    High turnover in electro-oxidation of alcohols and ethers with a glassy carbon-supported phenanthroimidazole mediator.

    Glassy carbon electrodes covalently modified with a phenanthroimidazole mediator promote electrochemical alcohol and ether oxidation: three orders of magnitude increase in TON, to ∼15 000 in each case, was observed compared with homogeneous mediated reactions. We propose the deactivation pathways in homogeneous solution are prevented by the immobilization: modified electrode reversibility is increased for a one-electron oxidation reaction. The modified electrodes were used to catalytically oxidize p-anisyl alcohol and 1-((benzyloxy)methyl)-4-methoxybenzene, selectively, to the corresponding benzaldehyde and benzyl ester, respectively

    Insolation and gacial meltwater influence on sea‐ice and circulation variability in the Northeastern Labrador Sea during the last glacial period

    The variable amounts of ice rafted debris (IRD) and foraminifers in North Atlantic sediments are related to the abrupt, millennial-scale alteration from Greenland stadials to interstadials during the last glacial period and indicate past ice sheet instabilities, changes in sea-ice cover and productivity. In the Norwegian Sea, Greenland stadials were likely characterized by an extensive, near-perennial sea-ice cover whereas Greenland interstadials were seasonally ice-free. The variability in other areas, such as the Labrador Sea, remains, however, obscure. We therefore investigated deep-sea sediment core GS16-204-22CC retrieved south of Greenland. Using a multiproxy approach, we distinguish two sediment regimes and hence different environmental conditions between ca. 65 and 25 ka b2k. Regime 1 (similar to 65-49 ka b2k) is characterized by the dominance of planktic foraminifers in the sediments. During late MIS4 and early MIS3, the site was covered by near-perennial sea-ice with occasional periods of iceberg discharge. During the younger part of regime 1 the northeastern Labrador Sea was seasonally ice-free with hardly any icebergs melting near the site and long-term environmental conditions were less variable. Regime 2 (similar to 49-25 ka b2k) is characterized by pronounced stadial-interstadial variability of foraminifer and IRD fluxes, suggesting an extensive sea-ice cover during most Greenland stadials and seasonally ice-free conditions during most Greenland interstadials. During MIS2 environmental conditions were very similar to those of the younger part of regime 1. While all Heinrich (H) related Greenland stadials are marked by depleted oxygen isotope values at our core site, only H4 and H3 are associated with pronounced IRD peaks. Plain Language Summary North Atlantic sediments contain variable amounts of sand-sized mineral grains and microorganism shells. Mineral grains indicate iceberg transport from continental ice sheets, like the Greenland ice sheet (more icebergs/melting sea-ice, more grains). If the sea-ice cover is too thick, no light can penetrate and fewer microorganisms live in the water beneath the ice. Using these indicators, we investigated ocean sediments from south of Greenland covering the time period between ca. 65 and 25 thousand years ago. This time period was characterized by several abrupt changes between cold and warm climates on millennial timescales. We find that the ocean south of Greenland was sea-ice covered for most of the year with occasional time periods of iceberg discharge between 65 to 56 thousand years ago. From 56 to 49 thousand years ago the ice-free season was extended and hardly any icebergs melted near the site. From 49 thousand years ago our study area was covered by sea-ice year-round during cold time intervals whereas warm time intervals were only seasonally sea-ice covered.     Early Holocene Establishment of the Barents Sea Arctic Front

    A main feature of the Barents Sea oceanography is the Arctic front. The Arctic front marks the transition between the dominating water masses of the Barents Sea: Atlantic Water in the south and Arctic Water in the north. Presently, the Barents Sea Arctic front is directed by the topography of the Bear Island Trough and to some degree the location of the sea ice boundary. During the last glacial maximum, the Svalbard-Barents Sea and Scandinavian Ice Sheets covered the Barents Sea. Hence, no water entered the Barents Sea, neither from the south nor from the north. Following the deglaciation of the Barents Sea, the present-day ocean circulation developed. The evolution of how the present location of the Barents Sea Arctic front established during the early Holocene is documented by foraminiferal relative assemblage data from six core sites along the western Barents Sea margin and opening. The relative abundance of Arctic front indicator Turborotalita quinqueloba, in combination with the cold, polar Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and warm, Atlantic Neogloboquadrina incompta, are used to infer the location of the Barents Sea Arctic front relative to the individual core sites. Until ca. 11 ka BP, the Barents Sea Arctic front followed the western margin of the Barents Sea. All sites along the Barents Sea margin where still dominated by Arctic Water between ca. 11 and 10.2 ka BP, however, the Barents Sea Arctic front turned eastwards into the southwestern Barents Sea. From ca. 10.2 to 8.8 ka BP, the Barents Sea Arctic front moved eastward and was located right above most sites as it followed the Barents Sea margin. The northwestern Barents Sea Arctic front was close to the present location from ca. 8.8 to 7.4 ka BP, however, it was still confined to the southwestern Barents Sea. From ca. 7.4 ka BP, the Barents Sea Arctic front has been located close to the present position, along the margin southwards from Svalbard, turning eastwards along and beyond the northern Bear Island Trough margin

    Independent tephrochronological evidence for rapid and synchronous oceanic and atmospheric temperature rises over the Greenland stadial-interstadial transitions between ca. 32 and 40 ka b2k

