A "biografia artística" com jovens deslocados em acampamentos no Iraque: presença como indicador de resiliência

    Get PDF
The current armed conflicts in the world, and in particular those linked to the Islamic State System (ISIS) in Iraq, constitute a major obstacle to stable benchmarks, to a collective reading of a common culture, and to a society free from the symptoms of war. Inclusive artistic interventions are often deployed with children affected by conflict as a source of resilience and empowerment. The objective of this article is to propose entry into resilience identified during the implementation of a device of an "artistic biography" activities with coaches of an NGO and young people in a camp in Iraq. The device built was a project to "paint our caravans" as a first project with the young people in a camp. Through our experience as an artist, trainer and researcher, we observe the indicators of entry into "presence" during the artistic activities. Involvement in a collective work, self-recognition by the coaches and self-recognition in the final artistic work are the three indicators of presence that we note. Individual and collective resilience processes are complex and long and subject to many obstacles. Our article invites further investigation to build evidence to develop artistic response in humanitarian emergencies.

Liver and Egg Yolk Cholesterol Changes Caused by Dietary Lipids.

A series of seven short term experiments were conducted using SCWL laying hens to study liver and egg yolk cholesterol changes caused by dietary lipids. For all the experiments, the individually caged layers were 55 week-old or older and automated procedures were used to measure the liver and yolk cholesterol responses. In the first four experiments the diets contained olive or safflower oils at 8%, oleic or linoleic acids at 6%, all with or without cholesterol. In experiment 5, dietary levels of olive and safflower (1 and 8%) and cholesterol (0 and 1%) were factorially combined and examined. The olive and safflower oils at dietary levels of 1, 5 and 9% each were also examined in separated experiments in factorial combinations with cholesterol at levels of 0, .5 and 1%. The addition of cholesterol to the oil of fatty acid diets resulted in significant (P \u3c .05) elevations of yolk cholesterol levels. The responses of liver and egg yolk cholesterol contents to dietary olive oil were positive and linear. As dietary cholesterol was increased the liver cholesterol content increased in a quadratic fashion with the rate of increase higher after the second level (.5%) of dietary cholesterol. As dietary cholesterol was increased the egg yolk cholesterol content increased in a quadratic fashion with the rate of increase higher after the second level (.5%) of dietary cholesterol for safflower oil whereas the rate decreased with olive oil. A significant (P \u3c .05) positive olive oil by cholesterol interaction was detected for liver cholesterol whereas the same interaction for daily feed intake showed a significant negative response (P \u3c .05). The significant (P \u3c .05) olive oil by safflower oil by cholesterol interaction for feed intake further corrolsorated the olive oil by cholesterol for the same variable, indicating that feed consumption is a control mechanism for reducing exogenous cholesterol overload. It was concluded that the oleic acid contained in olive oil was the main nutritional factor determining the significant changes of the liver and egg yolk cholesterol

Chicano Letrado: The Native Informant as Writer in Pocho

    Get PDF
José Antonio Villarreal’s novel Pocho, originally published in 1959 and arguably the first work of Chicano literature, captures in its protagonist, Richard Rubio, the dilemmas of an emerging culture’s native informants. As a Chicano native informant specifically, Richard Rubio unwittingly aides in overturning his community’s cultural silence by disclosing knowledge about what it is like to be silent – what it is like to be subaltern.. Such cultural knowledge is disclosed to both other characters within the story and, of course, to readers of the novel themselves. The native informant of Pocho, who is an aspiring writer himself, must negotiate between his culture’s declining oral tradition and the more public and authoritative written tradition to which he is attracted. What is particularly noteworthy about Pocho’s contemporary landmark status in Chicano literature is that it very much stands as a narrative – and thus, arguably, the first künstlerroman of contemporary Chicano literature – about the making of the Chicano writer

This review analyzes randomized and controlled studies carried out with patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia, who had been treated with either: (1) cognitive-behavioral therapy, (2) exercise training programs, or (3) a combination of both. The main conclusions of the interventions realized up to now are summarized and proposals with a view to improving outcomes are made, especially the early detection of patients at risk of developing fibromyalgia, the identification of subgroups and the development of treatments adjusted at the patient’s profile.

Juggling Between Parental and School Expectations

We examined how perceived acculturation expectations from parents and school, and ethnic discrimination predicted early adolescents’ heritage and mainstream acculturation orientations at home (private domain) and in school (public domain) one year later. We surveyed 263 early adolescents of immigrant background in Germany (Mage = 10.44 years, 60% female). Multigroup path analyses revealed that perceived acculturation expectations and ethnic discrimination were more strongly related to adolescents’ private than public acculturation orientations. Parental heritage expectations were the strongest predictor of adolescents’ acculturation orientations. Boys were more susceptible than girls to ethnic discrimination and acculturation expectations in school, which affected their private and public acculturation orientations. Results highlight the importance of integrating domain-specific and gendered experiences when analyzing adolescents’ acculturative development

Ethnic Label Use in Adolescents from Traditional and Non-Traditional Immigrant Communities

Understanding adolescents’ use of ethnic labels is a key developmental issue, particularly given the practical significance of identity and self-definition in adolescents’ lives. Ethnic labeling was examined among adolescents in the traditional immigrant receiving area of Los Angeles (Asian n = 258, Latino n = 279) and the non-traditional immigrant receiving area of North Carolina (Asian n = 165, Latino n = 239). Logistic regressions showed that adolescents from different geographic settings use different ethnic labels, with youth from NC preferring heritage and panethnic labels and youth from LA preferring hyphenated American labels. Second generation youth were more likely than first generation youth to use hyphenated American labels, and less likely to use heritage or panethnic labels. Greater ethnic centrality increased the odds of heritage label use, and greater English proficiency increased the odds of heritage-American label use. These associations significantly mediated the initial effects of setting. Further results examine ethnic differences as well as links between labels and self-esteem. The discussion highlights implications of ethnic labeling and context

Supported education as an empowerment intervention for people with mental illness

    Get PDF
Many adults with severe mental illnesses experienced disability onset in early adulthood, causing interruption or indefinite postponement of postsecondary education. Supported education programs are a recent innovation to assist in integrating people with mental illness, who desire to resume their postsecondary education in an educational setting where they can experience life as a student rather than as a mental patient. This study reports analyses of focus groups conducted to assess the impact of a supported education program from the perspectives of students who graduated from the program. Themes emerged from the data and were grouped under the following headings: problems and concerns, wants and desires, impact of supported education, personal empowerment, collective empowerment, and postprogram supports needed. While the program did not primarily view itself as an empowerment intervention, results revealed that empowerment did occur and contributed to the intervention's emphasis on self-awareness, group support, and advocacy. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/34571/1/1_ftp.pd

What's Values Got to Do With It? Thriving Among Mexican/Mexican American College Students

The authors examined traditional Mexican/Mexican American and perceived U.S. mainstream cultural values as predictors of thriving. One hundred twenty-four (37 men, 87 women) self-identified Mexican/Mexican American college students participated in the study. The traditional Mexican/Mexican American cultural values of family support and religion were significant positive predictors of thriving. In addition, the perceived U.S. mainstream cultural value of competition negatively predicted thriving, and the perceived U.S. mainstream cultural value of material success positively predicted thriving. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed
