We present stellar and gaseous kinematics of the inner 350 pc radius of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk1066 derived from J and Kl bands data obtained with the Gemini NIFS at a spatial resolution of 35 pc. The stellar velocity field is dominated by rotation in the galaxy plane but shows an S-shape distortion along the galaxy minor axis which seems to be due to an oval structure seen in an optical continuum image. Along this oval, between 170 and 280 pc from the nucleus we find a partial ring of low sigma (~50 km/s) attributed to an intermediate age stellar population. Fro measurements of the emission-line fluxes and profiles ([PII]1.19um, [FeII]1.26um, Pa-beta and H2 2.12um), we have constructed maps for the gas centroid velocity, velocity dispersion, as well as channel maps. The velocity fields for all emission lines are dominated by a similar rotation pattern to that observed for the stars, but are distorted by the presence of two structures: (i) a compact rotating disc with radius r~70 pc; (ii) outflows along the radio jet which is oriented approximately along the galaxy major axis. The compact rotating disc is more conspicuous in the H2 emitting gas, which presents the smallest sigma values and most clear rotation pattern, supporting a location in the galaxy plane. We estimate a gas mass for the disc of ~10^7Msun. The H2 kinematics further suggests that the nuclear disc is being fed by gas coming from the outer regions. The outflow is more conspicuous in the [FeII] emitting gas, which presents the highest sigma values (up to 150 km/s) and the highest blue and redshifts of up to 500 km/s, while the highest stellar rotation velocity is only 130 km/s. We estimate a mass-outflow rate in ionized gas of 0.06 Msun/yr. The derived kinematics for the emitting gas is similar to that observed in previous studies supporting that the H2 is a tracer of the AGN feeding and the [FeII] of its feedback.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 18 pages; 15 figue

Extremely large and hot multilayer Keplerian disk around the O-type protostar W51N: The precursors of the HCHII regions?

We present sensitive high angular resolution (0.57''-0.78'') SO, SO2_2, CO, C2_2H5_5OH, HC3_3N, and HCOCH2_2OH line observations at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths of the young O-type protostar W51 North made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). We report the presence of a large (of about 8000 AU) and hot molecular circumstellar disk around this object, which connects the inner dusty disk with the molecular ring or toroid reported recently, and confirms the existence of a single bipolar outflow emanating from this object. The molecular emission from the large disk is observed in layers with the transitions characterized by high excitation temperatures in their lower energy states (up to 1512 K) being concentrated closer to the central massive protostar. The molecular emission from those transitions with low or moderate excitation temperatures are found in the outermost parts of the disk and exhibits an inner cavity with an angular size of around 0.7''. We modeled all lines with a Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) synthetic spectra. A detail study of the kinematics of the molecular gas together with a LTE model of a circumstellar disk shows that the innermost parts of the disk are also Keplerian plus a contracting velocity. The emission of the HCOCH2_2OH reveals the possible presence of a warm ``companion'' located to the northeast of the disk, however its nature is unclear. The emission of the SO and SO2_2 is observed in the circumstellar disk as well as in the outflow. We suggest that the massive protostar W51 North appears to be in a phase before the presence of a Hypercompact or an Ultracompact HII (HC/UCHII) region, and propose a possible sequence on the formation of the massive stars.Comment: Accepted to Ap

Advanced load-shift system: an experimental validation of the ac-dc converter as shunt active power filter

    Get PDF
This paper presents a load-shift system with advanced functionalities to interface the power grid (PG). When compared with the conventional approach, an advanced load-shift system (aLSS) permits the compensation of power quality (PQ) problems for the grid-side, namely problems related to current harmonics, current imbalance, and power factor. The proposed aLSS is composed by a bidirectional ac-dc converter to interface the PG and by a bidirectional dc-dc converter to interface an energy storage system (ESS). Since the main innovation is related with the PG interface, the focus of this work is on the analysis of the ac-dc converter, which is based on a three-phase four-leg converter. A theoretical study and the details concerning the control algorithm are presented and discussed along the paper. A laboratory prototype of the proposed aLSS was developed and the details of implementation are described in the paper. Experimental results obtained with the developed prototype prove that the aLSS contributes for the technology progress in this area, validating a new concept of operation concerning the PQ on the PG side. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia with-in the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019. Trigonometric Parallax of W51 Main/South

We report measurement of the trigonometric parallax of W51 Main/South using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We measure a value of 0.185 +/- 0.010 mas, corresponding to a distance of 5.41 (+0.31/-0.28) kpc. W51 Main/South is a well-known massive star-forming region near the tangent point of the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way. Our distance to W51 yields an estimate of the distance to the Galactic center of Ro = 8.3 +/- 0.46 (statistical) +/- 1.0 (systematic) kpc by simple geometry. Combining the parallax and proper motion measurements for W51, we obtained the full-space motion of this massive star forming region. We find W51 is in a nearly circular orbit about the Galactic center. The H2O masers used for our parallax measurements trace four powerful bipolar outflows within a 0.4 pc size region, some of which are associated with dusty molecular hot cores and/or hyper- or ultra-compact HII regions.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 32 pages; 6 tables; 5 figure