    Understanding the dynamics that drove past abrupt climate changes, such as the Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events, depends on combined proxy evidence from disparate archives. To identify leads, lags and synchronicity between different climate system components, independent and robust chronologies are required. Cryptotephrochronology is a key geochronological tool as cryptotephra horizons can act as isochrons linking disparate and/or distant records. Here, we investigated marine sediment core MD99-2284 from the Norwegian Sea to look for previously identified Greenland ice core cryptotephra horizons and define time-parallel markers between the archives. We explored potential secondary transport and depositional mechanisms that could hamper the isochronous integrity of such horizons. We identified six cryptotephra layers of which four correlate to previously known Greenland ice core horizons. None of those were identified in other marine cores and thus, this study contributes greatly to the North Atlantic tephra framework tripling the original amount of existing isochrons between ca. 25 and 60 ka b2k. The latter allow a synchronization between MD99-2284 and the Greenland ice cores between ca. 32 e40 ka b2k, which is, in the North Atlantic, the shortest time-interval during the Last Glacial Period to be constrained by four independent tephra isochrons. These findings provide essential tephra-based evidence for synchronous and rapid oceanic and atmospheric temperature rises during the Greenland Stadial-Interstadial transitions. Furthermore, it enables us to estimate the average peak-duration of interstadial temperature overshoots at approximately 136 years.     Methane-Dependent Extracellular Electron Transfer at the Bioanode by the Anaerobic Archaeal Methanotroph “Candidatus Methanoperedens”

    Anaerobic methanotrophic (ANME) archaea have recently been reported to be capable of using insoluble extracellular electron acceptors via extracellular electron transfer (EET). In this study, we investigated EET by a microbial community dominated by “Candidatus Methanoperedens” archaea at the anode of a bioelectrochemical system (BES) poised at 0 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode (SHE), in this way measuring current as a direct proxy of EET by this community. After inoculation of the BES, the maximum current density was 274 mA m(–2) (stable current up to 39 mA m(–2)). Concomitant conversion of (13)CH(4) into (13)CO(2) demonstrated that current production was methane-dependent, with 38% of the current attributed directly to methane supply. Based on the current production and methane uptake in a closed system, the Coulombic efficiency was about 17%. Polarization curves demonstrated that the current was limited by microbial activity at potentials above 0 V. The metatranscriptome of the inoculum was mined for the expression of c-type cytochromes potentially used for EET, which led to the identification of several multiheme c-type cytochrome-encoding genes among the most abundant transcripts in “Ca. Methanoperedens.” Our study provides strong indications of EET in ANME archaea and describes a system in which ANME-mediated EET can be investigated under laboratory conditions, which provides new research opportunities for mechanistic studies and possibly the generation of axenic ANME cultures

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas penerapan model pembelajaran atraktif berbasis multiple intelligences dalam meremediasi miskonsepsi siswa tentang pemantulan cahaya pada cermin. Pada penelitian ini digunakan bentuk pre-eksperimental design dengan rancangan one group pretest-post test design. Alat pengumpulan data berupa tes pilihan ganda dengan reasoning. Hasil validitas sebesar 4,08 dan reliabilitas 0,537. Siswa dibagi menjadi lima kelompok kecerdasan, yaitu kelompok linguistic intelligence, mathematical-logical intelligence, visual-spatial intelligence, bodily-khinestetic intelligence, dan musical intelligence. Siswa membahas konsep fisika sesuai kelompok kecerdasannya dalam bentuk pembuatan pantun-puisi, teka-teki silang, menggambar kreatif, drama, dan mengarang lirik lagu. Efektivitas penerapan model pembelajaran multiple intelligences menggunakan persamaan effect size. Ditemukan bahwa skor effect size masing-masing kelompok berkategori tinggi sebesar 5,76; 3,76; 4,60; 1,70; dan 1,34. Penerapan model pembelajaran atraktif berbasis multiple intelligences efektif dalam meremediasi miskonsepsi siswa. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat digunakan pada materi fisika dan sekolah lainnya

    Non-Fermi liquid transport in the vicinity of nematic quantum critical point of FeSe1x_{1-x}Sx_x superconductor

    Non-Fermi liquids are strange metals whose physical properties deviate qualitatively from those of conventional metals due to strong quantum fluctuations. In this paper, we report transport measurements on the FeSe1x_{1-x}Sx_x superconductor, which has a quantum critical point of a nematic order without accompanying antiferromagnetism. We find that in addition to a linear-in-temperature resistivity ρxxT\rho_{xx}\propto T, which is close to the Planckian limit, the Hall angle varies as cotθHT2\cot \theta_{\rm H} \propto T^2 and the low-field magnetoresistance is well scaled as Δρxx/ρxxtan2θH\Delta\rho_{xx}/\rho_{xx}\propto \tan^2 \theta_{\rm H} in the vicinity of the nematic quantum critical point. This set of anomalous charge transport properties shows striking resemblance with those reported in cuprate, iron-pnictide and heavy fermion superconductors, demonstrating that the critical fluctuations of a nematic order with q0{\bf q} \approx 0 can also lead to a breakdown of the Fermi liquid description.Comment: 8 pages, 4 + 1 figure
