    Lightweight, low compression aircraft diesel engine

    The feasibility of converting a spark ignition aircraft engine to the diesel cycle was investigated. Procedures necessary for converting a single cylinder GTS10-520 are described as well as a single cylinder diesel engine test program. The modification of the engine for the hot port cooling concept is discussed. A digital computer graphics simulation of a twin engine aircraft incorporating the diesel engine and Hot Fort concept is presented showing some potential gains in aircraft performance. Sample results of the computer program used in the simulation are included

    Carbon-13 in groundwater from English and Norwegian crystalline rock aquifers: a tool for deducing the origin of alkalinity?

    The 13C signature is evaluated for various environmental compartments (vegetation, soils, soil gas, rock and groundwater) for three crystalline rock terrains in England and Norway. The data are used to evaluate the extent to which stable carbon isotopic data can be applied to deduce whether the alkalinity in crystalline bedrock groundwaters has its origin in hydrolysis of carbonate or silicate minerals by CO2. The resolution of this issue has profound implications for the role of weathering of crystalline rocks as a global sink for CO2. In the investigated English terrain (Isles of Scilly), groundwaters are hydrochemically immature and DIC is predominantly in the form of carbonic acid with a soil gas signature. In the Norwegian terrains, the evidence is not conclusive but is consistent with a significant fraction of the groundwater DIC being derived from silicate hydrolysis by CO2. A combined consideration of pH, alkalinity and carbon isotope data, plotted alongside theoretical evolutionary pathways on bivariate diagrams, strongly suggests real evolutionary pathways are likely to be hybrid, potentially involving both open and closed CO2 conditions

    A DFN Approach to Evaluating the Hydrogeological Significance of Lithostatic Unloading in Fractured Strata Around Open-Pit Workings

    The majority of open-pit mineral workings are established in hydrogeological environments in which unsaturated drainage or saturated groundwater flow occurs predominantly via discrete fracture networks. Stress relaxation resulting from open-pit mineral extraction can lead to a change in host rock fracture network configuration and fracture hydraulic properties, with the potential to change local hydrogeological characteristics and groundwater flow regimes. Research being undertaken at the University of Leeds is applying a DFN approach to investigate the hydrogeological significance of such effects in relation to methodologies for impact assessment at mineral sites. The paper presents a summary of the research approach and preliminary results. A discrete finite element approach to geomechanical modelling has been undertaken with simulation of DFN evolution in response to lithostatic unloading for a range of pre-existing discontinuity configurations, lithological types and variations in in-situ stress regimes. Preliminary modelling results have provided improved understanding of the vertical and lateral extent of potential DFN response for a range of excavation profiles. Research results will be used to define conditions under which open-pit mineral extraction could lead to hydrogeologically significant change in fracture flow drainage characteristics at a scale relevant to hydrogeological impact assessment for new and existing mineral workings

    Tree height strongly affects estimates of water-use efficiency responses to climate and CO2 using isotopes

    Various studies report substantial increases in intrinsic water-use efficiency (Wi), estimated using carbon isotopes in tree rings, suggesting trees are gaining increasingly more carbon per unit water lost due to increases in atmospheric CO2. Usually, reconstructions do not, however, correct for the effect of intrinsic developmental changes in Wi as trees grow larger. Here we show, by comparingWi across varying tree sizes at one CO2 level, that ignoring such developmental effects can severely affect inferences of trees' Wi. Wi doubled or even tripled over a trees' lifespan in three broadleaf species due to changes in tree height and light availability alone, and there are also weak trends for Pine trees. Developmental trends in broadleaf species are as large as the trends previously assigned to CO2 and climate. Credible future tree ring isotope studies require explicit accounting for species-specific developmental effects before CO2 and climate effects are inferred.Peer reviewe

    IllustrisTNG in the HSC-SSP: image data release and the major role of mini mergers as drivers of asymmetry and star formation

    At fixed galaxy stellar mass, there is a clear observational connection between structural asymmetry and offset from the star forming main sequence, Δ\DeltaSFMS. Herein, we use the TNG50 simulation to investigate the relative roles of major mergers (stellar mass ratios μ0.25\mu\geq0.25), minor (0.1μ<0.250.1 \leq \mu < 0.25), and mini mergers (0.01μ<0.10.01 \leq \mu < 0.1) in driving this connection amongst star forming galaxies (SFGs). We use dust radiative transfer post-processing with SKIRT to make a large, public collection of synthetic Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) images of simulated TNG galaxies over 0.1z0.70.1\leq z \leq 0.7 with logM/M9\log M_{\star} / \mathrm{M}_{\odot}\geq9 (750\sim750k images). Using their instantaneous SFRs, known merger histories/forecasts, and HSC-SSP asymmetries, we show (1) that TNG50 SFGs qualitatively reproduce the observed trend between Δ\DeltaSFMS and asymmetry and (2) a strikingly similar trend emerges between Δ\DeltaSFMS and the time-to-coalescence for mini mergers. Controlling for redshift, stellar mass, environment, and gas fraction, we show that individual mini merger events yield small enhancements in SFRs and asymmetries that are sustained on long timescales (at least 3\sim3 Gyr after coalescence, on average) -- in contrast to major/minor merger remnants which peak at much greater amplitudes but are consistent with controls only 1\sim1 Gyr after coalescence. Integrating the boosts in SFRs and asymmetries driven by μ0.01\mu\geq0.01 mergers since z=0.7z=0.7 in TNG50 SFGs, we show that mini mergers are responsible for (i) 5555 per cent of all merger-driven star formation and (ii) 7070 per cent of merger-driven asymmetric structure. Due to their relative frequency and prolonged boost timescales, mini mergers dominate over their minor and major counterparts in driving star formation and asymmetry in SFGs.Comment: 32 pages; 18 figures; submitted to MNRAS; Image data available via the TNG website: www.tng-project.org/bottrell2

    Earliest Triassic microbialites in the South China Block and other areas; controls on their growth and distribution

    Earliest Triassic microbialites (ETMs) and inorganic carbonate crystal fans formed after the end-Permian mass extinction (ca. 251.4 Ma) within the basal Triassic Hindeodus parvus conodont zone. ETMs are distinguished from rarer, and more regional, subsequent Triassic microbialites. Large differences in ETMs between northern and southern areas of the South China block suggest geographic provinces, and ETMs are most abundant throughout the equatorial Tethys Ocean with further geographic variation. ETMs occur in shallow-marine shelves in a superanoxic stratified ocean and form the only widespread Phanerozoic microbialites with structures similar to those of the Cambro-Ordovician, and briefly after the latest Ordovician, Late Silurian and Late Devonian extinctions. ETMs disappeared long before the mid-Triassic biotic recovery, but it is not clear why, if they are interpreted as disaster taxa. In general, ETM occurrence suggests that microbially mediated calcification occurred where upwelled carbonate-rich anoxic waters mixed with warm aerated surface waters, forming regional dysoxia, so that extreme carbonate supersaturation and dysoxic conditions were both required for their growth. Long-term oceanic and atmospheric changes may have contributed to a trigger for ETM formation. In equatorial western Pangea, the earliest microbialites are late Early Triassic, but it is possible that ETMs could exist in western Pangea, if well-preserved earliest Triassic facies are discovered in future work

    Hydro-biogeochemical coupling beneath a large polythermal Arctic glacier: Implications for subice sheet biogeochemistry

It is also available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2009JF001602We analyze the interannual chemical and isotopic composition of runoff from a large, high Arctic valley glacier over a 5 year period, during which drainage evolved from a long-residence-time drainage system feeding an artesian subglacial upwelling (SGU) at the glacier terminus to a shorter-residence-time drainage system feeding an ice-marginal channel (IMC). Increased icemelt inputs to the SGU are thought to have triggered this evolution. This sequence of events provides a unique opportunity to identify coupling between subglacial hydrology and biogeochemical processes within drainage systems of differing residence time. The biogeochemistry of the SGU is consistent with prolonged contact between meltwaters and subglacial sediments, in which silicate dissolution is enhanced, anoxic processes (e.g., sulphate reduction) prevail, and microbially generated CO2 and sulphide oxidation drive mineral dissolution. Solute in the IMC was mainly derived from moraine pore waters which are added to the channel via extraglacial streams. These pore waters acquire solute predominantly via sulphide oxidation coupled to carbonate/silicate dissolution. We present the first evidence that microbially mediated processes may contribute a substantial proportion (80% in this case) of the total glacial solute flux, which includes coupling between microbial CO2-generation and silicate/carbonate dissolution. The latter suggests the presence of biofilms in subglacial/ice-marginal sediments, where local perturbation of the geochemical environment by release of protons, organic acids, and ligands stimulates mineral dissolution. These data enable inferences to be made regarding biogeochemical processes in longer-residence-time glacial systems, with implications for the future exploration of Antarctic subglacial lakes and other wet-based ice sheet environments

