On the abundance of Lithium in T Coronae Borealis
We have obtained high resolution echelle spectroscopy of the recurrent nova T
CrB. We find that the surface lithium abundance in T CrB is signifcantly
enhanced compared to field M giants, where it is not detectable. We offer
possible explanations for this in terms of either a delay in the onset of
convection in the giant star, enhanced coronal activity due to star-spots or

Tohoku-Hiroshima-Nagoya planetary spectra library: A method for characterizing planets in the visible to near infrared
There has not been a comprehensive framework for comparing spectral data from
different planets.Such a framework is needed for the study of extrasolar
planets and objects within the solar system. We have undertaken observations to
compile a library of planet spectra for all planets, some moons, and some dwarf
planets in the solar system to study their general spectroscopic and
photometric natures. During May and November of 2008, we acquired spectra for
the planets using TRISPEC, which is capable of simultaneous three-band
spectroscopy in a wide wavelength range of 0.45 - 2.5 microns with low
resolving power (lambda-over-Delta-lambda is 140 - 360). Patterns emerge from
comparing the spectra. Analyzing their general spectroscopic and photometric
natures, we show that it is possible to distinguish between gas planets, soil
planets and ice planets. These methods can be applied to extrasolar
observations using low resolution spectrography or broad-band filters. The
present planet spectral library is the first library to contain observational
spectra for all of the solar system planets, based on simultaneous observations
in visible and near infrared wavelengths. This library will be a useful
reference for analyzing extrasolar planet spectra, and for calibrating

Detailed analysis of Balmer lines in cool dwarf stars
An analysis of H alpha and H beta spectra in a sample of 30 cool dwarf and
subgiant stars is presented using MARCS model atmospheres based on the most
recent calculations of the line opacities. A detailed quantitative comparison
of the solar flux spectra with model spectra shows that Balmer line profile
shapes, and therefore the temperature structure in the line formation region,
are best represented under the mixing length theory by any combination of a low
mixing-length parameter alpha and a low convective structure parameter y. A
slightly lower effective temperature is obtained for the sun than the accepted
value, which we attribute to errors in models and line opacities. The programme
stars span temperatures from 4800 to 7100 K and include a small number of
population II stars. Effective temperatures have been derived using a
quantitative fitting method with a detailed error analysis. Our temperatures
find good agreement with those from the Infrared Flux Method (IRFM) near solar
metallicity but show differences at low metallicity where the two available
IRFM determinations themselves are in disagreement. Comparison with recent
temperature determinations using Balmer lines by Fuhrmann (1998, 2000), who
employed a different description of the wing absorption due to self-broadening,
does not show the large differences predicted by Barklem et al. (2000). In
fact, perhaps fortuitously, reasonable agreement is found near solar
metallicity, while we find significantly cooler temperatures for low
metallicity stars of around solar temperature.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, to appear in A&
Post conjunction detection of Pictoris b with VLT/SPHERE
With an orbital distance comparable to that of Saturn in the solar system,
\bpic b is the closest (semi-major axis \,9\,au) exoplanet that has
been imaged to orbit a star. Thus it offers unique opportunities for detailed
studies of its orbital, physical, and atmospheric properties, and of
disk-planet interactions. With the exception of the discovery observations in
2003 with NaCo at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), all following astrometric
measurements relative to \bpic have been obtained in the southwestern part of
the orbit, which severely limits the determination of the planet's orbital
parameters. We aimed at further constraining \bpic b orbital properties using
more data, and, in particular, data taken in the northeastern part of the
orbit.
We used SPHERE at the VLT to precisely monitor the orbital motion of beta
\bpic b since first light of the instrument in 2014. We were able to monitor
the planet until November 2016, when its angular separation became too small
(125 mas, i.e., 1.6\,au) and prevented further detection. We redetected \bpic b
on the northeast side of the disk at a separation of 139\,mas and a PA of
30 in September 2018. The planetary orbit is now well constrained.
With a semi-major axis (sma) of au (1 ), it
definitely excludes previously reported possible long orbital periods, and
excludes \bpic b as the origin of photometric variations that took place in
1981. We also refine the eccentricity and inclination of the planet. From an
instrumental point of view, these data demonstrate that it is possible to
detect, if they exist, young massive Jupiters that orbit at less than 2 au from
a star that is 20 pc away.Comment: accepted by A&
SPHERE: the exoplanet imager for the Very Large Telescope
Observations of circumstellar environments to look for the direct signal of
exoplanets and the scattered light from disks has significant instrumental
implications. In the past 15 years, major developments in adaptive optics,
coronagraphy, optical manufacturing, wavefront sensing and data processing,
together with a consistent global system analysis have enabled a new generation
of high-contrast imagers and spectrographs on large ground-based telescopes
with much better performance. One of the most productive is the
Spectro-Polarimetic High contrast imager for Exoplanets REsearch (SPHERE)
designed and built for the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. SPHERE
includes an extreme adaptive optics system, a highly stable common path
interface, several types of coronagraphs and three science instruments. Two of
them, the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) and the Infra-Red Dual-band Imager
and Spectrograph (IRDIS), are designed to efficiently cover the near-infrared
(NIR) range in a single observation for efficient young planet search. The
third one, ZIMPOL, is designed for visible (VIR) polarimetric observation to
look for the reflected light of exoplanets and the light scattered by debris
disks. This suite of three science instruments enables to study circumstellar
environments at unprecedented angular resolution both in the visible and the
near-infrared. In this work, we present the complete instrument and its on-sky

