The effect of Leucaena leucocephala on beef production and its toxicity in the Chaco Region of Argentina

Hedgerows of the fodder tree legume, Leucaena leucocephala ssp. glabrata (leucaena), planted with a companion grass, provide productive, profitable and sustainable tropical pasture (Shelton and Dalzell 2007). Although leucaena can improve beef production, poor grower adoption has limited development of leucaena in the Chaco Region of Argentina. Factors contributing to poor adoption include: (1) unsuccessful establishment; (2) limited understanding of leucaena management as a forage resource; and (3) concerns about mimosine toxici-ty. While these 3 limitations have been overcome in other regions of the world (e.g. northern Australia and the Chaco Region of Paraguay), in Argentina little is known about leucaena management and the protection of ruminants against mimosine toxicosis.Instituto de Investigación Animal del Chaco SemiáridoFil: Radrizzani Bonadeo, Alejandro. A simple interpretation of quantum mirages

In an interesting new experiment the electronic structure of a magnetic atom adsorbed on the surface of Cu(111), observed by STM, was projected into a remote location on the same surface. The purpose of the present paper is to interpret this experiment with a model Hamiltonian, using ellipses of the size of the experimental ones, containing about 2300 atoms. The charge distribution for the different wavefunctions is analyzed, in particular, for those with energy close to the Fermi energy of copper Ef. Some of them show two symmetric maxima located on the principal axis of the ellipse but not necessarily at the foci. If a Co atom is adsorbed at the site where the wavefunction with energy EFE_F has a maximum and the interaction is small, the main effect of the adsorbed atom will be to split this particular wavefunction in two. The total charge density will remain the same but the local density of states will present a dip at Ef at any site where the charge density is large enough. We relate the presence of this dip to the observation of quantum mirages. Our interpretation suggests that other sites, apart from the foci of the ellipses, can be used for projecting atomic images and also indicates the conditions for other non magnetic adsorbates to produce mirages.Comment: 3 pages, 3 Fig

Control of Decoherence and Correlation in Single Quantum Dissipative Oscillator Systems

A single quantum dissipative oscillator described by the Lindblad equation serves as a model for a nanosystem. This model is solved exactly by using the ambiguity function. The solution shows the features of decoherence (spatial extent of quantum behavior), correlation (spatial scale over which the system localizes to its physical dimensions), and mixing (mixed- state spatial correlation). A new relation between these length scales is obtained here. By varying the parameters contained in the Lindblad equation, it is shown that decoherence and correlation can be controlled. We indicate possible interpretation of the Lindblad parameters in the context of experiments using engineered reservoirs.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

The Notch system during pubertal development of the bovine mammary gland

    Get PDF
The development of the mammary gland of cows during pre-weaning and puberty will condition its future productive capacity and warrants special study. In this respect, Notch signaling regulates tissue development and fate by modifying cell proliferation and diferentiation and has been involved in stem cell maintenance, but has not been extensively studied in the developing mammary glands in cows. We therefore investigated Notch receptor expression and localization, as well as the expression of Notch ligands and target genes in the mammary gland of Holstein heifers in pre- and post-pubertal stages. Notch receptors 1 to 4 were detected by immunohistochemistry in the parenchyma and stroma of the developing gland. The subcellular localization of the four receptors was predominantly cytoplasmic except for NOTCH4, which was mostly nuclear. The membrane and the active intracellular domains of NOTCH paralogues were identifed by western blot. NOTCH1 and NOTCH2 active domains increased during pubertal stages while NOTCH3 and NOTCH4 active domains decreased, suggesting strikingly diferent involvement of NOTCH paralogues in bovine mammary gland development and diferentiation. The mRNA expression levels of the target genes HEY1 and HEY2 increased during peripuberty whereas no variation of HES1 mRNA levels was observed. The mRNA levels of the Notch ligands JAGGED1 and DELTA1 also increased gradually during development. In conclusion, Notch signaling system dynamically varies throughout the development of the mammary gland during puberty pointing to specifc time involvement of each component.Fil: Bonadeo, Nadia.