    Combined written and oral information prior to gastrointestinal endoscopy compared with oral information alone: a randomized trial

    BACKGROUND: Little is known about how to most effectively deliver relevant information to patients scheduled for endoscopy. METHODS: To assess the effects of combined written and oral information, compared with oral information alone on the quality of information before endoscopy and the level of anxiety. We designed a prospective study in two Swiss teaching hospitals which enrolled consecutive patients scheduled for endoscopy over a three-month period. Patients were randomized either to receiving, along with the appointment notice, an explanatory leaflet about the upcoming examination, or to oral information delivered by each patient's doctor. Evaluation of quality of information was rated on scales between 0 (none received) and 5 (excellent). The analysis of outcome variables was performed on the basis of intention to treat-analysis. Multivariate analysis of predictors of information scores was performed by linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Of 718 eligible patients 577 (80%) returned their questionnaire. Patients who received written leaflets (N = 278) rated the quality of information they received higher than those informed verbally (N = 299), for all 8 quality-of-information items. Differences were significant regarding information about the risks of the procedure (3.24 versus 2.26, p &lt; 0.001), how to prepare for the procedure (3.56 versus 3.23, p = 0.036), what to expect after the procedure (2.99 versus 2.59, p &lt; 0.001), and the 8 quality-of-information items (3.35 versus 3.02, p = 0.002). The two groups reported similar levels of anxiety before procedure (p = 0.66), pain during procedure (p = 0.20), tolerability throughout the procedure (p = 0.76), problems after the procedure (p = 0.22), and overall rating of the procedure between poor and excellent (p = 0.82). CONCLUSION: Written information led to more favourable assessments of the quality of information and had no impact on patient anxiety nor on the overall assessment of the endoscopy. Because structured and comprehensive written information is perceived as beneficial by patients, gastroenterologists should clearly explain to their patients the risks, benefits and alternatives of endoscopic procedures.     Growth, Fecundity, and Diets of Newly Established Silver Carp in the Middle Mississippi River

    The silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix has spread throughout the Mississippi River drainage. During 2003, we determined its population status and potential impact in the middle Mississippi River (MMR), the conduit between the lower Mississippi River and the upper Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers. We quantified growth, age structure, fecundity, and diets of silver carp sampled with trammel nets and AC electrofishing in main-channel areas. Mean length at age in the MMR exceeded that of populations in Asia by as much as 26%. Individuals were typically more than 1 year old and 230 mm total length, suggesting that small, young fish were absent. Individuals in this population matured earlier (age 2) than in the species\u27 native range. Regardless of phytoplankton variation (using chlorophyll a as a surrogate) and zooplankton concentration at MMR sites, phytoplankton was consistently most abundant in diets. Silver carp are finding suitable resources within the MMR, allowing individuals to grow rapidly during early life, persist as adults, and successfully disperse upstream

    Influence of parametric uncertainties and their interactions on small-signal stability : a case example of parallel-connected active loads in a DC microgrid

    Classical stability analysis techniques based on nominal models do not consider the uncertainty of system parameters, their interactions, and nonlinearity, which are important characteristics of practical highly coupled microgrids. In this work, variance-based sensitivity analysis is used to identify parameter combinations that have a significant impact on the small-signal stability of a microgrid featuring two parallel active loads. The analysis indicates that the effectiveness of source-side damping is reduced when resonant frequencies of load input filters become matched. Further results using derivative-based sensitivity analysis reveal that source-side resistance can exhibit drastically different effects on the stability if load input filter resonant frequencies are matched with respect to the case when they are well separated. These behaviours are verified using time-domain switching models
