    Phase entrainment and perceptual cycles in audition and vision

    Des travaux récents indiquent qu'il existe des différences fondamentales entre les systèmes visuel et auditif: tandis que le premier semble échantillonner le flux d'information en provenance de l'environnement, en passant d'un "instantané" à un autre (créant ainsi des cycles perceptifs), la plupart des expériences destinées à examiner ce phénomène de discrétisation dans le système auditif ont mené à des résultats mitigés. Dans cette thèse, au travers de deux expériences de psychophysique, nous montrons que le sous-échantillonnage de l'information à l'entrée des systèmes perceptifs est en effet plus destructif pour l'audition que pour la vision. Cependant, nous révélons que des cycles perceptifs dans le système auditif pourraient exister à un niveau élevé du traitement de l'information. En outre, nos résultats suggèrent que du fait des fluctuations rapides du flot des sons en provenance de l'environnement, le système auditif tend à avoir son activité alignée sur la structure rythmique de ce flux. En synchronisant la phase des oscillations neuronales, elles-mêmes correspondant à différents états d'excitabilité, le système auditif pourrait optimiser activement le moment d'arrivée de ses "instantanés" et ainsi favoriser le traitement des informations pertinentes par rapport aux événements de moindre importance. Non seulement nos résultats montrent que cet entrainement de la phase des oscillations neuronales a des conséquences importantes sur la façon dont sont perçus deux flux auditifs présentés simultanément ; mais de plus, ils démontrent que l'entraînement de phase par un flux langagier inclut des mécanismes de haut niveau. Dans ce but, nous avons créé des stimuli parole/bruit dans lesquels les fluctuations de l'amplitude et du contenu spectral de la parole ont été enlevés, tout en conservant l'information phonétique et l'intelligibilité. Leur utilisation nous a permis de démontrer, au travers de plusieurs expériences, que le système auditif se synchronise à ces stimuli. Plus précisément, la perception, estimée par la détection d'un clic intégré dans les stimuli parole/bruit, et les oscillations neuronales, mesurées par Electroencéphalographie chez l'humain et à l'aide d'enregistrements intracrâniens dans le cortex auditif chez le singe, suivent la rythmique "de haut niveau" liée à la parole. En résumé, les résultats présentés ici suggèrent que les oscillations neuronales sont un mécanisme important pour la discrétisation des informations en provenance de l'environnement en vue de leur traitement par le cerveau, non seulement dans la vision, mais aussi dans l'audition. Pourtant, il semble exister des différences fondamentales entre les deux systèmes: contrairement au système visuel, il est essentiel pour le système auditif de se synchroniser (par entraînement de phase) à son environnement, avec un échantillonnage du flux des informations vraisemblablement réalisé à un niveau hiérarchique élevé.Recent research indicates fundamental differences between the auditory and visual systems: Whereas the visual system seems to sample its environment, cycling between "snapshots" at discrete moments in time (creating perceptual cycles), most attempts at discovering discrete perception in the auditory system failed. Here, we show in two psychophysical experiments that subsampling the very input to the visual and auditory systems is indeed more disruptive for audition; however, the existence of perceptual cycles in the auditory system is possible if they operate on a relatively high level of auditory processing. Moreover, we suggest that the auditory system, due to the rapidly fluctuating nature of its input, might rely to a particularly strong degree on phase entrainment, the alignment between neural activity and the rhythmic structure of its input: By using the low and high excitability phases of neural oscillations, the auditory system might actively control the timing of its "snapshots" and thereby amplify relevant information whereas irrelevant events are suppressed. Not only do our results suggest that the oscillatory phase has important consequences on how simultaneous auditory inputs are perceived; additionally, we can show that phase entrainment to speech sound does entail an active high-level mechanism. We do so by using specifically constructed speech/noise sounds in which fluctuations in low-level features (amplitude and spectral content) of speech have been removed, but intelligibility and high-level features (including, but not restricted to phonetic information) have been conserved. We demonstrate, in several experiments, that the auditory system can entrain to these stimuli, as both perception (the detection of a click embedded in the speech/noise stimuli) and neural oscillations (measured with electroencephalography, EEG, and in intracranial recordings in primary auditory cortex of the monkey) follow the conserved "high-level" rhythm of speech. Taken together, the results presented here suggest that, not only in vision, but also in audition, neural oscillations are an important tool for the discretization and processing of the brain's input. However, there seem to be fundamental differences between the two systems: In contrast to the visual system, it is critical for the auditory system to adapt (via phase entrainment) to its environment, and input subsampling is done most likely on a hierarchically high level of stimulus processing

