    Additive-mediated size control of MOF nanoparticles

    Parameterized Approximation Schemes using Graph Widths

    Combining the techniques of approximation algorithms and parameterized complexity has long been considered a promising research area, but relatively few results are currently known. In this paper we study the parameterized approximability of a number of problems which are known to be hard to solve exactly when parameterized by treewidth or clique-width. Our main contribution is to present a natural randomized rounding technique that extends well-known ideas and can be used for both of these widths. Applying this very generic technique we obtain approximation schemes for a number of problems, evading both polynomial-time inapproximability and parameterized intractability bounds

    Hitting forbidden subgraphs in graphs of bounded treewidth

    We study the complexity of a generic hitting problem H-Subgraph Hitting, where given a fixed pattern graph HH and an input graph GG, the task is to find a set XV(G)X \subseteq V(G) of minimum size that hits all subgraphs of GG isomorphic to HH. In the colorful variant of the problem, each vertex of GG is precolored with some color from V(H)V(H) and we require to hit only HH-subgraphs with matching colors. Standard techniques shows that for every fixed HH, the problem is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by the treewidth of GG; however, it is not clear how exactly the running time should depend on treewidth. For the colorful variant, we demonstrate matching upper and lower bounds showing that the dependence of the running time on treewidth of GG is tightly governed by μ(H)\mu(H), the maximum size of a minimal vertex separator in HH. That is, we show for every fixed HH that, on a graph of treewidth tt, the colorful problem can be solved in time 2O(tμ(H))V(G)2^{\mathcal{O}(t^{\mu(H)})}\cdot|V(G)|, but cannot be solved in time 2o(tμ(H))V(G)O(1)2^{o(t^{\mu(H)})}\cdot |V(G)|^{O(1)}, assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). Furthermore, we give some preliminary results showing that, in the absence of colors, the parameterized complexity landscape of H-Subgraph Hitting is much richer.Comment: A full version of a paper presented at MFCS 201

    (Total) Vector Domination for Graphs with Bounded Branchwidth

    Given a graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) of order nn and an nn-dimensional non-negative vector d=(d(1),d(2),,d(n))d=(d(1),d(2),\ldots,d(n)), called demand vector, the vector domination (resp., total vector domination) is the problem of finding a minimum SVS\subseteq V such that every vertex vv in VSV\setminus S (resp., in VV) has at least d(v)d(v) neighbors in SS. The (total) vector domination is a generalization of many dominating set type problems, e.g., the dominating set problem, the kk-tuple dominating set problem (this kk is different from the solution size), and so on, and its approximability and inapproximability have been studied under this general framework. In this paper, we show that a (total) vector domination of graphs with bounded branchwidth can be solved in polynomial time. This implies that the problem is polynomially solvable also for graphs with bounded treewidth. Consequently, the (total) vector domination problem for a planar graph is subexponential fixed-parameter tractable with respectto kk, where kk is the size of solution.Comment: 16 page

    What Is an Act of Engagement? Between the Social, Collegial and Institutional Protocols

    Engagement is not synonymous with commitment, even though both words are used in translations between English, French, and German. However, engagement is also not some supplementary phenomenon or a technical term that the phrase social acts already includes in itself or that the concepts of ‘commitment’ or ‘joint commitment’ somehow necessarily imply. In this article I would like to describe a special kind of social act and determine the function they have in relation between various agents. Most importantly, I would like to define their significance in the transformation of a group into an institution or higher order entity. My premise is that there are acts whose aim is to engage all others, since they refer to all of us together, and in so doing reduce negative (social) “acts” as well as various asocial behaviors within a group or institution. In this sense, engaged acts could alternatively also belong to a kind of institutional act, since they introduce certain adjustments to the institution, changing or modifying its rules, increasing its consistency and efficiency.First book series in Philosophy of the Social Sciences that specifically focuses on Philosophy of Sociality and Social Ontology.     On Structural Parameterizations of the Bounded-Degree Vertex Deletion Problem

    We study the parameterized complexity of the Bounded-Degree Vertex Deletion problem (BDD), where the aim is to find a maximum induced subgraph whose maximum degree is below a given degree bound. Our focus lies on parameters that measure the structural properties of the input instance. We first show that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by a wide range of fairly restrictive structural parameters such as the feedback vertex set number, pathwidth, treedepth, and even the size of a minimum vertex deletion set into graphs of pathwidth and treedepth at most three. We thereby resolve an open question stated in Betzler, Bredereck, Niedermeier and Uhlmann (2012) concerning the complexity of BDD parameterized by the feedback vertex set number. On the positive side, we obtain fixed-parameter algorithms for the problem with respect to the decompositional parameter treecut width and a novel problem-specific parameter called the core fracture number

    Fixed-Parameter Algorithms in Analysis of Heuristics for Extracting Networks in Linear Programs

