Se analiza el origen de la animadversión social hacia los epilépticos, que tiene una raíz psicosociológica, estudiándose los grupos sociales que contribuyen a su mantenimiento. Se concluye afirmando que es necesario un esfuerzo de los profesionales de la salud para propiciar la plena incorporación de estos sujetos en la sociedad

    Validation of 3D neutronic-thermalhydraulic coupled codes RELAP5/PARCSv2.7 and TRACEv5.0P3/PARCSv3.0 against a PWR control rod drop transient

    [EN] In nuclear safety field, neutronic and thermalhydraulic codes performance is an important issue. New capabilities implementation, as well as models and tools improvements are a significant part of the community effort in looking for better Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) designs. A procedure to analyze the PWR response to local deviations on neutronic or thermalhydraulic parameters is being developed. This procedure includes the simulation of Incore and Excore neutron flux detectors signals. A control rod drop real plant transient is used to validate the used codes and their new capabilities. Cross-section data are obtained by means of the SIMTAB methodology. Detailed thermalhydraulic models were developed: RELAP5 and TRACE models simulate three different azimuthal zones. Besides, TRACE model is performed with a fully 3D core, thus, the cross-flow can be obtained. A cartesian vessel represents the fuel assemblies and a cylindrical vessel the bypass and downcomer.     Sorsby syndrome: Report of a case representing the second reported family

    Dismorfología y Genética ClínicaIn 1935, Sorsby [Br J Ophthalmol. 1935; 19:65-90] described a family with several affected individuals presenting with bilateral coloboma of macula, type B brachydactyly affecting hands and feet, and unilateral renal agenesis in one of its members. We describe a newborn girl presenting with the same pattern of congenital anomalies as the patients of the family originally described by Sorsby (OMIM 120400). However, the current case has as additional findings a single umbilical artery, and an anomaly of pulmonary vascularization consisting in: a ring in the lower right lobar artery and sequestration of the lower right lung lobe. Therefore, despite that our patient adds new clinical variability, it is not possible to disregard the diagnosis of Sorsby syndrome, because such clinical variability was also observed in the affected members of the original family described by Sorsby and some individuals of the next generations of the same family, according to the report by Thompson and Baraitser [J Med Genet. 1988; 25:313-321]. Based on the observed genealogy pattern of affected members in the only family published, it is considered that this syndrome is due to an autosomal dominant gene. The baby described here, is the first case in the family. She had a normal karyotype (~850 bands) and the subtelomeric Multi-FISH was also normal. Her father was 39 years old and, therefore, an age-related new mutation could be evaluated. The frequency of Sorsby syndrome is unknown, since only the original family has been published so far. However, as the case described here is part of the ECEMC Registry, we can estimate that its frequency is at least 1:2,750,000 newborn infants. We consider that, even in the “molecular era”, it remains important to clinically describe those extremely rare syndromes, in order to define their characteristics and clinical expressions. These aspects are essential to define the prognosis, clinical management and information to the family, and can help also to determine the gene(s) or pathogenetic pathways involved in their origin.N

    Regional Genetic Structure in the Aquatic Macrophyte Ruppia cirrhosa Suggests Dispersal by Waterbirds

    The evolutionary history of the genus Ruppia has been shaped by hybridization, polyploidisation and vicariance that have resulted in a problematic taxonomy. Recent studies provided insight into species circumscription, organelle takeover by hybridization, and revealed the importance of verifying species identification to avoid distorting effects of mixing different species, when estimating population connectivity. In the present study, we use microsatellite markers to determine population diversity and connectivity patterns in Ruppia cirrhosa including two spatial scales: (1) from the Atlantic Iberian coastline in Portugal to the Siculo-Tunisian Strait in Sicily and (2) within the Iberian Peninsula comprising the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition. The higher diversity in the Mediterranean Sea suggests that populations have had longer persistence there, suggesting a possible origin and/or refugial area for the species. The high genotypic diversities highlight the importance of sexual reproduction for survival and maintenance of populations. Results revealed a regional population structure matching a continent-island model, with strong genetic isolation and low gene flow between populations. This population structure could be maintained by waterbirds, acting as occasional dispersal vectors.     Isolation of microplastics in biota-rich seawater samples and marine organisms.

Please cite the published version.Microplastic litter is a pervasive pollutant present in aquatic systems across the globe. A range of marine organisms have the capacity to ingest microplastics, resulting in adverse health effects. Developing methods to accurately quantify microplastics in productive marine waters, and those internalized by marine organisms, is of growing importance. Here we investigate the efficacy of using acid, alkaline and enzymatic digestion techniques in mineralizing biological material from marine surface trawls to reveal any microplastics present. Our optimized enzymatic protocol can digest >97% (by weight) of the material present in plankton-rich seawater samples without destroying any microplastic debris present. In applying the method to replicate marine samples from the western English Channel, we identified 0.27 microplastics m(-3). The protocol was further used to extract microplastics ingested by marine zooplankton under laboratory conditions.     Cognitive impairment in patients with Fibromyalgia syndrome as assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study evaluated the frequency of cognitive impairment in patients with Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed baseline data from all 46 patients with FMS and 92 age- and sex-matched controls per diagnosis of neuropathic (NeP) or mixed pain (MP) selected from a larger prospective study.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>FMS had a slight but statistically significant lower score in the adjusted MMSE score (26.9; 95% CI 26.7-27.1) than either NeP (27.3; 95% CI 27.2-27.4) or MP (27.3; 27.2-27.5). The percentage of patients with congnitive impairment (adjusted MMSE ≤ 26) was numerically higher in FMS (15%; 95% CI 6.3-29) compared with NeP (5%; 95% CI 1.8-12.2) or MP (5%; 95% CI 1.8-12.2) and higher than in the same age stratum of the general population (0.05%).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Compared with the population reference value, patients with FMS showed high frequency of cognitive impairment.</p

    The human immune response to respiratory syncytial virus infection

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important etiological agent of respiratory infections, particularly in children. Much information regarding the immune response to RSV comes from animal models and in vitro studies. Here, we provide a comprehensive description of the human immune response to RSV infection, based on a systematic literature review of research on infected humans. There is an initial strong neutrophil response to RSV infection in humans, which is positively correlated with disease severity and mediated by interleukin-8 (IL-8). Dendritic cells migrate to the lungs as the primary antigen-presenting cell. An initial systemic T-cell lymphopenia is followed by a pulmonary CD8(+) T-cell response, mediating viral clearance. Humoral immunity to reinfection is incomplete, but RSV IgG and IgA are protective. B-cell-stimulating factors derived from airway epithelium play a major role in protective antibody generation. Gamma interferon (IFN-γ) has a strongly protective role, and a Th2-biased response may be deleterious. Other cytokines (particularly IL-17A), chemokines (particularly CCL-5 and CCL-3), and local innate immune factors (including cathelicidins and IFN-λ) contribute to pathogenesis. In summary, neutrophilic inflammation is incriminated as a harmful response, whereas CD8(+) T cells and IFN-γ have protective roles. These may represent important therapeutic targets to modulate the immunopathogenesis of RSV infection