    Transcranial electric stimulation for the investigation of speech perception and comprehension.

    Transcranial electric stimulation (tES), comprising transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), involves applying weak electrical current to the scalp, which can be used to modulate membrane potentials and thereby modify neural activity. Critically, behavioural or perceptual consequences of this modulation provide evidence for a causal role of neural activity in the stimulated brain region for the observed outcome. We present tES as a tool for the investigation of which neural responses are necessary for successful speech perception and comprehension. We summarise existing studies, along with challenges that need to be overcome, potential solutions, and future directions. We conclude that, although standardised stimulation parameters still need to be established, tES is a promising tool for revealing the neural basis of speech processing. Future research can use this method to explore the causal role of brain regions and neural processes for the perception and comprehension of speech

    How to test for phasic modulation of neural and behavioural responses.

    Research on whether perception or other processes depend on the phase of neural oscillations is rapidly gaining popularity. However, it is unknown which methods are optimally suited to evaluate the hypothesized phase effect. Using a simulation approach, we here test the ability of different methods to detect such an effect on dichotomous (e.g., "hit" vs "miss") and continuous (e.g., scalp potentials) response variables. We manipulated parameters that characterise the phase effect or define the experimental approach to test for this effect. For each parameter combination and response variable, we identified an optimal method. We found that methods regressing single-trial responses on circular (sine and cosine) predictors perform best for all of the simulated parameters, regardless of the nature of the response variable (dichotomous or continuous). In sum, our study lays a foundation for optimized experimental designs and analyses in future studies investigating the role of phase for neural and behavioural responses.     Sustained neural rhythms reveal endogenous oscillations supporting speech perception.

    Rhythmic sensory or electrical stimulation will produce rhythmic brain responses. These rhythmic responses are often interpreted as endogenous neural oscillations aligned (or "entrained") to the stimulus rhythm. However, stimulus-aligned brain responses can also be explained as a sequence of evoked responses, which only appear regular due to the rhythmicity of the stimulus, without necessarily involving underlying neural oscillations. To distinguish evoked responses from true oscillatory activity, we tested whether rhythmic stimulation produces oscillatory responses which continue after the end of the stimulus. Such sustained effects provide evidence for true involvement of neural oscillations. In Experiment 1, we found that rhythmic intelligible, but not unintelligible speech produces oscillatory responses in magnetoencephalography (MEG) which outlast the stimulus at parietal sensors. In Experiment 2, we found that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) leads to rhythmic fluctuations in speech perception outcomes after the end of electrical stimulation. We further report that the phase relation between electroencephalography (EEG) responses and rhythmic intelligible speech can predict the tACS phase that leads to most accurate speech perception. Together, we provide fundamental results for several lines of research-including neural entrainment and tACS-and reveal endogenous neural oscillations as a key underlying principle for speech perception

In the rodent hippocampus, the representation of sequentially organized spatial locations is reflected by the phase of action potentials relative to the theta oscillation (phase precession). We investigated whether the timing of neuronal activity relative to the theta brain oscillation also reflects sequence order in the medial temporal lobe of humans. We used a task in which human participants learned a fixed sequence of pictures and recorded single neuron and local field potential activity with implanted electrodes. We report that spikes for three consecutive items in the sequence (the preferred stimulus for each cell, as well as the stimuli immediately preceding and following it) were phase-locked at distinct phases of the theta oscillation. Consistent with phase precession, spikes were fired at progressively earlier phases as the sequence advanced. These findings generalize previous findings in the rodent hippocampus to the human temporal lobe and suggest that encoding stimulus information at distinct oscillatory phases may play a role in maintaining sequential order in memory.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Diseño y Evaluación de un programa informático para la educación musical de maestros no especialistas. El caso de EMOLAB.

