    The distance and neutral environment of the massive stellar cluster Westerlund 1

    The goal of this study is to determine a distance to Westerlund 1 independent of the characteristics of the stellar population and to study its neutral environment, using observations of atomic hydrogen. The HI observations are taken from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey to study HI absorption in the direction of the HII region created by the members of Westerlund 1 and to investigate its environment as observed in the HI line emission. A Galactic rotation curve was derived using the recently revised values for the Galactic centre distance of R⊙=7.6R_\odot = 7.6 kpc, and the velocity of the Sun around the Galactic centre of Θ⊙=214\Theta_\odot = 214 km s−1^{-1}. The newly determined rotation model leads us to derive a distance of 3.9±0.73.9\pm 0.7 kpc to Westerlund 1, consistent with a location in the Scutum-Crux Arm. Included in this estimate is a very careful investigation of possible sources of error for the Galactic rotation curve. We also report on small expanding HI features around the cluster with a maximum dynamic age of 600,000 years and a larger bubble which has a minimum dynamic age of 2.5 million years. Additionally we re-calculated the kinematic distances to nearby HII regions and supernova remnants based on our new Galaxic rotation curve. We propose that in the early stages of the development of Wd 1 a large interstellar bubble of diameter about 50 pc was created by the cluster members. This bubble has a dynamic age similar to the age of the cluster. Small expanding bubbles, with dynamical ages ∼0.6\sim 0.6 Myr are found around Wd 1, which we suggest consist of recombined material lost by cluster members through their winds.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in A&

    The JCMT 12CO(3-2) Survey of the Cygnus X Region: I. A Pathfinder

    Cygnus X is one of the most complex areas in the sky. This complicates interpretation, but also creates the opportunity to investigate accretion into molecular clouds and many subsequent stages of star formation, all within one small field of view. Understanding large complexes like Cygnus X is the key to understanding the dominant role that massive star complexes play in galaxies across the Universe. The main goal of this study is to establish feasibility of a high-resolution CO survey of the entire Cygnus X region by observing part of it as a Pathfinder, and to evaluate the survey as a tool for investigating the star-formation process. A 2x4 degree area of the Cygnus X region has been mapped in the 12CO(3-2) line at an angular resolution of 15" and a velocity resolution of ~0.4km/s using HARP-B and ACSIS on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The star formation process is heavily connected to the life-cycle of the molecular material in the interstellar medium. The high critical density of the 12CO(3-2) transition reveals clouds in key stages of molecule formation, and shows processes that turn a molecular cloud into a star. We observed ~15% of Cygnus X, and demonstrated that a full survey would be feasible and rewarding. We detected three distinct layers of 12CO(3-2) emission, related to the Cygnus Rift (500-800 pc), to W75N (1-1.8 kpc), and to DR21 (1.5-2.5 kpc). Within the Cygnus Rift, HI self-absorption features are tightly correlated with faint diffuse CO emission, while HISA features in the DR21 layer are mostly unrelated to any CO emission. 47 molecular outflows were detected in the Pathfinder, 27 of them previously unknown.     VdBH 222: a starburst cluster in the inner Milky Way

    Context. It has been suggested that the compact open cluster VdBH 222 is a young massive distant object.Aims. We set out to characterise VdBH 222 using a comprehensive set of multi-wavelength observations.Methods.We obtained multi-band optical (UBVR) and near-infrared (JHKS) photometry of the cluster field, as well as multi-object and long-slit optical spectroscopy for a large sample of stars in the field. We applied classical photometric analysis, as well as more sophisticated methods using the CHORIZOS code, to determine the reddening to the cluster. We then plotted dereddened HR diagrams and determined cluster parameters via isochrone fitting.Results. We have identified a large population of luminous supergiants confirmed as cluster members via radial velocity measurements. We find nine red supergiants (plus one other candidate) and two yellow supergiants. We also identify a large population of OB stars. Ten of them are bright enough to be blue supergiants. The cluster lies behind ≈7.5 mag of extinction for the preferred value of RV = 2.9. Isochrone fitting allows for a narrow range of ages between 12 and 16 Ma. The cluster radial velocity is compatible with distances of ~6 and ~10 kpc. The shorter distance is inconsistent with the age range and Galactic structure. The longer distance implies an age ≈ 12 Ma and a location not far from the position where some Galactic models place the far end of the Galactic bar.Conclusions. VdBH 222 is a young massive cluster with a likely mass >20 000 M⊙. Its population of massive evolved stars is comparable to that of large associations, such as Per OB1. Its location in the inner Galaxy, presumably close to the end of the Galactic bar, adds to the increasing evidence for vigorous star formation in the inner regions of the Milky Way