The interplay between statins, caveolin-1, and aldosterone
Statin use is associated with lower aldosterone levels. We hypothesized that caveolin-1 may be important for the uptake of statins into the adrenal gland and would affect statin’s aldosterone-lowering effects. The aim of this study was to test whether the caveolin-1 risk allele (rs926198) would affect aldosterone levels associated with statin use. The Hypertensive Pathotype database includes healthy and hypertensive individuals who have undergone assessment of adrenal hormones. Individuals were studied off antihypertensive medications but were maintained on statins if prescribed by their personal physician. Adrenal hormones were measured at baseline and after 1 hour of angiotensin II stimulation on both high- and low-sodium diets. A mixed-model repeated-measures analysis was employed with a priori selected covariates of age, sex, body mass index, and protocol (low versus high sodium, baseline versus angiotensin II stimulated aldosterone). A total of 250 individuals were included in the study; 31 individuals were taking statins (12.4%) and 219 were not. Among statin users, carrying a caveolin-1 risk allele resulted in a 25% (95% CI, 1–43.2) lower aldosterone level (P=0.04). However, among nonstatin users, carrying a caveolin-1 risk allele resulted in no significant effect on aldosterone levels (P=0.38). Additionally, the interaction between caveolin-1 risk allele and statin use on aldosterone levels was significant (P=0.03). These findings suggest caveolin-1 risk allele carrying individuals are likely to receive the most benefit from statin’s aldosterone-lowering properties; however, due to the observational nature of this study, these findings need further investigation
Search for Doubly-Charged Higgs Boson Production at HERA
A search for the single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons H^{\pm \pm}
in ep collisions is presented. The signal is searched for via the Higgs decays
into a high mass pair of same charge leptons, one of them being an electron.
The analysis uses up to 118 pb^{-1} of ep data collected by the H1 experiment
at HERA. No evidence for doubly-charged Higgs production is observed and mass
dependent upper limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings h_{el} of the Higgs
boson to an electron-lepton pair. Assuming that the doubly-charged Higgs only
decays into an electron and a muon via a coupling of electromagnetic strength
h_{e \mu} = \sqrt{4 \pi \alpha_{em}} = 0.3, a lower limit of 141 GeV on the
H^{\pm\pm} mass is obtained at the 95% confidence level. For a doubly-charged
Higgs decaying only into an electron and a tau and a coupling h_{e\tau} = 0.3,
masses below 112 GeV are ruled out.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
GAUDI: a preparatory archive for the COROT mission
The GAUDI database (Ground-based Asteroseismology Uniform Database Interface,
http://sdc.laeff.esa.es/gaudi/) is a preparatory archive for the COROT
(COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits,
http://www.astrsp-mrs.fr/projets/corot/) mission developed at LAEFF (Laboratory
for Space Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics, http://www.laeff.esa.es). Its
intention is to make the ground-based observations obtained in the preparation
of the asteroseismology programme available in a simple and efficient way. It
contains spectroscopic and photometric data together with inferred physical
parameters for more than 1500 objects gathered since January 1998 in 6 years of
observational campaigns. In this paper, the main functionalities and
characteristics of the system are described. The observations have been
collected at ESO-La Silla, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, Observatoire de
Haute-Provence, South African Astronomical Observatory, Tautenberg Observatory

Neonatal Overfeeding Induced by Small Litter Rearing Causes Altered Glucocorticoid Metabolism in Rats
Elevated glucocorticoid (GC) activity may be involved in the development of the metabolic syndrome. Tissue GC exposure is determined by the tissue-specific GC-activating enzyme 11β-hydroxysteriod dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) and the GC-inactivating enzyme 5α-reductase type 1 (5αR1), as well as 5β-reductase (5βR). Our aim was to study the effects of neonatal overfeeding induced by small litter rearing on the expression of GC-regulating enzymes in adipose tissue and/or liver and on obesity-related metabolic disturbances during development. Male Sprague-Dawley rat pup litters were adjusted to litter sizes of three (small litters, SL) or ten (normal litters, NL) on postnatal day 3 and then given standard chow from postnatal week 3 onward (W3). Small litter rearing induced obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and higher circulating corticosterone in adults. 11β-HSD1 expression and enzyme activity in retroperitoneal, but not in epididymal, adipose tissue increased with postnatal time and peaked at W5/W6 in both groups before declining. From W8, 11β-HSD1 expression and enzyme activity levels in retroperitoneal fat persisted at significantly higher levels in SL compared to NL rats. Hepatic 11β-HSD1 enzyme activity in SL rats was elevated from W3 to W16 compared to NL rats. Hepatic 5αR1 and 5βR expression was higher in SL compared to NL rats after weaning until W6, whereupon expression decreased in the SL rats and remained similar to that in NL rats. In conclusion, small litter rearing in rats induced peripheral tissue-specific alterations in 11β-HSD1 expression and activity and 5αR1 and 5βR expression during puberty, which could contribute to elevated tissue-specific GC exposure and aggravate the development of metabolic dysregulation in adults
