    Allier kastom et tabu au musée : gestion et exposition des objets du Vanuatu

    Au Vanuatu, secret et sacré sont fortement liés. Des règlementations culturelles dictent avec précision les accès et restrictions de chacun concernant les objets et savoirs se rapportant au sacré. Ces codifications et les traditions qu’elles touchent ont une grande importance dans le cadre de l’affirmation identitaire de cette jeune république. Cet article aborde la gestion et l’exposition de tels objets dans différents contextes, au sein du centre culturel du Vanuatu à Port-Vila (Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta) d’une part et lors d’expositions temporaires organisées par des musées en Europe ou dans les îles du Pacifique d’autre part. Notre propos interroge ainsi les variations de sens et d’appréciation de ces objets sacrés et la possibilité d’un dialogue culturel autour de leur gestion.Secret and sacred are extremely linked in Vanuatu. Some cultural rights precisely dictate and restrict how people can access to sacred objects and knowledges. These rules, as well as the traditions they are connected to, are also important for affirming identity inside this young state. This paper questions how to manage and exhibit those sacred objects in different settings, in the Vanuatu cultural center in Port-Vila (Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta), as well as in the case of temporary exhibitions organised by museums in Europe or in Pacific islands. Thus, we discuss the different significations of those objects and the possibility to create a cultural dialogue regarding their management

    Methods to Assess the Protective Efficacy of Emollients against Climatic and Chemical Aggressors

    Exposure to harsh environmental conditions, such as cold and dry climate and chemicals can have an abrasive effect on skin. Skin care products containing ingredients that avert these noxious effects by reinforcement of the barrier function can be tested using in vivo models. The objective is to use in vivo models to assess the efficacy of emollients in protecting skin against climatic and chemical insults. A first model used a stream of cooled air to mimic cold wind. A second used sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) under patch as chemical aggressor. In the model with simulated wind exposure, the untreated exposed area had a significant decrease in hydration. In contrast, application of an emollient caused a significant increase in hydration that was maintained after wind exposure. In the second model with SLS exposure, application of a barrier cream before SLS patch significantly reduced the dehydrating effect of SLS with a significant difference in variation between both areas. Application of the cream reduced TEWL, indicative of a physical reinforcement of the skin barrier. The two presented test methods, done under standardized conditions, can be used for evaluation of protective effect of emollient, by reinforcing the barrier function against experimentally induced skin dehydration

    Mapping and Describing Geospatial Data to Generalize Complex Models: The Case of LittoSIM-GEN

    For some scientific questions, empirical data are essential to develop reliable simulation models. These data usually come from different sources with diverse and heterogeneous formats. The design of complex data-driven models is often shaped by the structure of the data available in research projects. Hence, applying such models to other case studies requires either to get similar data or to transform new data to fit the model inputs. It is the case of agent-based models (ABMs) that use advanced data structures such as Geographic Information Systems data. We faced this problem in the LittoSIM-GEN project when generalizing our participatory flooding model (LittoSIM) to new territories. From this experience, we provide a mapping approach to structure, describe, and automatize the integration of geospatial data into ABMs

    Associated relaps factors in Le Fort I osteotomy. A retrospective study of 54 cases

    PURPOSE: The Le Fort I osteotomy (LFI) procedure is commonly used to restore morpho-functional balance. The goal of maxillofacial surgeons with this procedure is to achieve occlusal stability. To identify factors associated with relapse after maxillary advancement in cleft lip and palate patients, the one-year post-operative stability of Le Fort I osteotomy was evaluated. METHODS: Horizontal and vertical relapse were analysed on lateral cephalograms by retrospectively using tracing paper in an orthonormal landmark in 54 patients undergoing unilateral cleft lip and palate surgery who were monitored at Nantes University Hospital. The lateral cephalograms were performed pre-operatively, immediately post-operatively, and after one year. Several variables were studied such as population data, intra-operative and post-operative surgical treatment, and surgical movement. RESULTS: At point A, the subspinale point, the mean advancement during surgery was 4.2 mm, with a relapse of 0.8 mm (20.1%). The mean downward movement was 2.0 mm in 26 patients who had a clockwise rotation of the maxilla, with a relapse of 0.6 mm (28.4%). The mean upward movement was 2.3 mm in 27 patients who had a counterclockwise rotation, with a deterioration of 0.2 mm (7%). A 7-millimetre surgical advancement corresponded to the threshold value beyond which relapse appeared to be significantly greater but still less than two millimetres in 75% of cases. CONCLUSION: The degree of advancement appears to be the only variable correlated with the amplitude of the relapse

    Diagnosis, treatment and recurrence of a mandibular Langerhans cell histiocytosis: a three-year follow-up case report

