to HS

    Identification of a novel synthetic lethal vulnerability in non-small cell lung cancer by co-targeting TMPRSS4 and DDR1

    Finding novel targets in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is highly needed and identification of synthetic lethality between two genes is a new approach to target NSCLC. We previously found that TMPRSS4 promotes NSCLC growth and constitutes a prognostic biomarker. Here, through large-scale analyses across 5 public databases we identified consistent co-expression between TMPRSS4 and DDR1. Similar to TMPRSS4, DDR1 promoter was hypomethylated in NSCLC in 3 independent cohorts and hypomethylation was an independent prognostic factor of disease-free survival. Treatment with 5-azacitidine increased DDR1 levels in cell lines, suggesting an epigenetic regulation. Cells lacking TMPRSS4 were highly sensitive to the cytotoxic effect of the DDR1 inhibitor dasatinib. TMPRSS4/DDR1 double knock-down (KD) cells, but not single KD cells suffered a G0/G1 cell cycle arrest with loss of E2F1 and cyclins A and B, increased p21 levels and a larger number of cells in apoptosis. Moreover, double KD cells were highly sensitized to cisplatin, which caused massive apoptosis (~40%). In vivo studies demonstrated tumor regression in double KD-injected mice. In conclusion, we have identified a novel vulnerability in NSCLC resulting from a synthetic lethal interaction between DDR1 and TMPRSS4

    Application of at-line two-dimensional liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry for identification of small hydrophilic angiotensin I-inhibiting peptides in milk hydrolysates

    A two-dimensional chromatographic method with mass spectrometric detection has been developed for identification of small, hydrophilic angiotensin I-inhibiting peptides in enzymatically hydrolysed milk proteins. The method involves the further separation of the poorly retained hydrophilic fraction from a standard C18 reversed-phase column on a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) column. The latter column is specifically designed for the separation of hydrophilic compounds. Narrow fractions collected from the HILIC column were analysed for their angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibiting potential in an at-line assay. Fractions showing significant inhibition of ACE were analysed by LC–MS for structure elucidation. With this method the main peptides responsible for ACE-inhibition in the hydrophilic part of a milk hydrolysate could be determined. The ACE-inhibiting peptides RP, AP, VK, EK, and EW explained more than 85% of ACE-inhibition by the hydrophilic fraction

    Is IRAS 01072+4954 a True-Seyfert 2? Hints from Near Infrared Integral Field Spectroscopy

    In contrast to the predictions of the unified model, some X-ray unobscured Seyfert 2 galaxies have been discovered in the last decade. One of them, the starburst/Seyfert composite galaxy IRAS 01072+4954 (z=0.0236), has a typical Type~1 X-ray emission, while its optical spectrum resembles an HII galaxy and lacks the expected broad lines. We performed near-infrared integral-field observations of this object with the aim to determine the nature of its nuclear emission and to find indications for the existence or absence of a broad-line region. Several reasons have been proposed to explain such peculiar emission. We studied the validity of such hypotheses, including the possibility for it to be True-Seyfert~2. We found little obscuration towards the nucleus A_V = 2.5 mag, and a nuclear star-formation rate Sigma_SFR < 11.6 Msun yr^{-1} kpc^{-2}, which is below the average in Seyferts. Unresolved hot-dust emission with T ~ 1150 K seems to indicate the presence of a torus with its axis close to the line of sight. We found that IRAS 01072+4954 hosts a low mass black hole with an estimated mass of M_BH ~ 10^5 Msun and an upper limit of 2.5x10^6 Msun. Its bolometric luminosity is L_bol ~ 2.5x10^{42} erg/s, which yields a high accretion rate with an Eddington ratio ~ 0.2. If the relations found in more massive systems also apply to this case, then IRAS 01072+4954 should show broad emission lines with FWHM_{broad} ~(400-600) km/s. Indeed, some indications for such narrow broad-line components are seen in our data, but the evidence is not yet conclusive. This source thus seems not to be a True-Seyfert 2, but an extreme case of a narrow line Seyfert 1, which, due to the faintness of the active nucleus, does not have strong FeII emission in the optical.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures.     Integrated Analysis of Germline and Tumor DNA Identifies New Candidate Genes Involved in Familial Colorectal Cancer

    Colorectal cancer (CRC) shows aggregation in some families but no alterations in the known hereditary CRC genes. We aimed to identify new candidate genes which are potentially involved in germline predisposition to familial CRC. An integrated analysis of germline and tumor whole-exome sequencing data was performed in 18 unrelated CRC families. Deleterious single nucleotide variants (SNV), short insertions and deletions (indels), copy number variants (CNVs) and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) were assessed as candidates for first germline or second somatic hits. Candidate tumor suppressor genes were selected when alterations were detected in both germline and somatic DNA, fulfilling Knudson's two-hit hypothesis. Somatic mutational profiling and signature analysis were also performed. A series of germline-somatic variant pairs were detected. In all cases, the first hit was presented as a rare SNV/indel, whereas the second hit was either a different SNV (3 genes) or LOH affecting the same gene (141 genes). BRCA2, BLM, ERCC2, RECQL, REV3L and RIF1 were among the most promising candidate genes for germline CRC predisposition. The identification of new candidate genes involved in familial CRC could be achieved by our integrated analysis. Further functional studies and replication in additional cohorts are required to confirm the selected candidates

    Immune reconstitution disease associated with parasitic infections following antiretroviral treatment

    HIV-associated immune reconstitution disease (IRD) is the clinical presentation or deterioration of opportunistic infections that results from enhancement of pathogen-specific immune responses among patients responding to antiretroviral treatment (ART). The vast majority of reported cases of IRD have been associated with mycobacterial, chronic viral and invasive fungal infections; such cases result from dysregulated augmentation of cell-mediated type 1 cytokine-secreting host immune responses. However, the spectrum of infections now recognized as associated with IRD is expanding and includes a number of parasitic infections, which may be mediated by different immunopathological mechanisms. These include leishmaniasis (visceral, cutaneous, mucosal and post kala azar dermal leishmaniasis), schistosomiasis and strongyloidiasis. Since the major burden of HIV lies in resource-limited countries where access to ART is now rapidly expanding, increased awareness and knowledge of these phenomena is important. Here we review the clinical spectrum and pathogenesis of IRD associated with parasitic infections
