Supporting Worth Mapping with Sentence Completion

    Get PDF
Expectations for design and evaluation approaches are set by the development practices within which they are used. Worth Centred Development (WCD) seeks to both shape and fit such practices. We report a study that combined two WCD approaches. Sentence completion gathered credible quantitative data on user values, which were used to identify relevant values and aversions of two player groups for an online gambling site. These values provided human value elements for a complementary WCD approach of worth mapping. Initial worth maps were extended in three workshops, which focused on outcomes and user experiences that could be better addressed in the current product and associated marketing materials. We describe how worth maps were prepared for, and presented in, workshops, and how product owners and associated business roles evaluated the combination of WCD approaches. Based on our experiences, we offer practical advice on this combinination

Design, Synthesis, Characterization, and Evaluation of the Anti-HT-29 Colorectal Cell Line Activity of Novel 8-Oxyquinolinate-Platinum(II)-Loaded Nanostructured Lipid Carriers Targeted with Riboflavin

Colorectal cancer is occasionally called colon or rectal cancer, depending on where cancer begins to form, and is the second leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. The platinum-based [PtCl(8-O-quinolinate)(dmso)] (8-QO-Pt) compound has demonstrated encouraging anticancer activity. Three different systems of 8-QO-Pt-encapsulated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) with riboflavin (RFV) were investigated. NLCs of myristyl myristate were synthesized by ultrasonication in the presence of RFV. RFV-decorated nanoparticles displayed a spherical shape and a narrow size dispersion in the range of 144–175 nm mean particle diameter. The 8-QO-Pt-loaded formulations of NLC/RFV with more than 70% encapsulation efficiency showed sustained in vitro release for 24 h. Cytotoxicity, cell uptake, and apoptosis were evaluated in the HT-29 human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line. The results revealed that 8-QO-Pt-loaded formulations of NLC/RFV showed higher cytotoxicity than the free 8-QO-Pt compound at 5.0 µM. All three systems exhibited different levels of cellular internalization. Moreover, the hemotoxicity assay showed the safety profile of the formulations (less than 3.7%). Taken together, RFV-targeted NLC systems for drug delivery have been investigated for the first time in our study and the results are promising for the future of chemotherapy in colon cancer treatmen

Investigating the social value of the Ripon rivers flood alleviation scheme

This paper argues for an approach to flood alleviation design that considers the need not only for technical knowledge, but also a social perspective. It is predicted that more intense rainfall and rising sea levels will result in a greater number of people vulnerable to flood events. Flood alleviation design in the UK is often focused upon technical and cost-effective solutions, and consideration of social impact is seen as secondary. This paper examines how the social value of a UK flood alleviation scheme is perceived and discussed, by the local community and by those responsible for the design of the scheme, and exposes differences in perceptions both between and within these two groups. It recommends a future approach in which an understanding of the social value of a flood alleviation scheme is first co-produced with the community affected, enabling the design of a socially acceptable and successful project. The research presented in this paper is part of a larger study. The research is conducted with the aid of funding from an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) iCASE doctoral award. Nuclear astrophysics is a field at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics, which seeks to understand the nuclear engines of astronomical objects and the origin of the chemical elements. This white paper summarizes progress and status of the field, the new open questions that have emerged, and the tremendous scientific opportunities that have opened up with major advances in capabilities across an ever growing number of disciplines and subfields that need to be integrated. We take a holistic view of the field discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in nuclear astrophysics in regards to science, diversity, education, and the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the field. Clearly nuclear astrophysics is a dynamic field with a bright future that is entering a new era of discovery opportunities

Today, it is known that sport has made a significant progress associated with its transition into a visual product and increasing needs of the people to keep fit and for healthy life as well as developing information technology and a growing leisure culture. As a social institution, sport’s presence of an ever-growing structure in economic and cultural organizations has necessitated this social phenomenon’s reappraisal when the changing economic and social conditions of the world have been taken into consideration. Thus, sport has its share from the incidents in the process of globalization that has made the conditions for international competition and free market economy, and the world’s transform into a single market dominant. To survive in today's rapidly changing competitive environment, companies should constantly change and renew their products, services and production methods. In this context, a new and age appropriate administrative mentality emerging in recent years has begun to be used. This governance model is innovation. It is defined as the use of new methods in social cultural and administrative environment. Innovation, a persistent administration model means meeting the individual and social needs at a better level. By means of Innovation meaning of the word means renewal, or innovation, companies have been developing administrative strategies for sectoral mobility by following the requirements of the age. However, the point emphasized here the use of innovation as a method converted into economic and social value added not as the new one. With the developing technology, it is ever inevitable to form sport clubs into a structure that is competitive and could produce goods and services, acting fast and flexible, harmonising with changes and transformations within the scope of innovation method of administration. These innovation methods, which could be applied in sport based, not also could enlarge the scope of sport clubs but also constitute a powerful and proactive structure that carry out its assignments and responsibilities. In this direction, ıt is aimed in this study to examine the applicability of the innovation administration model, one of the different administration models which are the necessities of developing economic life at sports clubs. Also, it is tried to mention the effects of innovation administration for the sustainability of competition in the world of sport industry

An improved speed controller for PMSM drive with unbalanced load using load torque observer

###EgeUn###In order to overcome disturbance effects as load torque variations in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) of washing machines, an improved controller with feed forward compensation is presented in this paper. A few load torque observer techniques have been studied and combined with several sensorless control techniques. The observed torque is used as feedforward in q-axis current PI controller to compensate the output of speed PI controller. Simulation and experimental results show that in an operating system with disturbances as washing machines, PI controller response time can be improved by adopting an accurate feedforward scheme. © 2019 IEEE

Class e Resonant Converter Design for LED Drivers

###EgeUn###The LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting technology has been becoming widespread rapidly due to having advantages such as extremely long lifetime, compact structure and very low energy consumption. In the literature, various LED driver topologies are proposed for controlling the LED's current and voltage. However, most of them require a large capacitor and inductor values due to low switching frequency operation. On the other hand, high capacitance with low volume can be achieved by using the electrolytic type capacitors which limits the lifetime and reliability of LED driver. By the help of high switching frequency, converter size can be reduced significantly. In addition, the capacitor size decreases and therefore electrolytic capacitors can be eliminated. In this study, isolated Class E resonant topology operating at 1 MHz is analysed and designed for 48 V/60 W offline LED driver. The design methodology is presented and verified by PSIM simulation. © 2019 IEEE.3180379 Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştirma KurumuACKNOWLEDGMENT This research was supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) under the project grant number 3180379.