This study aimed to analyze the theoretical and methodological contributions of the use of films as a strategy in Physical Education classes. In this view, the research was characterized as qualitative with a documentary nature, in which twelve films were analyzed. After the analyses, themes such as racism, gender, education, and religiosity were identified and used to subsidize the current discussions. In this sense, we emphasize the importance of using films as a teaching strategy during Physical Education classes as they bring about cross-cutting themes which are inherent to the reality of students; thus, enabling teachers to problematize them. Massive Star Forming Regions in the Galaxy using the Spitzer GLIMPSE Survey

We examine the thirteen most luminous sources in the WMAP free-free map using the Spitzer GLIMPSE and MSX surveys to identify massive star formation regions, emitting one-third of the Galactic free-free luminosity. We identify star forming regions by a combination of bubble morphology in 8 \micronm (PAH) emission and radio recombination line radial velocities. We find 40 star forming regions associated with our WMAP sources, and determine unique distances to 31. We interpret the bubbles as evidence for radial expansion. The radial velocity distribution for each source allows us to measure the intrinsic speed of a region's expansion. This speed is consistent with the size and age of the bubbles. The high free-free luminosities, combined with negligible synchrotron emission, demonstrate that the bubbles are not driven by supernovae. The kinetic energy of the largest bubbles is a substantial fraction of that measured in the older superbubbles found by Heiles. We find that the energy injected into the ISM by our bubbles is similar to that required to maintain the turbulent motion in the gas disk inside 8 kpc. We report a number of new star forming regions powered by massive (\textrm{M}_{*} > 10^4 \textrm{M}_\sun) star clusters. We measure the scale height of the Galactic O stars to be h_{\textrm{*}} = 35 \pm 5 \pc. We determine an empirical relationship between the PAH and free-free emission of the form FPAHFff2F_{\textrm{PAH}} \propto F^2_{\textrm{ff}}. Finally, we find that the bubble geometry is more consistent with a spherical shell rather than a flattened disk.Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 29 Pages, 17 Figures, 5 Table

We present a case of a 16-year-old male patient with sudden-onset, rash, arthritis and meningitis by Neisseria meningitidis one week after an acute upper respiratory infection. On the 10th day of treatment followed by neurological and arthritis clinical improvement, he presented once again a tender and swollen left knee with a moderate effusion, and active and passive range of motion was severely limited secondary to pain, and when he was submitted to surgical drainage and synovial fluid analysis he showed inflammatory characteristics. A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug was taken for five days with complete improvement of symptoms. The case is notable for its combination of features of septic and immune-mediated arthritis, which has rarely been reported in the same patient.

A ring/disk/outflow system associated with W51 North: a very massive star in the making

Sensitive and high angular resolution (\sim 0.4\arcsec) SO2_2[222,20_{2,20} \to 221,21_{1,21}] and SiO[5\to4] line and 1.3 and 7 mm continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and the Very Large Array (VLA) towards the young massive cluster W51 IRS2 are presented. We report the presence of a large (of about 3000 AU) and massive (40 M_\odot) dusty circumstellar disk and a hot gas molecular ring around a high-mass protostar or a compact small stellar system associated with W51 North. The simultaneous observations of the silicon monoxide molecule, an outflow gas tracer, further revealed a massive (200 M_\odot) and collimated (14\sim14^\circ) outflow nearly perpendicular to the dusty and molecular structures suggesting thus the presence of a single very massive protostar with a bolometric luminosity of more than 105^5 L_\odot. A molecular hybrid LTE model of a Keplerian and infalling ring with an inner cavity and a central stellar mass of more than 60 M_\odot agrees well with the SO2_2[222,20_{2,20} \to 221,21_{1,21}] line observations. Finally, these results suggest that mechanisms, such as mergers of low- and intermediate- mass stars, might be not necessary for forming very massive stars.Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journa

Fatal septic shock due to a disseminated chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis in an aged woman

    Get PDF
Once rare, septic shock (SS) due to disseminated fungal infections has been increasingly reported due to a growing number of immunocompromised patients, but remains rare in non-immune-compromised individuals. In paracoccidioidomycosis, it has been described in only three patients with the severe, acute form of the disease. We describe the development of a refractory, fatal septic shock due to a severe disseminated chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis in an older woman without any other microbial insults. A striking event in the evolution of her case was the severe depletion of lymphocytes from the peripheral blood and lymphoid organs. Lymphocyte depletion due to apoptosis is described in the late phase of sepsis and can contribute both to immunosuppression and the progression of SS. The possible mechanisms involved in the induction of SS in the chronic form of paracoccidioidomycosis are discussed

Noncommutative quantum mechanics and Bohm's ontological interpretation

We carry out an investigation into the possibility of developing a Bohmian interpretation based on the continuous motion of point particles for noncommutative quantum mechanics. The conditions for such an interpretation to be consistent are determined, and the implications of its adoption for noncommutativity are discussed. A Bohmian analysis of the noncommutative harmonic oscillator is carried out in detail. By studying the particle motion in the oscillator orbits, we show that small-scale physics can have influence at large scales, something similar to the IR-UV mixing