    We consider the problem of extracting a maximum-size reflected network in a linear program. This problem has been studied before and a state-of-the-art SGA heuristic with two variations have been proposed. In this paper we apply a new approach to evaluate the quality of SGA\@. In particular, we solve majority of the instances in the testbed to optimality using a new fixed-parameter algorithm, i.e., an algorithm whose runtime is polynomial in the input size but exponential in terms of an additional parameter associated with the given problem. This analysis allows us to conclude that the the existing SGA heuristic, in fact, produces solutions of a very high quality and often reaches the optimal objective values. However, SGA contain two components which leave some space for improvement: building of a spanning tree and searching for an independent set in a graph. In the hope of obtaining even better heuristic, we tried to replace both of these components with some equivalent algorithms. We tried to use a fixed-parameter algorithm instead of a greedy one for searching of an independent set. But even the exact solution of this subproblem improved the whole heuristic insignificantly. Hence, the crucial part of SGA is building of a spanning tree. We tried three different algorithms, and it appears that the Depth-First search is clearly superior to the other ones in building of the spanning tree for SGA. Thereby, by application of fixed-parameter algorithms, we managed to check that the existing SGA heuristic is of a high quality and selected the component which required an improvement. This allowed us to intensify the research in a proper direction which yielded a superior variation of SGA

    Modern rhodolith-dominated carbonates at Punta Chivato, Mexico

    Rhodolith-dominated carbonate environments, characterized by high abundances of free-living coralline algae, have been described globally from a wide range of Recent and fossil shallow marine settings. In the present-day warm-temperate Gulf of California, Mexico, rhodolith-dominated systems are important contributors to carbonate production. One of the most prolific rhodolith factories is located on the Punta Chivato shelf, in the central Gulf of California, where due to a lack of input of terrigenous material from the arid hinterland, carbonate content averages 79%. Punta Chivato rhodoliths thrive above the shallow euphotic zone under normal saline, warm-temperate and meso- to eutrophic conditions. A detailed sedimentologic study combined with acoustic seafloor mapping indicates the presence of extensive rhodolith-dominated facies at subtidal water depth covering an area of \u3e17 km2. Additional facies, surrounding the rhodolith-dominated facies include a fine-grained molluscan, a transitional bivalve-rhodolith and a bivalve facies. While the Punta Chivato shelf yields average abundances of 38% rhodolith-derived coralline algal components in the gravel-sized sediment fraction, the rhodolith facies itself is characterized by more than 60% coralline algal components. Other important carbonate producers at Punta Chivato include bivalves (35%), bryozoa (11%) and gastropods (8%). The present study shows that acoustic sediment mapping yields highly resolved continuous coverage of the seafloor and can distinguish modern rhodolith facies from surrounding sediment. This has important implications for quantifying rhodolith-dominated settings globally, as well as for ecological and conservation studies. © Publications Scientifiques du Muséum national d\u27Histoire naturelle, Paris

    Cyclic anoxia and organic rich carbonate sediments within a drowned carbonate platform linked to Antarctic ice volume changes: Late Oligocene-early Miocene Maldives

    This paper reports on the newly discovered occurrence of thick sequences (∼100 m) of Late Oligocene and Early Miocene (∼24.9 to ∼20 Ma) interbedded organic-rich sediments (sapropels) and pelagic (organic poor) carbonates at Sites U1466 and U1468 drilled in the Maldives archipelago during the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 359. This occurrence is unusual in that this sequence is located > 1000 m above the surrounding ocean floor within an inter-atoll basin and not linked to any known global oceanic events. Total organic content reaches as high as 35% in the darker layers, while the interbedded carbonates have concentrations of less than 0.1%. Trace elements characteristic of anoxic waters, such as Mo, V, Cr, U, and Pb, correlate positively with concentrations of organic carbon. Nitrogen isotopic data show no evidence that the intervals of high total organic carbon are related to enhanced productivity driven by upwelling. Instead, high organic carbon is associated with intervals of anoxia. We propose that sea-level fluctuations linked to changes in Antarctic ice volume restricted exchange with the open ocean causing bottom waters of the inter-atoll basin to become anoxic periodically. The architecture of the platform at the end of the Oligocene, combined with the global sea-level highstand, set the stage for orbitally-driven sea-level changes producing cyclic deposition of sapropels. The proposed mechanism may serve as an analogue for other occurrences of organic carbon-rich sediments within carbonate platform settings.</p

    Psychosocial stress at work and perceived quality of care among clinicians in surgery

    Abstract Background Little is known about the association between job stress and job performance among surgeons, although physicians' well-being could be regarded as an important quality indicator. This paper examines associations between psychosocial job stress and perceived health care quality among German clinicians in surgery. Methods Survey data of 1,311 surgeons from 489 hospitals were analysed. Psychosocial stress at work was measured by the effort-reward imbalance model (ERI) and the demand-control model (job strain). The quality of health care was evaluated by physicians' self-assessed performance, service quality and error frequency. Data were collected in a nationwide standardised mail survey. 53% of the contacted hospitals sent back the questionnaire; the response rate of the clinicians in the participating hospitals was about 65%. To estimate the association between job stress and quality of care multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted. Results Clinicians exposed to job stress have an increased risk of reporting suboptimal quality of care. Magnitude of the association varies depending on the respective job stress model and the indicator of health care quality used. Odds ratios, adjusted for gender, occupational position and job experience vary between 1.04 (CI 0.70-1.57) and 3.21 (CI 2.23-4.61). Conclusion Findings indicate that theoretical models of psychosocial stress at work can enrich the analysis of effects of working conditions on health care quality. Moreover, results suggest interventions for job related health promotion measures to improve the clinicians' working conditions, their quality of care and their patients' health.</p
