Tradução da Introdução do livro Explorations in Navajo Poetry and Poetics, de Anthony K. Webster (Albuquerque: New Mexico University Press, 2009), páginas 1 a 15.

The pattern and timing of breathing during incremental exercise: a normative study

    Get PDF
Clinical evaluation of the pattern and timing of breathing during submaximal exercise can be valuable for the identification of the mechanical ventilatory consequences of different disease processes and for assessing the efficacy of certain interventions.Sedentary individuals (60 male/60 female, aged 20-80 yrs) were randomly selected from >8,000 subjects and submitted to ramp incremental cycle ergometry. Tidal volume (V-T)/ resting inspiratory capacity, respiratory frequency, total respiratory time (Trot), inspiratory time (T-I), expiratory time (T-E), duty cycle (TI/Ttot) and mean inspiratory flow (V-T/T-I) were analysed at selected submaximal ventilatory intensities.Senescence and female sex were associated with a more tachypnoeic breathing pattern during isoventilation. the decline in T-tot was proportional to the TI and TE P reductions, i.e. T-I/T-tot was remarkably constant across age strata, independent of sex. the pattern, but not timing, of breathing was also influenced by weight and height; a set of demographically and anthropometrically based prediction equations are therefore presented. These data provide a frame of reference for assessing the normality of some clinically useful indices of the pattern and timing of breathing during incremental cycle ergometry in sedentary males and females aged 20-80 yrs.Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Pulmonary Funct & Clin Exercise Physiol Unit, Div Resp, Dept Med,Paulista Sch Med, BR-04020050 São Paulo, BrazilUniv Glasgow, Ctr Exercise Sci & Med, Inst Biol & Life Sci, Glasgow, Lanark, ScotlandUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Pulmonary Funct & Clin Exercise Physiol Unit, Div Resp, Dept Med,Paulista Sch Med, BR-04020050 São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

The bovine milk microbiota: insights and perspectives from -omics studies

    Get PDF
Recent significant progress in culture-independent techniques, together with the parallel development of -omics technologies and data analysis capabilities, have led to a new perception of the milk microbiota as a complex microbial community with great diversity and multifaceted biological roles, living in an environment that was until recently believed to be sterile. In this review, we summarize and discuss the latest findings on the milk microbiota in dairy cows, with a focus on the role it plays in bovine physiology and health. Following an introduction on microbial communities and the importance of their study, we present an overview of the -omics methods currently available for their characterization, and outline the potential offered by a systems biology approach encompassing metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, and metametabolomics. Then, we review the recent discoveries on the dairy cow milk microbiome enabled by the application of -omics approaches. Learning from studies in humans and in the mouse model, and after a description of the endogenous route hypothesis, we discuss the role of the milk microbiota in the physiology and health of both the mother and the offspring, and report how it can be changed by farming practices and during infection. In conclusion, we shortly outline the impact of the milk microbiota on the quality of milk and of dairy products

Synthetic approaches for accessing rare-earth analogues of UiO-66

    Get PDF
Rare-earth (RE) analogues of UiO-66 with non-functionalised 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate linkers are synthesised for the first time, and a series of synthetic approaches is provided to troubleshoot the synthesis. RE-UiO-66 analogues are fully characterised, and demonstrate a high degree of crystallinity, high surface area and thermal stability, consistent with the UiO-66 archetype

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy among teenagers is increasingly frequent and its consequences need to be studied in order to identify possible problems regarding children's development during the first years of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate growth and development of infants born to teenager mothers compared to those born to adult mothers. METHODS: 122 infants of teenager mothers and 123 of adult mothers born at the maternity hospital of a university hospital at Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, were enrolled. At study, children ages ranged from 11-13 months. Social and medical characteristics were analyzed: information regarding birth, anthropometric measures, need of hospitalization during the first year, use of day care centers, neurological and psychomotor development. Data were analyzed by SAS and SPSS softwares. Chi-square and analysis of covariance were applied, being significant a p value <0.05. RESULTS: With one year of age, infants of teenager mothers had lower weight and body mass index than the controls. No differences among groups were noted regarding developmental milestones. CONCLUSIONS: Children of teenager mothers have similar development but worse growth than those of adult mothers.OBJETIVO: A gravidez e o parto na adolescência estão aumentando e suas conseqüências têm sido estudadas para identificar possíveis prejuízos para o desenvolvimento das crianças, ao longo dos primeiros anos de vida.