    Introduction: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an abnormal clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells secondary to immune process, mutation of oncogene or genetic predispositions. It preferentially affects bone, lung and skin. The incidence is 2–6 cases per million per year. Prognosis is variable and depends on number and location of lesions, and impact of the initial treatment. Oral lesions may be the first sign of LCH as illustrated by the present case. Observation: A 24-year-old male consulted first for severe gingival inflammation, teeth mobilities and alveolar bone loss with a suspicion of LCH. A pulmonary involvement was secondarily revealed by tomodensitometry. Histological examination, from gingival biopsy, confirmed the diagnostic of LCH, showing cells positive for the anti-CD1A antibody. The patient was managed by oral surgery and chemotherapy approaches. Alveolar bone loss significantly reduced. But 2 years and a half after the diagnosis, a recurrence was noted and managed by surgical approach. After a three-year follow-up, no recurrence was noted. Conclusion: Oral lesions can be inaugural manifestations of LCH. The dentist has an essential role in the early detection of these lesions

    Combining ecophysiological modelling and quantitative trait locus analysis to identify key elementary processes underlying tomato fruit sugar concentration

    A mechanistic model predicting the accumulation of tomato fruit sugars was developed in order (i) to dissect the relative influence of three underlying processes: assimilate supply (S), metabolic transformation of sugars into other compounds (M), and dilution by water uptake (D); and (ii) to estimate the genetic variability of S, M, and D. The latter was estimated in a population of 20 introgression lines derived from the introgression of a wild tomato species (Solanum chmielewskii) into S. lycopersicum, grown under two contrasted fruit load conditions. Low load systematically decreased D in the whole population, while S and M were targets of genotype×fruit load interactions. The sugar concentration positively correlated to S and D when the variation was due to genetic introgressions, while it positively correlated to S and M when the variation was due to changes in fruit load. Co-localizations between quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for sugar concentration and QTLs for S, M, and D allowed hypotheses to be proposed on the processes putatively involved at the QTLs. Among the five QTLs for sugar concentration, four co-localized with QTLs for S, M, and D with similar allele effects. Moreover, the processes underlying QTLs for sugar accumulation changed according to the fruit load condition. Finally, for some genotypes, the processes underlying sugar concentration compensated in such a way that they did not modify the sugar concentration. By uncoupling genetic from physiological relationships between processes, these results provide new insights into further understanding of tomato fruit sugar accumulation

    Core-Collapse Supernovae and Host Galaxy Stellar Populations

    We have used images and spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to examine the host galaxies of 519 nearby supernovae. The colors at the sites of the explosions, as well as chemical abundances, and specific star formation rates of the host galaxies provide circumstantial evidence on the origin of each supernova type. We examine separately SN II, SN IIn, SN IIb, SN Ib, SN Ic, and SN Ic with broad lines (SN Ic-BL). For host galaxies that have multiple spectroscopic fibers, we select the fiber with host radial offset most similar to that of the SN. Type Ic SN explode at small host offsets, and their hosts have exceptionally strongly star-forming, metal-rich, and dusty stellar populations near their centers. The SN Ic-BL and SN IIb explode in exceptionally blue locations, and, in our sample, we find that the host spectra for SN Ic-BL show lower average oxygen abundances than those for SN Ic. SN IIb host fiber spectra are also more metal-poor than those for SN Ib, although a significant difference exists for only one of two strong-line diagnostics. SN Ic-BL host galaxy emission lines show strong central specific star formation rates. In contrast, we find no strong evidence for different environments for SN IIn compared to the sites of SN II. Because our supernova sample is constructed from a variety of sources, there is always a risk that sampling methods can produce misleading results. We have separated the supernovae discovered by targeted surveys from those discovered by galaxy-impartial searches to examine these questions and show that our results do not depend sensitively on the discovery technique.Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal (22 July 2012), conclusions not changed, extended discussion of sample construction and updated SN spectroscopic type

    Genetic and physiological analysis of tomato fruit weight and composition: influence of carbon availability on QTL detection

    Throughout tomato domestication, a large increase in fruit size was associated with a loss of dry matter and sugar contents. This study aims to dissect the contributions of genetic variation and the physiological processes underlying the relationships between fruit growth and the accumulation of dry matter and sugars. Fruit quality traits and physiological parameters were measured on 20 introgression lines derived from the introgression of Solanum chmielewskii into S. lycopersicum, under high (HL, unpruned trusses) and low (LL, trusses pruned to one fruit) fruit load conditions. Inter- and intra-genotypic correlations among traits were estimated and quantitative trait loci (QTL) for size, composition, and physiological traits were mapped. LL increased almost all traits, but the response of sugar content was genotype-dependent, involving either dilution effects or differences in carbon allocation to sugars. Genotype×fruit load interactions were significant for most traits and only 30% of the QTL were stable under both fruit loads. Many QTL for fresh weight and cell or seed numbers co-localized. Eleven clusters of QTL for fresh weight and dry matter or sugar content were detected, eight with opposite allele effects and three with negative effects. Two genotypic antagonistic relationships, between fresh weight and dry matter content and between cell number and cell size, were significant only under HL; the second could be interpreted as a competition for carbohydrates among cells. The role of cuticular conductance, fruit transpiration or cracking in the relationship between fruit fresh weight and composition was also emphasized at the genetic and physiological levels
