    Do they practice what we teach? Follow-up evaluation of a Schema Therapy training programme

    This study evaluated a three-day Schema Therapy training programme for trainee clinical psychologists. The training used an experiential model of learning, which was intended to encourage the transfer of knowledge and techniques from the learning environment into clinical practice. Using a mixed-methods approach, the training programme was evaluated in terms of: (1) self-reported changes in knowledge, confidence and willingness to use Schema Therapy-informed techniques; (2) whether the training was integrated into clinical practice; and (3) the perceived barriers/facilitators to achieving practice integration. Participants – 17 of the 19 trainee clinical psychologists enrolled on the Schema Therapy training programme – completed assessments immediately pre- and post-training. Participants were subsequently followed-up for reassessment three months after the training. Group- and individual-level analyses showed that most participants reported training-related gains in knowledge and confidence; these were largely sustained at follow-up, and were associated with post-training practice integration of Schema Therapy concepts and techniques. Analysis of qualitative data identified factors moderating use of training in practice. Findings of the study have implications for future delivery and evaluation of training in cognitive-behavioural therapies

    Detection of Volcanic Plumes by GPS: the 23 November 2013 Episode on Mt. Etna

    The detection of volcanic plumes produced during explosive eruptions is important to improve our under- standing on dispersal processes and reduce risks to aviation operations. The ability of Global Position-ing System (GPS) to retrieve volcanic plumes is one of the new challenges of the last years in volcanic plume de - tection. In this work, we analyze the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) data from 21 permanent stations of the GPS network of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo, that are located on the Mt. Etna (Italy) flanks. Being one of the most explosive events since 2011, the eruption of November 23, 2013 was chosen as a test-case. Results show some variations in the SNR data that can be correlated with the presence of an ash-laden plume in the atmosphere. Benefits and limitations of the method are highlighted

    Synergy Parks: collaborative strategies to valorise side streams between companies

    This document is part of the deliverables for ARBOR, an Interreg IVB project for North-West Europe. ARBOR stands for Accelerating Renewable Energies through valorisation of Biogenic Organic Raw Material. Various of the projects consider multi-stakeholder collaborations, with or without a financial share of ARBOR in the project realisation. This project runs from 2011 till 2015. The framework for ARBOR are the EU 202020 targets in order to reduce climate change and the fact that biomass accounts for 50% of the renewables in Europe. Although a lot of expertise concerning biomass is available, it is noted that this information is not disseminated in a coordinated way, nor is it related to commercial exploitations. That is why the ARBOR-mission is to accelerate the sustainable development and use of biomass in North West Europe, to facilitate the achievement of the EU 202020 objectives. The increasing competition and environmental pressure and growing demand for food and resource efficiency requires cooperation and collaboration between agriculture and other business (Smeets, 2009) especially in the highly populated NWE. When companies systematically cooperate to achieve more sustainable biomass utilization through creating production synergies, we call this a synergy park. Ideally, synergy parks can be called a system innovation, that bring new technical, commercial, institutional, and social connections geared towards sustainable development. Ongoing collaboration and advice on stakeholder management should improve the synergy park composition, to the benefit of optimal biomass valorisation and energy efficiency. This report aims to describe outputs of ARBOR action 5 on Synergy parks, within individual ARBOR-regions. Following an initial meeting on the matter in Stoke-on-Trent, format with leading questions were circu-lated and filled out by the partners as far as possible for their single case

    Schema therapy for emotional dysregulation: Theoretical implication and clinical applications

    The term emotional dysregulation refers to an impaired ability to regulate unwanted emotional states. Scientific evidence supports the idea that emotional dysregulation underlies several psychological disorders as, for example: personality disorders, bipolar disorder type II, interpersonal trauma, anxiety disorders, mood disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder. Emotional dysregulation may derive from early interpersonal traumas in childhood. These early traumatic events create a persistent sensitization of the central nervous system in relation to early life stressing events. For this reason, some authors suggest a common endophenotypical origin across psychopathologies. In the last 20 years, cognitive behavioral therapy has increasingly adopted an interactiveontogenetic view to explain the development of disorders associated to emotional dysregulation. Unfortunately, standard Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) methods are not useful in treating emotional dysregulation. A CBT-derived new approach called Schema Therapy (ST), that integrates theory and techniques from psychodynamic and emotion focused therapy, holds the promise to fill this gap in cognitive literature. In this model, psychopathology is viewed as the interaction between the innate temperament of the child and the early experiences of deprivation or frustration of the subject\u2019s basic needs. This deprivation may lead to develop early maladaptive schemas (EMS), and maladaptive Modes. In the present paper we point out that EMSs and Modes are associated with either dysregulated emotions or with dysregulatory strategies that produce and maintain problematic emotional responses. Thanks to a special focus on the therapeutic relationship and emotion focused-experiential techniques, this approach successfully treats severe emotional dysregulation. In this paper, we make several comparisons between the main ideas of ST and the science of emotion regulation, and we present how to conceptualize pathological phenomena in terms of failed regulation and some of the ST strategies and techniques to foster successful regulation in patients

    Automatic Identification of Defects on Eggshell Through a Multispectral Vision System

    The objective of this research was to develop an off-line artificial vision system to automatically detect defective eggshells, i.e., dirty or cracked eggshells, by employing multispectral images with the final purpose to adapt the system to an on-line grading machine. In particular, this work was focused to study the feasibility of identifying organic stains on brown eggshells (dirty eggshell), caused by blood, feathers, feces, etc., from natural stains, caused by deposits of pigments on the outer layer of clean eggshells. During the analysis a total of 384 eggs were evaluated (clean: 148, dirty: 236). Dirty samples were evaluated visually in order to classify them according to the kind of defect (blood, feathers, and white, clear or dark feces), and clean eggshells were classified on the basis of the colour of the natural stains (clear or dark). For each sample digital images were acquired by employing a Charged Coupled Device (CCD) camera endowed with 15 monochromatic filters (440-940 nm). A MatlabÂź function was developed in order to automate the process and analyze images, with the aim to classify samples as clean or dirty. The program was constituted by three major steps: first, the research of an opportune combination of monochromatic images in order to isolate the eggshell from the background; second, the detection of the dirt stains; third, the classification of the images samples into the dirty or clean group on the basis of geometric characteristics of the stains (area in pixel). The proposed classification algorithm was able to correctly classify near 98% of the samples with a very low processing time (0.05s). The robustness of the proposed classification was observed applying an external validation to a second set of samples (n = 178), obtaining similar percentage of correctly classified samples (97%)
