    Location retrieval using qualitative place signatures of visible landmarks

    Location retrieval based on visual information is to retrieve the location of an agent (e.g. human, robot) or the area they see by comparing their observations with a certain representation of the environment. Existing methods generally treat the problem as a content-based image retrieval problem and have demonstrated promising results in terms of localization accuracy. However, these methods are challenging to scale up due to the volume of reference data involved; and the image descriptions might not be easily understandable/communicable for humans to describe surroundings. Considering that humans often use less precise but easily produced qualitative spatial language and high-level semantic landmarks when describing an environment, a coarse-to-fine qualitative location retrieval method is proposed in this work to quickly narrow down the initial location of an agent by exploiting the available information in large-scale open data. This approach describes and indexes a location/place using the perceived qualitative spatial relations between ordered pairs of co-visible landmarks from the perspective of viewers, termed as β€˜qualitative place signatures’ (QPS). The usability and effectiveness of the proposed method were evaluated using openly available datasets, together with simulated observations by considering different types perception errors

    Video Copy Detection on the Internet: The Challenges of Copyright and Multiplicity

    This paper presents applications for dealing with videos on the web, using an efficient technique for video copy detection in large archives. Managing videos on the web is the source of two exciting challenges: the respect of the copyright and the linkage of multiple videos. We present a technique called ViCopT for Video Copy Tracking which is based on labels of behavior of local descriptors computed along video. The re-sults obtained on large amount of data (270 hours of videos from the Internet) are very promising, even with a large video database (700 hours): ViCopT displays excellent robustness to various severe signal transformations, making it able to identify copies accurately from highly similar videos, as well as to link similar videos, in order to reduce redundancy or to gather the metadata associated. Finally, we also show that ViCopT goes further by detecting segments having the same background, with the aim of linking videos of the same cate-gory, like forecast weather programs or particular TV shows. 1

    Labelling the Behaviour of Local Descriptors for Selective Video Content Retrieval

    This paper presents an approach for indexing a large set of videos by considering the cinematic behaviour of local visual features along the sequences. The proposed concept is based on the extraction and the local description of interest points and further on the estimation of their trajectories along the video sequence. Analysing the low-level description obtained allows to highlight semantic trends of behaviours and then to assign labels. Such an indexing approach of the video content has several interesting properties: the low-level description provides a rich and compact description, while labels of behaviour provide a generic and semantic description, relevant for selective video content retrieval depending on the application. The approach is firstly evaluated for Content-Based Copy Detection. We show that taking these labels into account allows to significantly reduce false alarms. Secondly, the approach is experimented on particular applications of video monitoring, where selective labels of behaviour show their capability to improve the analysis and the retrieval of spatio-temporal video content

    Prefrontal Cortex Glutamate Correlates with Mental Perspective-Taking

    Background: Dysfunctions in theory of mind and empathic abilities have been suggested as core symptoms in major psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and autism. Since self monitoring, perspective taking and empathy have been linked to prefrontal (PFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) function, neurotransmitter variations in these areas may account for normal and pathological variations of these functions. Converging evidence indicates an essential role of glutamatergic neurotransmission in psychiatric diseases with pronounced deficits in empathy. However, the role of the glutamate system for different dimensions of empathy has not been investigated so far. Methodology/Principal Findings: Absolute concentrations of cerebral glutamate in the ACC, left dorsolateral PFC and left hippocampus were determined by 3-tesla proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in 17 healthy individuals. Three dimensions of empathy were estimated by a self-rating questionnaire, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). Linear regression analysis showed that dorsolateral PFC glutamate concentration was predicted by IRI factor β€˜β€˜perspective taking’’ (T = 22.710, p = 0.018; adjusted alpha-level of 0.017, Bonferroni) but not by β€˜β€˜empathic concern’ ’ or β€˜β€˜personal distress’’. No significant relationship between IRI subscores and the glutamate levels in the ACC or left hippocampus was detected. Conclusions/Significance: This is the first study to investigate the role of the glutamate system for dimensions of theory of mind and empathy.     Magnetoencephalography Study of Right Parietal Lobe Dysfunction of the Evoked Mirror Neuron System in Antipsychotic-Free Schizophrenia

    INTRODUCTION: Patients with schizophrenia commonly exhibit deficits of non-verbal communication in social contexts, which may be related to cognitive dysfunction that impairs recognition of biological motion. Although perception of biological motion is known to be mediated by the mirror neuron system, there have been few empirical studies of this system in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Using magnetoencephalography, we examined whether antipsychotic-free schizophrenia patients displayed mirror neuron system dysfunction during observation of biological motion (jaw movement of another individual). RESULTS: Compared with normal controls, the patients with schizophrenia had fewer components of both the waveform and equivalent current dipole, suggesting aberrant brain activity resulting from dysfunction of the right inferior parietal cortex. They also lacked the changes of alpha band and gamma band oscillation seen in normal controls, and had weaker phase-locking factors and gamma-synchronization predominantly in right parietal cortex. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that untreated patients with schizophrenia exhibit aberrant mirror neuron system function based on the right inferior parietal cortex, which is characterized by dysfunction of gamma-synchronization in the right parietal lobe during observation of biological motion

    Social cognitive deficits and their neural correlates in progressive supranuclear palsy

    Although progressive supranuclear palsy is defined by its akinetic rigidity, vertical supranuclear gaze palsy and falls, cognitive impairments are an important determinant of patients’ and carers’ quality of life. Here, we investigate whether there is a broad deficit of modality-independent social cognition in progressive supranuclear palsy and explore the neural correlates for these. We recruited 23 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (using clinical diagnostic criteria, nine with subsequent pathological confirmation) and 22 age- and education-matched controls. Participants performed an auditory (voice) emotion recognition test, and a visual and auditory theory of mind test. Twenty-two patients and 20 controls underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging to analyse neural correlates of social cognition deficits using voxel-based morphometry. Patients were impaired on the voice emotion recognition and theory of mind tests but not auditory and visual control conditions. Grey matter atrophy in patients correlated with both voice emotion recognition and theory of mind deficits in the right inferior frontal gyrus, a region associated with prosodic auditory emotion recognition. Theory of mind deficits also correlated with atrophy of the anterior rostral medial frontal cortex, a region associated with theory of mind in health. We conclude that patients with progressive supranuclear palsy have a multimodal deficit in social cognition. This deficit is due, in part, to progressive atrophy in a network of frontal cortical regions linked to the integration of socially relevant stimuli and interpretation of their social meaning. This impairment of social cognition is important to consider for those managing and caring for patients with progressive supranuclear palsy

    The benefit of directly comparing autism and schizophrenia for revealing mechanisms of social cognitive impairment

    Autism and schizophrenia share a history of diagnostic conflation that was not definitively resolved until the publication of the DSM-III in 1980. Though now recognized as heterogeneous disorders with distinct developmental trajectories and dissociative features, much of the early nosological confusion stemmed from apparent overlap in certain areas of social dysfunction. In more recent years, separate but substantial literatures have accumulated for autism and schizophrenia demonstrating that abnormalities in social cognition directly contribute to the characteristic social deficits of both disorders. The current paper argues that direct comparison of social cognitive impairment can highlight shared and divergent mechanisms underlying pathways to social dysfunction, a process that can provide significant clinical benefit by informing the development of tailored treatment efforts. Thus, while the history of diagnostic conflation between autism and schizophrenia may have originated in similarities in social dysfunction, the goal of direct comparisons is not to conflate them once again but rather to reveal distinctions that illuminate disorder-specific mechanisms and pathways that contribute to social cognitive impairment
