This article looks at the use of seafaring language in the Modern Era. It dwells especially on the words “escuadra”, “flota” and “convoy” (squadron, fleet and convoy), examining the mutations therein during the imperial wars waged between Charles V (Charles I of Spain) and Francis I of France, which favoured the birth and development of Atlantic piracy. It analyses the names of the various functional navies, created on an ad hoc basis as the various weak points appeared in Spain’s traffic with the Americas. The article also deals with the commanders of these groups and the names given to the onboard personnel. Specific examples are given of modern semantics with comments on the changes that occurred upon the advent of the Bourbons and the creation of the Military Navy of Spain (Marina Militar de España). The paper also investigates the rich semantics of the rudimentary naval artillery of the time and then winds up with a section on naval architecture, a field so vast it would really need an article in its own right

[EN] This article shows the most relevant aspects of this lengthy war, both from the polemological point of view, and that of the military profession, the latter specifically oriented towards the basic disciplines that every officer must study: Strategy, Tactics and Organization. At the time, Logistics was an integral part of Strategy, and Communications, still rudimentary, were not yet managed by specialists. Considering the length of the article, the author has not dealt with the military battles, combats or meetings that took place on the Peninsula

Morpho-physiological plant quality when biochar and vermicompost are used as growing media replacement in urban horticulture

Peat moss is the most used soilless substrate in the production of container plants in floriculture. Nevertheless, the drainage of peat bogs due to the peat extraction has increased the necessity of seeking products that could replace the peat that is used in plant production. Therefore, a comparative study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a biochar (B) - vermicompost (V) mixture, as a partial substitute for peat-based substrates, on the morpho-physiological characteristics of ornamental plants. Different blends containing B and V were compared to a baseline peat-based substrate (S) as control in the cultivation of two ornamental bedding plant species that are widely used in urban areas: geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) and petunia (Petunia hybrida). Plant growth and physiological parameters were assessed. Results showed that it is possible to grow container plants of these two species with commercial quality, using a peat-based substrate mixed with biochar and/or vermicompost (up to 30% V and 12% B). Plants in these substrates showed a similar or enhanced physiological response to those grown in the control using commercial peat-based substrate. This work was partially supported by the projects CTQ2013-46804-C2-1-R and CGL2016-76498-R of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF). The authors wish to thank the Horticultural Department and Carbon Sequestration and Management Center of Ohio State University for providing materials and facilities for this investigation. Similarly, the authors are deeply grateful to the following people: Mrs. Loewe and Dr. J. Altland from Application Technology Research Unit at Wooster OSU campus for their laboratory assistance in determining the physical properties substrate mixtures. Miss S. Stieve and Dr P. A fuzzy logic proposal for diagnosis multiple incipient faults in a power transformer

    Get PDF
For the safety and continuity of service in industrial electrical systems, the availability of transformers is essential. For this reason, it is necessary to develop intelligent fault diagnosis techniques to reduce repair and maintenance costs. Recently, several methods have been developed that use artificial intelligence techniques such as neural networks, support vector machines, hybrid techniques, etc., for the diagnosis of faults in power transformers using gas analysis. These methods, although they present very good results, encounter restrictions to determine the precise moment before the occurrence of multiple fault of small magnitude and are difficult to implement in practice. This document proposes a method to diagnose multiple incipient faults in a power transformer using fuzzy logic. The proposal, based on historical data from the composition of the gases dissolved in the oil, achieves a performance in the classification of multiple incipient fault of 98.3%. With reliable samples of dissolved gas, it guarantees an overall rate of accuracy in detecting incipient faults that is superior to that obtained by the most successful conventional methods in the industry. The proposal does not encounter generalization difficulties and constitutes a simple solution that allows determining the state of the transformer in service without affecting the continuity of the electricity supply

Paediatric out-of-hospital resuscitation in an area with scattered population (Galicia-Spain)

Abstract

Background

Cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA) is a rare event in childhood. Our objective was to determine the characteristics of paediatric CRA and the immediate results of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in Galicia, a community with a very scattered population.

Methods

All children (aged from newborn to 16 years old) who suffered an out-of-hospital CRA in Galicia and were assisted by the Public Foundation Medical Emergencies of Galicia-061 staff, from June 2002 to February 2005, were included in the study. Data were prospectively recorded following the Utstein's style guidelines.

Results

Thirty-one cases were analyzed (3.4 CRA annual cases per 100.000 paediatric population). The arrest was respiratory in 16.1% and cardiac in 83.9% of cases. CRA occurred at home in 58.1% of instances. Time CRA to initiation of CPR was shorter than 10 minutes in 32.2% and longer than 20 minutes in 29.0% of cases. 22.6% of children received bystander CPR. The first recorded rhythm was asystole in 67.7% of cases. Bag-mask ventilation was used in 67.7% and in 83.8% oro-tracheal intubation was done. A peripheral venous access was achieved in 67.7% and intraosseous access was used in 16.1% of patients. 93.5% of children were treated with adrenaline. After initial CPR, sustained restoration of spontaneous circulation was achieved in 38.7% of cases. Six children (19.4%) survived until hospital discharge. Four of 5 children with respiratory arrest survived, whereas only 2 of 26 children with cardiac arrest survived until hospital discharge.

Conclusion

Despite the handicap of a highly disseminated population, paediatric CRA characteristics and CPR results in Galicia are comparable to references from other communities. Programs to increase bystander CPR, equip laypeople with basic CPR skills and to update life support knowledge of health staff are needed to improve outcomes.</p

La responsabilidad social propia de las empresas de televisión de amplia cobertura: contenidos de riesgo

    Get PDF