    Comparison of techniques for handling missing covariate data within prognostic modelling studies: a simulation study

    Background: There is no consensus on the most appropriate approach to handle missing covariate data within prognostic modelling studies. Therefore a simulation study was performed to assess the effects of different missing data techniques on the performance of a prognostic model. Methods: Datasets were generated to resemble the skewed distributions seen in a motivating breast cancer example. Multivariate missing data were imposed on four covariates using four different mechanisms; missing completely at random (MCAR), missing at random (MAR), missing not at random (MNAR) and a combination of all three mechanisms. Five amounts of incomplete cases from 5% to 75% were considered. Complete case analysis (CC), single imputation (SI) and five multiple imputation (MI) techniques available within the R statistical software were investigated: a) data augmentation (DA) approach assuming a multivariate normal distribution, b) DA assuming a general location model, c) regression switching imputation, d) regression switching with predictive mean matching (MICE-PMM) and e) flexible additive imputation models. A Cox proportional hazards model was fitted and appropriate estimates for the regression coefficients and model performance measures were obtained. Results: Performing a CC analysis produced unbiased regression estimates, but inflated standard errors, which affected the significance of the covariates in the model with 25% or more missingness. Using SI, underestimated the variability; resulting in poor coverage even with 10% missingness. Of the MI approaches, applying MICE-PMM produced, in general, the least biased estimates and better coverage for the incomplete covariates and better model performance for all mechanisms. However, this MI approach still produced biased regression coefficient estimates for the incomplete skewed continuous covariates when 50% or more cases had missing data imposed with a MCAR, MAR or combined mechanism. When the missingness depended on the incomplete covariates, i.e. MNAR, estimates were biased with more than 10% incomplete cases for all MI approaches. Conclusion: The results from this simulation study suggest that performing MICE-PMM may be the preferred MI approach provided that less than 50% of the cases have missing data and the missing data are not MNAR

    Butyltin compounds in a sediment core from the old Tilbury basin, London, UK

    Sections from a sediment core taken from the River Thames were analysed for butyltin species using gas chromatography with species-specific isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Results demonstrated that in most samples tributyltin concentrations of 20–60 ng/g accounted for <10% of the total butyltin species present, which is in agreement with data from other sediment samples which were historically contaminated with tributyltin. Vertical distribution of the organotin residues with depth throughout the core, with data on organochlorine compounds and heavy metals allowed for the construction of a consistent hypothesis on historical deposition of contaminated sediments. From this it was possible to infer that the concentrations of tributyltin in sediments deposited during the early 1960s were in the order of 400–600 lg/g by using degradation rate constants derived by other workers. Such values fall well within the range quoted for harbour sediments in the literature

    Discovery of Pre-Treatment FDG PET/CT-Derived Radiomics-Based Models for Predicting Outcome in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma

    Background: Approximately 30% of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) will have recurrence. The aim of this study was to develop a radiomic based model derived from baseline PET/CT to predict 2-year event free survival (2-EFS). Methods: Patients with DLBCL treated with R-CHOP chemotherapy undergoing pre-treatment PET/CT between January 2008 and January 2018 were included. The dataset was split into training and internal unseen test sets (ratio 80:20). A logistic regression model using metabolic tumour volume (MTV) and six different machine learning classifiers created from clinical and radiomic features derived from the baseline PET/CT were trained and tuned using four-fold cross validation. The model with the highest mean validation receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve area under the curve (AUC) was tested on the unseen test set. Results: 229 DLBCL patients met the inclusion criteria with 62 (27%) having 2-EFS events. The training cohort had 183 patients with 46 patients in the unseen test cohort. The model with the highest mean validation AUC combined clinical and radiomic features in a ridge regression model with a mean validation AUC of 0.75 ± 0.06 and a test AUC of 0.73. Conclusions: Radiomics based models demonstrate promise in predicting outcomes in DLBCL patients

    Balance on the Brain: a randomised controlled trial evaluating the effect of a multimodal exercise programme on physical performance, falls, quality of life and cognition for people with mild cognitive impairment—study protocol

