Background: Advance directives allow patients to put in writing the type of health care they want if they are unable to make decisions due to their medical condition. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in senior nursing students’ knowledge, attitudes, and confidence based on when the information is positioned in the curriculum. Theoretical: Social cognitive learning theory and Zimmerman’s self-regulation model provided the theoretical framework. Methods: This study reflected a non-experimental, exploratory design, with a convenience sample of senior nursing students from 2 different nursing programs in central Illinois. One program offers advance directive education in the first year and the other program offers the information in the second year. A total of 131 students participated in the study that used subscales of the Knowledge, Attitudinal, Experiential Survey on Advance Directives. Results: The group that received the information the second year rated themselves as having more confidence with advance directives. However, both groups scored low in the area of knowledge of advance directives, the Patient Self-Determination Act, and Illinois law. Students who reported higher knowledge levels had higher attitudes about end-of-life care. There was no difference in attitudes between the two groups. Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the need to review nursing curricula specifically relating to end-of-life care content and its placement in the curriculum

Transgressivity in Key Functional Traits Rather Than Phenotypic Plasticity Promotes Stress Tolerance in A Hybrid Cordgrass

Hybridization might promote offspring fitness via a greater tolerance to environmental stressors due to heterosis and higher levels of phenotypic plasticity. Thus, analyzing the phenotypic expression of hybrids provides an opportunity to elucidate further plant responses to environmental stress. In the case of coastal salt marshes, sea level rise subjects hybrids, and their parents, to longer tidal submergence and higher salinity. We analyzed the phenotypic expression patterns in the hybrid Spartina densiflora x foliosa relative to its parental species, native S. foliosa, and invasive S. densiflora, from the San Francisco Estuary when exposed to contrasting salinities and inundations in a mesocosm experiment. 37% of the recorded traits displayed no variability among parents and hybrids, 3% showed an additive inheritance, 37% showed mid-parent heterosis, 18% showed best-parent heterosis, and 5% presented worst-parent heterosis. Transgressivity, rather than phenotypic plasticity, in key functional traits of the hybrid, such as tiller height, conveyed greater stress tolerance to the hybrid when compared to the tolerance of its parents. As parental trait variability increased, phenotypic transgressivity of the hybrid increased and it was more important in response to inundation than salinity. Increases in salinity and inundation associated with sea level rise will amplify the superiority of the hybrid over its parental species. These results provide evidence of transgressive traits as an underlying source of adaptive variation that can facilitate plant invasions. The adaptive evolutionary process of hybridization is thought to support an increased invasiveness of plant species and their rapid evolution

The U.S. Constitution requires that each decade, we take a count–or a census of America’s population. The 2020 Census will count every person living in the Nation once, only once, and in the right place. In 2020, the Census Bureau is implementing innovations to make it easier than ever to respond to the census. For the first time, the public will be able to participate in the census online, by phone, or on paper. We are also building a more accurate address list and automating our field operationsall while keeping information safe and confidential. Come and learn what your community needs to do now to get ready. This session will provide an early overview of 2020 Census innovations, timeline, critical Geographic program deadlines, and Community Partnership and Engagement program outreach plans

The evaluation of emotion regulation has been focused on the cognitive component and the emotion dysregulation. However, it is also important to include emotion identification and modulation of the response for the evaluation of the regulatory process. The aim of this study was to develop a multidimensional measure of emotion regulation process in adolescents and to examine its factorial structure and reliability. An instrumental study was performed with 887 Mexican adolescents aged 13 to 18. A preliminary version of the Multidimensional Scale of Emotion Regulation for Adolescents (MSERA) was developed based on focus groups and considering the assumptions of the theoretical models. The exploratory factor analysis yielded 56 items distributed in eight factors: Recognition of positive emotions, Expression of positive emotions, Emotional control, Suppression, Cognitive change, Physical reactions, Recognition of negative emotions and Difficulty to regulate. A confirmatory factor analysis using the Robust Unweighted Least Squares, corroborated the initial solution of eight factors and showed acceptable fit indexes, considering 47 items. Ordinal alpha coefficients obtained for the factors of the final model, indicated a good internal consistency (.85-.95). Results suggest that the MSERA can be used as a valid and reliable measure of emotion regulation in adolescents.

This article analyzes the importance of the family in the psychological development of children. Within the family, values, a particular vision of the world, and a system of beliefs and rules are formed; all of this within a determined cultural pattern. The convenience of studying the ideas and beliefs that couples have about raising and educating children is emphasized, given that these beliefs determine the practices of upbringing children. The beliefs on upbringing and the education given to kids are analyzed on pregnant women from Seville in their third trimester of pregnancy. The parent’s ideas survey was used to find out that most of the interviewees had information about raising children. However, there was a variation in the attributes of children’s conduct, which is discussed in terms of the influence of the culture, education level, age, etc. of the mothers
