Deterministic delivery of externally cold and precisely positioned single molecular ions
We present the preparation and deterministic delivery of a selectable number
of externally cold molecular ions. A laser cooled ensemble of Mg^+ ions
subsequently confined in several linear Paul traps inter-connected via a
quadrupole guide serves as a cold bath for a single or up to a few hundred
molecular ions. Sympathetic cooling embeds the molecular ions in the
crystalline structure. MgH^+ ions, that serve as a model system for a large
variety of other possible molecular ions, are cooled down close to the Doppler
limit and are positioned with an accuracy of one micrometer. After the
production process, severely compromising the vacuum conditions, the molecular
ion is efficiently transfered into nearly background-free environment. The
transfer of a molecular ion between different traps as well as the control of
the molecular ions in the traps is demonstrated. Schemes, optimized for the
transfer of a specific number of ions, are realized and their efficiencies are
evaluated. This versatile source applicable for broad charge-to-mass ratios of
externally cold and precisely positioned molecular ions can serve as a
container-free target preparation device well suited for diffraction or
spectroscopic measurements on individual molecular ions at high repetition

Diagnostic and prognostic significance of systemic alkyl quinolones for P. aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis: a longitudinal study
Background
Pulmonary P. aeruginosa infection is associated with poor outcomes in cystic fibrosis (CF) and early diagnosis is challenging, particularly in those who are unable to expectorate sputum. Specific P. aeruginosa 2-alkyl-4-quinolones are detectable in the sputum, plasma and urine of adults with CF, suggesting that they have potential as biomarkers for P. aeruginosa infection.
Aim
To investigate systemic 2-alkyl-4-quinolones as potential biomarkers for pulmonary P. aeruginosa infection.
Methods
A multicentre observational study of 176 adults and 68 children with CF. Cross-sectionally, comparisons were made between current P. aeruginosa infection using six 2-alkyl-4-quinolones detected in sputum, plasma and urine against hospital microbiological culture results. All participants without P. aeruginosa infection at baseline were followed up for one year to determine if 2-alkyl-4-quinolones were early biomarkers of pulmonary P. aeruginosa infection.
Results
Cross-sectional analysis: the most promising biomarker with the greatest diagnostic accuracy was 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline (HHQ). In adults, areas under the ROC curves (95% confidence intervals) for HHQ analyses were 0.82 (0.75–0.89) in sputum, 0.76 (0.69–0.82) in plasma and 0.82 (0.77–0.88) in urine. In children, the corresponding values for HHQ analyses were 0.88 (0.77–0.99) in plasma and 0.83 (0.68–0.97) in urine.
Longitudinal analysis: Ten adults and six children had a new positive respiratory culture for P. aeruginosa in follow-up. A positive plasma HHQ test at baseline was significantly associated with a new positive culture for P. aeruginosa in both adults and children in follow-up (odds ratio (OR) = 6.67;-95% CI:-1.48–30.1;-p = 0.01 and OR = 70; 95% CI: 5–956;-p < 0.001 respectively).