    Introduction: Exercise and physical activity have been shown to improve cognition for people living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). There is strong evidence for the benefits of aerobic exercise and medium evidence for participating in regular strength training for people with MCI. However, people living with MCI fall two times as often as those without cognitive impairment and the evidence is currently unknown as to whether balance training for people with MCI is beneficial, as has been demonstrated for older people without cognitive impairment. The aim of this study is to determine whether a balance-focused multimodal exercise intervention improves balance and reduces falls for people with MCI, compared with a control group receiving usual care. Methods and analysis: This single blind randomised controlled trial (Balance on the Brain) will be offered to 396 people with MCI living in the community. The multimodal exercise intervention consists of two balance programmes and a walking programme to be delivered by physiotherapists over a 6-month intervention period. All participants will be followed up over 12 months (for the intervention group, this involves 6-month intervention and 6-month maintenance). The primary outcomes are (1) balance performance and (2) rate of falls. Physical performance, levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour, quality of life and cognition are secondary outcomes. A health economic analysis will be undertaken to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the intervention compared with usual care. Ethics and dissemination: Ethics approval has been received from the South Metropolitan Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), Curtin University HREC and the Western Australia Department of Health HREC; and approval has been received to obtain data for health costings from Services Australia. The results will be disseminated through peer-review publications, conference presentations and online platforms

    LIGHTSITE II Randomized Multicenter Trial: Evaluation of Multiwavelength Photobiomodulation in Non-exudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

    INTRODUCTION Photobiomodulation (PBM) represents a potential treatment for non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). PBM uses wavelengths of light to target components of the mitochondrial respiratory chain to improve cellular bioenergetic outputs. The aim of this study was to further investigate the effects of PBM on clinical, quality of life (QoL) and anatomical outcomes in subjects with intermediate stage non-exudative AMD. METHODS The multicenter LIGHTSITE II study was a randomized clinical trial evaluating safety and efficacy of PBM in intermediate non-exudative AMD. The LumiThera Valeda® Light Delivery System delivered multiwavelength PBM (590, 660 and 850 nm) or sham treatment 3 × per week over 3-4 weeks (9 treatments per series) with repeated treatments at baseline (BL), 4 and 8 months. Subjects were enrolled with 20/32 to 20/100 best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and no central geographic atrophy (GA) within the central fovea (500 μm). RESULTS LIGHTSITE II enrolled 44 non-exudative AMD subjects (53 eyes). PBM-treated eyes showed statistically significant improvement in BCVA at 9 months (n = 32 eyes, p = 0.02) with a 4-letter gain in the PBM-treated group versus a 0.5-letter gain in the sham-treated group (ns, p < 0.1) for patients that received all 27 PBM treatments (n = 29 eyes). Approximately 35.3% of PBM-treated eyes showed ≥ 5-letter improvement at 9 months. Macular drusen volume was not increased over time in the PBM-treated group but did show increases in the sham-treated group. While PBM and sham groups both showed GA lesion growth in the trial period, there was 20% less growth in the PBM group over 10 months, suggesting potential disease-modifying effects. No safety concerns or signs of phototoxicity were observed. CONCLUSION These results confirm previous clinical testing of multiwavelength PBM and support treatment with Valeda as a novel therapy with a unique mechanism of action as a potential treatment for non-exudative AMD.     Study of the Composite Supernova Remnant MSH 11-62

    We present the analysis of the X-ray data collected during an observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) MSH 11-62 by the Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA). We show that MSH 11-62 is a composite remnant whose X-ray emission comes from two distinct contributions. Nonthermal, synchrotron emission, localized to a region of radius (~~)3' (consistent with a point source) dominates the total flux above 2 keV. A second contribution comes from a thermal component, extended up to a radius of (~~)6' and detected only at energies below 2keV. The spatial and spectral analysis imply the presence of a neutron star losing energy at a rate of about (10**36 - 10**37) ergs/s. No pulsed emission is detected and we set a limit on the pulsed fraction of 10%. This is consistent with the lack of a radio pulsar in the remnant, which may indicate that the pulsed emission from the rapidly rotating compact object that should be powering the synchrotron nebula is beamed and our viewing direction is unfavorable. In either event, the central neutron star deposits much of its spin-down energy into the surrounding synchrotron nebula where, through direct imaging with broadband satellites such as ASCA, it is possible to study the energetics and evolution of the compact remnant.Comment: 30 pages, including 5 figures, Latex.
