Toward a Renewal of Supervisory Scholarship and Practice in Teacher Education: A Collaborative Self-Study
University supervision of teacher candidates is a well-recognized component of teacher preparation. However, teacher education has long devalued supervision, largely relying upon retired teachers, administrators, and graduate students to serve as supervisors, often with little training or support. Although clinical practice has received increased focus among accrediting bodies, supervision as a field of scholarship and practice continues to receive little support within institutions or attention in teacher education. As supervision practitioners and scholars, the three authors engaged in collaborative self-study, sharing and interrogating professional autobiographies and narratives related to supervision, to make sense of institutional and professional contexts and to interrogate the tensions of practice and legitimacy surrounding supervision in teacher education. Together, we acknowledged the complexity of supervision, challenged dominant narratives of supervision institutionally and professionally, and constructed new spaces of supervisory practice and learning. Learning from our experiences, teacher educators can better understand how to prepare and support future supervision scholars and practitioners
Open to All: Administrators’ and Teachers’ Perceptions of Issues of Equity and Diversity in Teacher Leadership
This study is a response to calls for more research on diversity in teacher leadership (TL), particularly in urban schools. Critical race theory illuminated the role race and racism can play in determining who gets access to TL positions and how that access is characterized using liberal discourse and ideology. We used a component mixed methods design to explore whether administrators and teachers perceived that teacher leadership positions were open to everyone. Beliefs that TL opportunities are “open to all” allow the field to accept the status quo, making it difficult to see (or do anything about) racial inequities
Creating a “Third Space” in Student Teaching: Implications for the University Supervisor’s Status as Outsider
The work of teacher education during student teaching typically takes place in two distinct “spaces”: placement sites and college/university settings. The program featured in this article is structured in ways that clearly mark out those two spaces. Yet this configuration led our university supervisors, whose work primarily took place in the field, to feel like “outsiders.” To redress this concern, a third learning space was incorporated into our student teaching seminar. We suggest that “third spaces” in combination with return-to-campus courses not only mitigates the peripherality of university supervisors but also amplifies the influence of a teacher preparation program
Variability selected high-redshift quasars on SDSS Stripe 82
The SDSS-III BOSS Quasar survey will attempt to observe z>2.15 quasars at a
density of at least 15 per square degree to yield the first measurement of the
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations in the Ly-alpha forest. To help reaching this
goal, we have developed a method to identify quasars based on their variability
in the u g r i z optical bands. The method has been applied to the selection of
quasar targets in the SDSS region known as Stripe 82 (the Southern equatorial
stripe), where numerous photometric observations are available over a 10-year
baseline. This area was observed by BOSS during September and October 2010.
Only 8% of the objects selected via variability are not quasars, while 90% of
the previously identified high-redshift quasar population is recovered. The
method allows for a significant increase in the z>2.15 quasar density over
previous strategies based on optical (ugriz) colors, achieving a density of
24.0 deg^{-2} on average down to g~22 over the 220 deg^2 area of Stripe 82. We
applied this method to simulated data from the Palomar Transient Factory and
from Pan-STARRS, and showed that even with data that have sparser time sampling
than what is available in Stripe 82, including variability in future quasar
selection strategies would lead to increased target selection efficiency in the
z>2.15 redshift range. We also found that Broad Absorption Line quasars are
preferentially present in a variability than in a color selection.Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Constraints on the Progenitor System of the Type Ia Supernova SN 2011fe/PTF11kly
Type Ia supernovae (SNe) serve as a fundamental pillar of modern cosmology,
owing to their large luminosity and a well-defined relationship between
light-curve shape and peak brightness. The precision distance measurements
enabled by SNe Ia first revealed the accelerating expansion of the universe,
now widely believed (though hardly understood) to require the presence of a
mysterious "dark" energy. General consensus holds that Type Ia SNe result from
thermonuclear explosions of a white dwarf (WD) in a binary system; however,
little is known of the precise nature of the companion star and the physical
properties of the progenitor system. Here we make use of extensive historical
imaging obtained at the location of SN 2011fe/PTF11kly, the closest SN Ia
discovered in the digital imaging era, to constrain the visible-light
luminosity of the progenitor to be 10-100 times fainter than previous limits on
other SN Ia progenitors. This directly rules out luminous red giants and the
vast majority of helium stars as the mass-donating companion to the exploding
white dwarf. Any evolved red companion must have been born with mass less than
3.5 times the mass of the Sun. These observations favour a scenario where the
exploding WD of SN 2011fe/PTF11kly, accreted matter either from another WD, or
by Roche-lobe overflow from a subgiant or main-sequence companion star.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, submitte
Improved Standardization of Type II-P Supernovae: Application to an Expanded Sample
In the epoch of precise and accurate cosmology, cross-confirmation using a
variety of cosmographic methods is paramount to circumvent systematic
uncertainties. Owing to progenitor histories and explosion physics differing
from those of Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia), Type II-plateau supernovae (SNe II-P) are
unlikely to be affected by evolution in the same way. Based on a new analysis
of 17 SNe II-P, and on an improved methodology, we find that SNe II-P are good
standardizable candles, almost comparable to SNe Ia. We derive a tight Hubble
diagram with a dispersion of 10% in distance, using the simple correlation
between luminosity and photospheric velocity introduced by Hamuy & Pinto 2002.
We show that the descendent method of Nugent et al. 2006 can be further
simplified and that the correction for dust extinction has low statistical
impact. We find that our SN sample favors, on average, a very steep dust law
with total to selective extinction R_V<2. Such an extinction law has been
recently inferred for many SNe Ia. Our results indicate that a distance
measurement can be obtained with a single spectrum of a SN II-P during the
plateau phase combined with sparse photometric measurements.Comment: ApJ accepted version. Minor change

Chemical vapour deposition synthetic diamond: materials, technology and applications
Substantial developments have been achieved in the synthesis of chemical
vapour deposition (CVD) diamond in recent years, providing engineers and
designers with access to a large range of new diamond materials. CVD diamond
has a number of outstanding material properties that can enable exceptional
performance in applications as diverse as medical diagnostics, water treatment,
radiation detection, high power electronics, consumer audio, magnetometry and
novel lasers. Often the material is synthesized in planar form, however
non-planar geometries are also possible and enable a number of key
applications. This article reviews the material properties and characteristics
of single crystal and polycrystalline CVD diamond, and how these can be
utilized, focusing particularly on optics, electronics and electrochemistry. It
also summarizes how CVD diamond can be tailored for specific applications,
based on the ability to synthesize a consistent and engineered high performance
product.Comment: 51 pages, 16 figure
