    An investigation of mechanisms underlying the association between adult attachment insecurity and romantic relationship dissatisfaction

    Couple distress is common and associated with mental and physical health difficulties. Adult attachment insecurity has been associated with couple distress, but the mechanisms of this association need further investigation. This study investigated whether self-compassion and partner compassion mediated this association. 342 individuals and 75 couples completed an online questionnaire assessing attachment anxiety and avoidance, self- and partner compassion, and relationship quality and satisfaction. Partner compassion mediated the association between attachment avoidance and relationship quality and satisfaction. Self-compassion did not emerge as a direct mediator, but mediated between attachment insecurity and relationship measures through partner compassion. Self-compassion and partner compassion might play a role in relationship functioning. Interventions aiming to enhance compassion might be helpful in reducing couple distress

    The quality of intimate relationships has been found to be a strong negative predictor for individuals’ mental and physical health problems. A significant predictor of relationship quality is adult attachment insecurity, but the mechanism by which attachment insecurity affects relationship quality needs further investigation. This study investigated whether self-compassion and compassion for one’s partner mediated this association. Three-hundred-forty-two individuals participated in an online survey assessing attachment anxiety and avoidance, compassionate and uncompassionate attitude towards self and one’s partner, as well as relationship quality and relationship satisfaction. The results showed that low self-compassionate attitude mediated the association between attachment anxiety and poor relationship quality. Further, low compassionate and high uncompassionate attitude towards one’s partner mediated the association between attachment avoidance and poor relationship quality. No mediating effect was found for relationship satisfaction. Implications for interventions are discussed

    Temperature dependent photoreflectance study of Cu2SnS3 thin films produced by pulsed laser deposition

    The energy band structure of Cu2SnS3 (CTS) thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition was studied by photoreflectance spectroscopy (PR). The temperature-dependent PR spectra were measured in the range of T = 10–150 K. According to the Raman scattering analysis, the monoclinic crystal structure (C1c1) prevails in the studied CTS thin film; however, a weak contribution from cubic CTS (F-43m) was also detected. The PR spectra revealed the valence band splitting of CTS. Optical transitions at EA = 0.92 eV, EB = 1.04 eV, and EC = 1.08 eV were found for monoclinic CTS at low-temperature (T = 10 K). Additional optical transition was detected at EAC = 0.94 eV, and it was attributed to the low-temperature band gap of cubic CTS. All the identified optical transition energies showed a blueshift with increasing temperature, and the temperature coefficient dE/dT was about 0.1 meV/K

    A Multi-level Approach for Identifying Process Change in Cancer Pathways

    An understudied challenge within process mining is the area of process change over time. This is a particular concern in healthcare, where patterns of care emerge and evolve in response to individual patient needs and through complex interactions between people, process, technology and changing organisational structure. We propose a structured approach to analyse process change over time suitable for the complex domain of healthcare. Our approach applies a qualitative process comparison at three levels of abstraction: a holistic perspective summariz-ing patient pathways (process model level), a middle level perspective based on activity sequences for individuals (trace level), and a fine-grained detail focus on activities (activity level). Our aim is to identify points in time where a process changed (detection), to localise and characterise the change (localisation and characterisation), and to understand process evolution (unravelling). We illus-trate the approach using a case study of cancer pathways in Leeds Cancer Centre where we found evidence of agreement in process change identified at the pro-cess model and activity levels, but not at the trace level. In the experiment we show that this qualitative approach provides a useful understanding of process change over time. Examining change at the three levels provides confirmatory ev-idence of process change where perspectives agree, while contradictory evidence can lead to focused discussions with domain experts. The approach should be of interest to others dealing with processes that undergo complex change over time

    Superhumps in Cataclysmic Binaries. XXIII. V442 Ophiuchi and RX J1643.7+3402

    We report the results of long observing campaigns on two novalike variables: V442 Ophiuchi and RX J1643.7+3402. These stars have high-excitation spectra, complex line profiles signifying mass loss at particular orbital phases, and similar orbital periods (respectively 0.12433 and 0.12056 d). They are well-credentialed members of the SW Sex class of cataclysmic variables. Their light curves are also quite complex. V442 Oph shows periodic signals with periods of 0.12090(8) and 4.37(15) days, and RX J1643.7+3402 shows similar signals at 0.11696(8) d and 4.05(12) d. We interpret these short and long periods respectively as a "negative superhump" and the wobble period of the accretion disk. The superhump could then possibly arise from the heating of the secondary (and structures fixed in the orbital frame) by inner-disk radiation, which reaches the secondary relatively unimpeded since the disk is not coplanar. At higher frequencies, both stars show another type of variability: quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with a period near 1000 seconds. Underlying these strong signals of low stability may be weak signals of higher stability. Similar QPOs, and negative superhumps, are quite common features in SW Sex stars. Both can in principle be explained by ascribing strong magnetism to the white dwarf member of the binary; and we suggest that SW Sex stars are borderline AM Herculis binaries, usually drowned by a high accretion rate.     Mass hierarchy discrimination with atmospheric neutrinos in large volume ice/water Cherenkov detectors

    Large mass ice/water Cherenkov experiments, optimized to detect low energy (1-20 GeV) atmospheric neutrinos, have the potential to discriminate between normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies. The sensitivity depends on several model and detector parameters, such as the neutrino flux profile and normalization, the Earth density profile, the oscillation parameter uncertainties, and the detector effective mass and resolution. A proper evaluation of the mass hierarchy discrimination power requires a robust statistical approach. In this work, the Toy Monte Carlo, based on an extended unbinned likelihood ratio test statistic, was used. The effect of each model and detector parameter, as well as the required detector exposure, was then studied. While uncertainties on the Earth density and atmospheric neutrino flux profiles were found to have a minor impact on the mass hierarchy discrimination, the flux normalization, as well as some of the oscillation parameter (\Delta m^2_{31}, \theta_{13}, \theta_{23}, and \delta_{CP}) uncertainties and correlations resulted critical. Finally, the minimum required detector exposure, the optimization of the low energy threshold, and the detector resolutions were also investigated.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figure

    Previously, we have reported on the legal and ethical aspects and current practice of body donation in several European countries, reflecting cultural and religious variations as well as different legal and constitutional frameworks. We have also established good practice in body donation. Here we shall further extend the legal and ethical frameworks in place and also focus on novelties in the law and different directives. Of particular interest are points that address the commercialization of human bodies and body parts and weaknesses in the legal directives. Therefore, it is important to define what is ethical and what needs to be considered unethical in body donation and the subsequent utilisation of human bodies for teaching and research.peer-reviewe