    Este trabajo expone el diseño, desarrollo y evaluación de un software como apoyo docente en una materia de formación musical básica para futuros maestros generalistas. La evaluación del programa fue realizada por estudiantes de primer año del Grado de Maestro en Educación Primaria. Cumplimentaron un cuestionario que recogió sus opiniones (versatilidad, eficacia, facilidad de uso, calidad del entorno gráfico, adecuación, interés, facilitación del aprendizaje, feedback, funcionalidad) y percepciones sobre aspectos más generales (control, orientación, afectividad, consulta, verificación, seguimiento). Los resultados sugieren que el alumnado percibe EMOLab como herramienta de gran ayuda en el desarrollo de sus habilidades musicales

    A checklist for assessing the methodological quality of concurrent tES-fMRI studies (ContES checklist): a consensus study and statement

    Background: Low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), including alternating or direct current stimulation (tACS or tDCS), applies weak electrical stimulation to modulate the activity of brain circuits. Integration of tES with concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows for the mapping of neural activity during neuromodulation, supporting causal studies of both brain function and tES effects. Methodological aspects of tES-fMRI studies underpin the results, and reporting them in appropriate detail is required for reproducibility and interpretability. Despite the growing number of published reports, there are no consensus-based checklists for disclosing methodological details of concurrent tES-fMRI studies. Objective: To develop a consensus-based checklist of reporting standards for concurrent tES-fMRI studies to support methodological rigor, transparency, and reproducibility (ContES Checklist). Methods: A two-phase Delphi consensus process was conducted by a steering committee (SC) of 13 members and 49 expert panelists (EP) through the International Network of the tES-fMRI (INTF) Consortium. The process began with a circulation of a preliminary checklist of essential items and additional recommendations, developed by the SC based on a systematic review of 57 concurrent tES-fMRI studies. Contributors were then invited to suggest revisions or additions to the initial checklist. After the revision phase, contributors rated the importance of the 17 essential items and 42 additional recommendations in the final checklist. The state of methodological transparency within the 57 reviewed concurrent tES-fMRI studies was then assessed using the checklist. Results: Experts refined the checklist through the revision and rating phases, leading to a checklist with three categories of essential items and additional recommendations: (1) technological factors, (2) safety and noise tests, and (3) methodological factors. The level of reporting of checklist items varied among the 57 concurrent tES-fMRI papers, ranging from 24% to 76%. On average, 53% of checklist items were reported in a given article. Conclusions: Use of the ContES checklist is expected to enhance the methodological reporting quality of future concurrent tES-fMRI studies, and increase methodological transparency and reproducibility

    Visual speech cues recruit neural oscillations to optimise auditory perception: Ways forward for research on human communication

    International audienceIn pandemic times, when visual speech cues are masked, it becomes particularly evident how much we rely on them to communicate. Recent research points to a key role of neural oscillations for cross-modal predictions during speech perception. This article bridges several fields of researchneural oscillations, cross-modal speech perception and brain stimulationto propose ways forward for research on human communication. Future research can test: (1) whether "speech is special" for oscillatory processes underlying cross-modal predictions; (2) whether "visual control" of oscillatory processes in the auditory system is strongest in moments of reduced acoustic regularity; and (3) whether providing information to the brain via electric stimulation can overcome deficits associated with cross-modal information processing in certain pathological conditions
