Electric Charge in Interaction with Magnetically Charged Black Holes
We examine the angular momentum of an electric charge e placed at rest
outside a dilaton black hole with magnetic charge Q. The electromagnetic
angular momentum which is stored in the electromagnetic field outside the black
hole shows several common features regardless of the dilaton coupling strength,
though the dilaton black holes are drastically different in their spacetime
structure depending on it. First, the electromagnetic angular momentum depends
on the separation distance between the two objects and changes monotonically
from eQ to 0 as the charge goes down from infinity to the horizon, if
rotational effects of the black hole are discarded. Next, as the black hole
approaches extremality, however, the electromagnetic angular momentum tends to
be independent of the distance between the two objects. It is then precisely
as in the electric charge and monopole system in flat spacetime. We
discuss why these effects are exhibited and argue that the above features are
to hold in widely generic settings including black hole solutions in theories
with more complicated field contents, by addressing the no hair theorem for
black holes and the phenomenon of field expulsion exhibited by extremal black
holes.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures ; Typos are corrected and a reference is adde
Quantizing higher-spin gravity in free-field variables
We study the formulation of massless higher-spin gravity on AdS in a
gauge in which the fundamental variables satisfy free field Poisson brackets.
This gauge choice leaves a small portion of the gauge freedom unfixed, which
should be further quotiented out. We show that doing so leads to a bulk version
of the Coulomb gas formalism for CFT's: the generators of the residual
gauge symmetries are the classical limits of screening charges, while the
gauge-invariant observables are classical charges. Quantization in these
variables can be carried out using standard techniques and makes manifest a
remnant of the triality symmetry of . This symmetry can be
used to argue that the theory should be supplemented with additional matter
content which is precisely that of the Prokushkin-Vasiliev theory. As a further
application, we use our formulation to quantize a class of conical surplus
solutions and confirm the conjecture that these are dual to specific degenerate
primaries, to all orders in the large central charge expansion.Comment: 31 pages + appendices. V2: typos corrected, reference adde
Spacelike Singularities and Hidden Symmetries of Gravity
We review the intimate connection between (super-)gravity close to a
spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit") and the theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody
algebras. We show that in this limit the gravitational theory can be
reformulated in terms of billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space,
revealing that the dynamics is completely determined by a (possibly infinite)
sequence of reflections, which are elements of a Lorentzian Coxeter group. Such
Coxeter groups are the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras,
suggesting that these algebras yield symmetries of gravitational theories. Our
presentation is aimed to be a self-contained and comprehensive treatment of the
subject, with all the relevant mathematical background material introduced and
explained in detail. We also review attempts at making the infinite-dimensional
symmetries manifest, through the construction of a geodesic sigma model based
on a Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra. An explicit example is provided for the case
of the hyperbolic algebra E10, which is conjectured to be an underlying
symmetry of M-theory. Illustrations of this conjecture are also discussed in
the context of cosmological solutions to eleven-dimensional supergravity.Comment: 228 pages. Typos corrected. References added. Subject index added.

Higher spin extension of cosmological spacetimes in 3D: asymptotically flat behaviour with chemical potentials and thermodynamics
A generalized set of asymptotic conditions for higher spin gravity without
cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions is constructed. They
include the most general temporal components of the gauge fields that
manifestly preserve the original asymptotic higher spin extension of the
BMS algebra, with the same central charge. By virtue of a suitable
permissible gauge choice, it is shown that this set can be directly recovered
as a limit of the boundary conditions that have been recently constructed in
the case of negative cosmological constant, whose asymptotic symmetries are
spanned by two copies of the centrally-extended W algebra. Since the
generalized asymptotic conditions allow to incorporate chemical potentials
conjugated to the higher spin charges, a higher spin extension of locally flat
cosmological spacetimes becomes naturally included within the set. It is shown
that their thermodynamic properties can be successfully obtained exclusively in
terms of gauge fields and the topology of the Euclidean manifold, which is
shown to be the one of a solid torus, but with reversed orientation as compared
with one of the black holes. It is also worth highlighting that regularity of
the fields can be ensured through a procedure that does not require an explicit
matrix representation of the entire gauge group. In few words, we show that the
temporal components of generalized dreibeins can be consistently gauged away,
which partially fixes the chemical potentials, so that the remaining conditions
can just be obtained by requiring the holonomy of the generalized spin
connection along a thermal circle to be trivial. The extension of the
generalized asymptotically flat behaviour to the case of spins is also
discussed.Comment: 33 pages, one figure. Talk given at the "Meeting on the horizon",