Conclusions
AQs measured in sputum, plasma and urine may be used to diagnose current infection with P. aeruginosa in adults and children with CF. These preliminary data show that plasma HHQ may have potential as an early biomarker of pulmonary P. aeruginosa. Further studies are necessary to evaluate if HHQ could be used in clinical practice to aid early diagnosis of P. aeruginosa infection in the future
The effect of two-temperature post-shock accretion flow on the linear polarization pulse in magnetic cataclysmic variables
The temperatures of electrons and ions in the post-shock accretion region of
a magnetic cataclysmic variable (mCV) will be equal at sufficiently high mass
flow rates or for sufficiently weak magnetic fields. At lower mass flow rates
or in stronger magnetic fields, efficient cyclotron cooling will cool the
electrons faster than the electrons can cool the ions and a two-temperature
flow will result. Here we investigate the differences in polarized radiation
expected from mCV post-shock accretion columns modeled with one- and
two-temperature hydrodynamics. In an mCV model with one accretion region, a
magnetic field >~30 MG and a specific mass flow rate of ~0.5 g/cm/cm/s, along
with a relatively generic geometric orientation of the system, we find that in
the ultraviolet either a single linear polarization pulse per binary orbit or
two pulses per binary orbit can be expected, depending on the accretion column
hydrodynamic structure (one- or two-temperature) modeled. Under conditions
where the physical flow is two-temperature, one pulse per orbit is predicted
from a single accretion region where a one-temperature model predicts two
pulses. The intensity light curves show similar pulse behavior but there is
very little difference between the circular polarization predictions of one-
and two-temperature models. Such discrepancies indicate that it is important to
model some aspect of two-temperature flow in indirect imaging procedures, like
Stokes imaging, especially at the edges of extended accretion regions, were the

Hamiltonian Description of Composite Fermions: Magnetoexciton Dispersions
A microscopic Hamiltonian theory of the FQHE, developed by Shankar and myself
based on the fermionic Chern-Simons approach, has recently been quite
successful in calculating gaps in Fractional Quantum Hall states, and in
predicting approximate scaling relations between the gaps of different
fractions. I now apply this formalism towards computing magnetoexciton
dispersions (including spin-flip dispersions) in the , 2/5, and 3/7
gapped fractions, and find approximate agreement with numerical results. I also
analyse the evolution of these dispersions with increasing sample thickness,
modelled by a potential soft at high momenta. New results are obtained for
instabilities as a function of thickness for 2/5 and 3/7, and it is shown that
the spin-polarized 2/5 state, in contrast to the spin-polarized 1/3 state,
cannot be described as a simple quantum ferromagnet.Comment: 18 pages, 18 encapsulated ps figure
Steroid sulfatase sulfatase deficiency and androgen activation before and after puberty
CONTEXT: Steroid sulfatase (STS) cleaves the sulfate moiety off steroid sulfates, including dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) sulfate (DHEAS), the inactive sulfate ester of the adrenal androgen precursor DHEA. Deficient DHEA sulfation, the opposite enzymatic reaction to that catalyzed by STS, results in androgen excess by increased conversion of DHEA to active androgens. STS deficiency (STSD) due to deletions or inactivating mutations in the X-linked STS gene manifests with ichthyosis, but androgen synthesis and metabolism in STSD have not been studied in detail yet. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study in 30 males with STSD (age 6–27 y; 13 prepubertal, 5 peripubertal, and 12 postpubertal) and 38 age-, sex-, and Tanner stage-matched healthy controls. Serum and 24-hour urine steroid metabolome analysis was performed by mass spectrometry and genetic analysis of the STS gene by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: Genetic analysis showed STS mutations in all patients, comprising 27 complete gene deletions, 1 intragenic deletion and 2 missense mutations. STSD patients had apparently normal pubertal development. Serum and 24-hour urinary DHEAS were increased in STSD, whereas serum DHEA and testosterone were decreased. However, total 24-hour urinary androgen excretion was similar to controls, with evidence of increased 5α-reductase activity in STSD. Prepubertal healthy controls showed a marked increase in the serum DHEA to DHEAS ratio that was absent in postpubertal controls and in STSD patients of any pubertal stage. CONCLUSIONS: In STSD patients, an increased 5α-reductase activity appears to compensate for a reduced rate of androgen generation by enhancing peripheral androgen activation in affected patients. In healthy controls, we discovered a prepubertal surge in the serum DHEA to DHEAS ratio that was absent in STSD, indicative of physiologically up-regulated STS activity before puberty. This may represent a fine tuning mechanism for tissue-specific androgen activation preparing for the major changes in androgen production during puberty
Measurement of the Atmospheric Muon Spectrum from 20 to 3000 GeV
The absolute muon flux between 20 GeV and 3000 GeV is measured with the L3
magnetic muon spectrometer for zenith angles ranging from 0 degree to 58
degree. Due to the large exposure of about 150 m2 sr d, and the excellent
momentum resolution of the L3 muon chambers, a precision of 2.3 % at 150 GeV in
the vertical direction is achieved.
The ratio of positive to negative muons is studied between 20 GeV and 500
GeV, and the average vertical muon charge ratio is found to be 1.285 +- 0.003
