    Complete Renormalization Group Improvement-Avoiding Factorization and Renormalization Scale Dependence in QCD Predictions

    For moments of leptoproduction structure functions we show that all dependence on the renormalization and factorization scales disappears, provided that all the ultraviolet logarithms involving the physical energy scale Q are completely resummed. The approach is closely related to Grunberg's method of Effective Charges.     No effect of 'watching eyes' : an attempted replication and extension investigating individual differences

    Some evidence suggests that people behave more cooperatively and generously when observed or in the presence of images of eyes (termed the ‘watching eyes’ effect). Eye images are thought to trigger feelings of observation, which in turn motivate people to behave more cooperatively to earn a good reputation. However, several recent studies have failed to find evidence of the eyes effect. One possibility is that inconsistent evidence in support of the eyes effect is a product of individual differences in sensitivity or susceptibility to the cue. In fact, some evidence suggests that people who are generally more prosocial are less susceptible to situation-specific reputation-based cues of observation. In this paper, we sought to (1) replicate the eyes effect, (2) replicate the past finding that people who are dispositionally less prosocial are more responsive to observation than people who are more dispositionally more prosocial, and (3) determine if this effect extends to the watching eyes effect. Results from a pre-registered study showed that people did not give more money in a dictator game when decisions were made public or in the presence of eye images, even though participants felt more observed when decisions were public. That is, we failed to replicate the eyes effect and observation effect. An initial, but underpowered, interaction model suggests that egoists give less than prosocials in private, but not public, conditions. This suggests a direction for future research investigating if and how individual differences in prosociality influence observation effects

    Direct Extraction of QCD Lambda MS-bar from e+e- Jet Observables

    We directly fit the QCD dimensional transmutation parameter, Lambda MS-bar, to experimental data on e+e- jet observables, making use of next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative calculations. In this procedure there is no need to mention, let alone to arbitrarily vary, the unphysical renormalisation scale mu, and one avoids the spurious and meaningless ``theoretical error'' associated with standard alpha_s determinations. PETRA, SLD, and LEP data are considered in the analysis. An attempt is made to estimate the importance of uncalculated next-NLO and higher order perturbative corrections, and power corrections, by studying the scatter in the values of Lambda MS-bar obtained for different observables.Comment: 46 pages, 22 figure

    RS-invariant all-orders renormalon resummations for some QCD observables

    We propose a renormalon-inspired resummation of QCD perturbation theory based on approximating the renormalization scheme (RS) invariant effective charge beta-function coefficients by the portion containing the highest power of bb=16(11N\frac{1}{6}(11N--2Nf)2N_{f}), for SU(NN) QCD with NfN_{f} quark flavours. This can be accomplished using exact large-NfN_{f} all-orders results. The resulting resummation is RS-invariant and the exact next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-NLO (NNLO) coefficients in any RS are included. This improves on a previously employed naive resummation of the leading-bb piece of the perturbative coefficients which is RS-dependent, making its comparison with fixed-order perturbative results ambiguous. The RS-invariant resummation is used to assess the reliability of fixed-order perturbation theory for the e+ee^{+}e^{-} RR-ratio, the analogous τ\tau-lepton decay ratio RτR_{\tau}, and Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) sum rules, by comparing it with the exact NNLO results in the effective charge RS. For the RR-ratio and RτR_{\tau}, where large-order perturbative behaviour is dominated by a leading ultra-violet renormalon singularity, the comparison indicates fixed-order perturbation theory to be very reliable. For DIS sum rules, which have a leading infra-red renormalon singularity, the performance is rather poor. In this way we estimate that at LEP/SLD energies ideal data on the RR-ratio could determine αs(MZ)\alpha_{s}(M_{Z}) to three-significant figures, and for the RτR_{\tau} we estimate a theoretical uncertainty δαs(mτ)0.008\delta\alpha_{s}(m_{\tau})\simeq0.008 corresponding to δαs(MZ)0.001\delta\alpha_{s}(M_{Z})\simeq0.001.     Multidisciplinary investigation of two Egyptian child mummies curated at the University of Tartu Art Museum, Estonia (Late/Graeco-Roman Periods)

    Two ancient Egyptian child mummies at the University of Tartu Art Museum (Estonia) were, according to museum records, brought to Estonia by the young Baltic-German scholar Otto Friedrich von Richter, who had travelled in Egypt during the early 19th century. Although some studies of the mummies were conducted, a thorough investigation has never been made. Thus, an interdisciplinary team of experts studied the remains using the most recent analytical methods in order to provide an exhaustive analysis of the remains. The bodies were submitted for osteological and archaeothanatological study, radiological investigation, AMS radiocarbon dating, chemical and textile analyses, 3D modelling, entomological as well as aDNA investigation. Here we synthesize the results of one of the most extensive multidisciplinary analyses of ancient Egyptian child mummies, adding significantly to our knowledge of such examples of ancient funerary practices.© 2020 Oras et al.