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: A Catalog of >4000 Sunyaev–Zel’dovich Galaxy Clusters
We present a catalog of 4195 optically confirmed Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) selected galaxy clusters detected with signal-to-noise ratio >4 in 13,211 deg2 of sky surveyed by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). Cluster candidates were selected by applying a multifrequency matched filter to 98 and 150 GHz maps constructed from ACT observations obtained from 2008 to 2018 and confirmed using deep, wide-area optical surveys. The clusters span the redshift range 0.04 1 clusters, and a total of 868 systems are new discoveries. Assuming an SZ signal versus mass-scaling relation calibrated from X-ray observations, the sample has a 90% completeness mass limit of M500c > 3.8 × 1014 M⊙, evaluated at z = 0.5, for clusters detected at signal-to-noise ratio >5 in maps filtered at an angular scale of 2farcm4. The survey has a large overlap with deep optical weak-lensing surveys that are being used to calibrate the SZ signal mass-scaling relation, such as the Dark Energy Survey (4566 deg2), the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (469 deg2), and the Kilo Degree Survey (825 deg2). We highlight some noteworthy objects in the sample, including potentially projected systems, clusters with strong lensing features, clusters with active central galaxies or star formation, and systems of multiple clusters that may be physically associated. The cluster catalog will be a useful resource for future cosmological analyses and studying the evolution of the intracluster medium and galaxies in massive clusters over the past 10 Gyr
Improved functionalization of oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles
can providemultiple benefits for biomedical applications
in aqueous environments such asmagnetic separation or
magnetic resonance imaging. To increase the colloidal
stability and allow subsequent reactions, the introduction
of hydrophilic functional groups onto the particles’
surface is essential. During this process, the original
coating is exchanged by preferably covalently bonded
ligands such as trialkoxysilanes. The duration of the
silane exchange reaction, which commonly takes more
than 24 h, is an important drawback for this approach. In
this paper, we present a novel method, which introduces
ultrasonication as an energy source to dramatically
accelerate this process, resulting in high-quality waterdispersible nanoparticles around 10 nmin size. To prove
the generic character, different functional groups were
introduced on the surface including polyethylene glycol
chains, carboxylic acid, amine, and thiol groups. Their
colloidal stability in various aqueous buffer solutions as
well as human plasma and serum was investigated to
allow implementation in biomedical and sensing
applications.status: publishe

Cause of Death and Predictors of All-Cause Mortality in Anticoagulated Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation : Data From ROCKET AF
M. Kaste on työryhmän ROCKET AF Steering Comm jäsen.Background-Atrial fibrillation is associated with higher mortality. Identification of causes of death and contemporary risk factors for all-cause mortality may guide interventions. Methods and Results-In the Rivaroxaban Once Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (ROCKET AF) study, patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation were randomized to rivaroxaban or dose-adjusted warfarin. Cox proportional hazards regression with backward elimination identified factors at randomization that were independently associated with all-cause mortality in the 14 171 participants in the intention-to-treat population. The median age was 73 years, and the mean CHADS(2) score was 3.5. Over 1.9 years of median follow-up, 1214 (8.6%) patients died. Kaplan-Meier mortality rates were 4.2% at 1 year and 8.9% at 2 years. The majority of classified deaths (1081) were cardiovascular (72%), whereas only 6% were nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. No significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed between the rivaroxaban and warfarin arms (P=0.15).
