    Real or imagined women? Staff representations of international women postgraduate students

    In Australia\u27s globalising universities many support staff and teaching staff now work with international women postgraduate students. But are they aware of the issues facing these women, and is their understanding of them adequate? Indeed, how do they represent them? In this paper we draw on a small-scale pilot study involving key university personnel. We argue that the ways in which such staff represent this group of students is problematic. Focusing primarily on academic issues and on the literature on learning styles, we analyse these staff members\u27 representations of international women postgraduate students from a postcolonial perspective. We explore the extent to which such representations, and the learning styles literature that reflects and informs them, are what Edward Said calls \u27Orientalist\u27. In so doing, we point to both the constitution of the international woman student as postcolonial female subject and show how this situates her in relation to the prevalent learning styles discourse. Further we argue that such representations of the students differ in crucial ways from the students\u27 self-representations, suggesting that in certain subtle ways such staff members are engaging with \u27imagined\u27 rather than \u27real\u27 women. <br /

    Development of a dichotomous indicator for population-level assessment of the dietary diversity of women of reproductive age

    Background: Dietary diversity is a key element of diet quality but diets of women of reproductive age (WRA; 15-49 y) in resource-poor settings are often deficient in a range of micronutrients. Previous work demonstrated relationships between simple food group diversity indicators (FGI) and micronutrient adequacy among WRA. For operational and advocacy purposes, however, there is strong demand for a dichotomous indicator reflecting an acceptable level of dietary diversity. Objective: To develop a dichotomous indicator of dietary diversity among WRA. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of 9 data sets containing quantitative dietary data from WRA in resource-poor settings (N total = 4,166). From the raw dietary data we calculated an individual "mean probability of adequacy" (MPA) across 11 micronutrients. Several candidate FGI were constructed. Indicator performance in predicting MPA > 0.60 was assessed within each data set using receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) analysis and sensitivity/specificity analysis at various FGI cut-offs. The analysis was performed separately for non-pregnant and non-lactating (NPNL) and for lactating women. Results: We identified 2 "best candidate" dichotomous indicators based on 9- or 10-point food group scores (FGI-9 and FGI-10) with a cut-off of 5 food groups or more. Both were significantly correlated to MPA in each site (P 5 of 10 defined food groups reflects "Minimum dietary diversity for women of reproductive age" (MDD-W). According to the conclusions of a consensus meeting of experts, this indicator is well suited for population-level assessment, advocacy, and maybe also for tracking of change in dietary diversity across time

    Background: As global rates of mortality decrease, rates of non-fatal injury have increased, particularly in low Socio-demographic Index (SDI) nations. We hypothesised this global pattern of non-fatal injury would be demonstrated in regard to bony hand and wrist trauma over the 27-year study period. Methods: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 was used to estimate prevalence, age-standardised incidence and years lived with disability for hand trauma in 195 countries from 1990 to 2017.     Expression of the chloride channel CLC-K in human airway epithelial cells

    Airway submucosal gland function is severely disrupted in cystic fibrosis (CF), as a result of genetic mutation of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), an apical membrane Cl– channel. To identify other Cl– channel types that could potentially substitute for lost CFTR function in these cells, we investigated the functional and molecular expression of Cl– channels in Calu-3 cells, a human cell line model of the submucosal gland serous cell. Whole cell patch clamp recording from these cells identified outwardly rectified, pH- and calcium-sensitive Cl– currents that resemble those previously ascribed to ClC-K type chloride channels. Using reverse transcription – polymerase chain reaction, we identified expression of mRNA for ClC-2, ClC-3, ClC-4, ClC-5, ClC-6, ClC-7, ClC-Ka, and ClC-Kb, as well as the common ClC-K channel b subunit barttin. Western blotting confirmed that Calu-3 cells express both ClC-K and barttin protein. Thus, Calu-3 cells express multiple members of the ClC family of Cl– channels that, if also expressed in native submucosal gland serous cells within the CF lung, could perhaps act to partially substitute lost CFTR function.
